Improvement of Energy Efficiency for Indoor Lighting in a Big Shopping Center

2018

As the progressive diffusion of shopping centers in Italy, the paper analysis the potential energy savings in the indoor lighting plant, thanks to new technologies as LED lamps and Building Automation System. The case study, applied to a big shopping mall in the middle of Italy, shows great results, thanks to the high efficiency of LED technology, high number of operating hours and the implementation of a control system. An economic and environmental evaluation is reported.

New Technologies for Adaptive Architecture

2019

Since the 1980s, the bioclimatic architecture has had the historical merit of having raised public and experts’ awareness on the importance of designing buildings with the purpose of solving the problem of energy saving. Nowadays, in the light of the most recent energy strategies policies, in force on an international and European scale, codified in EC Directive 31/2010 concerning the implementation of the Nearly Zer-Energy Buildings (NZEB), (Deru et al. 2006), the need for a new approach to redevelopment that focuses on environmental, climate and energy objectives with innovative technological solutions emerges, aimed at optimizing the passive bioclimatic behaviour of a building. In the wo…

Potential of Natural Ventilation and Vegetation for Achieving Low-Energy Tall Buildings in Tropical Climate: An Overview

2019

Climate change and rise in urban temperatures have further increased the cooling load demands for tall buildings located in hot climatic regions. Cooling loads in tall buildings can be reduced by integrating them with natural ventilation (NV) and building integrated vegetation (BIV) techniques. This study explores the potential of NV and BIV for obtaining low-energy buildings by analyzing ten tall buildings as case studies. Buildings are analyzed for NV, BIV, architecture design parameters, and energy savings. The results show that mixed-mode ventilation is the most commonly employed, and circular building plans have the highest potential for energy savings. Furthermore, the combination of …

Monitoring results and analysis of thermal comfort conditions in experimental buildings for different heating systems and ventilation regimes during …

2017

This paper focuses on the long-term monitoring of thermal comfort and discomfort parameters in five small test buildings equipped with different heating and cooling systems. Calculations of predicted percentage of dissatisfied people (PPD) index and discomfort factors are provided for the room in winter season running three different heating systems – electric heater, air-air heat pump and air-water heat pump, as well as for the summer cooling with split type air conditioning systems. It is shown that the type of heating/cooling system and its working regime has an important impact on thermal comfort conditions in observed room. Recommendations for the optimal operating regimes and choice o…

The role of modern architecture and interior design in the Latvian brending

2013

The national identity or the originality of expression of a nation`s culture is an important factor that is confining identification of a numerically and geographically small country in the age of globalization, with an inestimable role in the nation's self-maintenance. The respect for cultural heritage and valuable contemporary architecture and interior design have invaluable importance in forming national identity. The main issues of Architecture and design about the functional and aesthetic, form and materials, arrangement and integrity have always been and currently are important. Each successive step is the continuation of previous experience. Then the language of Architecture and inte…

A Generic Architectural Model Approach for Efficient Utilization of Patterns

2015

A software pattern describes the core of the solution to a problem that tends to (re-)occur in a particular environment. Such patterns are commonly used as a means to facilitate the creation of an architectural design satisfying the desired quality goals. In this chapter, the practical challenges of efficient usage of patterns in domain-specific software development are presented. The specific domain considered here is the mobile domain, for which is given a sample collection of potentially useful patterns. After that, a novel generic architectural model approach for organizing patterns is presented. In this approach, the identification of relevant patterns is considered as the process of r…

INNER AREAS

2022

Inner areas, as defned in the Italy’s National Strategy (SNAI), are part of the territory that plays a central role in the cultural and social fabric of our communities, are an essential component of our society, economy, and environment. However, they are still often neglected and overlooked, resulting in deterioration, abandonment, and social exclusion. For this reason, it is crucial that the felds of architecture, restoratio and architectural history and urban and territorial planning are committed to revitalizing and enhancing inner areas. These disciplines have the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to create sustainable and innovative solutions that can transform these territories …

Architectural technologies for life environment: improving sustainability by reusing wastes in novel geopolymeric mortars

2021

Recently, implementing construction to a more sustainable industry has become a focal point in the international debate due to the huge volume of non-renewvable raw materials and energy consumed every year, along with the significant emissions of green-house gases and global warming, often associated to the supplementing industries. Besides, valorisation and reuse of industrial wastes and by-products is a viable alternative to the traditional industrial system, becoming a compelling topic to improve processes and materials sustainability. This paper fo- cuses on the development of a novel class of green geopolymers, worldwide considered a solid and sustainable alternative to Portland cement…

Architectural Perspectives in the Cathedral of Palermo: Image-Based Modelling for Cultural Heritage Understanding and Enhancement

2015

Palermo off ers a repertoire of both artistic and architectural solid perspective of great beauty and in large quantity. This paper addresses the problem of the 3D survey of these works and their related study through the use of image-based modelling (IBM) techniques. We propose, as case studies, the use of IBM techniques inside the Cathedral of Palermo. Indeed, the church houses a huge and rich sculptural repertoire, dating back to 16th century, which constitutes a valid field of IBM techniques application. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the e ffectiveness and potentiality of these techniques for geometric analysis of sculptured works. Indeed, usually the survey of these artworks …

Antonino Sancho Arango, un arquitecto en el tránsito hacia la Valencia contemporánea

2016

The process of modernization that Valencia and its territory underwent during the central decades of the 19th century is intrinsically linked to the trajectory of Antonino Sancho Arango’s career. He is considered an important figure in Valencian urban planning of this century, but his works in the field of architecture are almost unknown. This article aims to complete the study of the Antonino Sancho’s work and to establish a biography that values his role in the changes experimented by Valencia, but also Sancho’s dedication to public projects. La modernización que experimentaron Valencia y su territorio durante las décadas centrales del siglo XIX es indisociable de la trayectoria profesion…
