Domain Specific Case Tool for ICT-Enabled Service Design

2014

One major problem in service design is the limited availability of information gathered during the development process. In particular, information on end-user requirements is difficult for designers, developers, and maintainers to access. Here, we provide a mechanism that supports the gathering and modeling of various types of information throughout the service and software development life cycle. As various existing tools focus on a particular part of the life cycle, essential information is not available, or it is more difficult to obtain in later stages. The linkage between information collected in the different stages is often lost. The implemented tool support enables the modeling of r…

Visualization in the integrated SimPhoNy multiscale simulation framework

2018

Abstract We describe three distinct approaches to visualization for multiscale materials modelling research. These have been developed with the framework of the SimPhoNy FP7 EU-project, and complement each other in their requirements and possibilities. All have been integrated via wrappers to one or more of the simulation approaches within the SimPhoNy project. In this manuscript we describe and contrast their features. Together they cover visualization needs from electronic to macroscopic scales and are suited to simulations made on personal computers, workstations or advanced High Performance parallel computers. Examples as well as recommendations for future calculations are presented.

SaaS architecture and pricing models

2014

In the new era of computing, SaaS software with different architectural characteristics might be priced in different ways. Even though both pricing and architectural characteristics are responsible for the success of the offering; the relationship between architectural and pricing characteristics has not been studied before. The present study fills this gap by employing a multi-case research. The findings accentuate that flexible and well-designed architecture enables different pricing models; however, poorly designed architecture limits also the pricing. Scalability and high level of modularity are the major enablers of a great variety of pricing models. Using public cloud services may lea…

Towards enabling privacy preserving smart city apps

2016

Smart city applications are increasingly relying on personally identifiable data. A disclosure of such a data to a platform provider and possible 3rd parties represents a risk to the privacy of the application users. To mitigate the privacy risk, two-layer privacy-preserving platform architecture is introduced, wherein the personally identifiable information is dealt with at the inner layer (executed in a trusted environment), whereas only generic and personally unidentifiable information is made available to the apps at the outer layer of the architecture — e.g., in a form of app-specific events. The essential requirements for the platform are described, and the architectural implications …

Essence : Reference Architecture for Software Engineering - Representing Essence in Archimate Notation

2018

Essence is a standard for working with methods in software engineering. As such, it can be seen as the reference architecture for software engineering. The Essence consists of the Kernel, and a notation called the Language. This representation is not widely known and likely hinders the adoption of the Essence. This paper represents the work-in-progress of representing the Essence using ArchiMate, the de facto notation for enterprise architecture. Our purpose is to help organisations to adopt Essence by representing it in the language already understood by different stakeholders. peerReviewed

Performance of an asymmetric and asynchronous decode-and-forward FBMC relay system

2014

End-to-end link performance of an asymmetric and asynchronous dual-hop decode-and-forward (DF) relay system built up using a causal multirate filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) technique operated under Rayleigh fading is presented. Three main performance measures namely bit error rate (BER), outage probability and channel capacity are used for this evaluation and approximate closed-form expressions for them are also made available. FBMC setup is modeled in exact form without any approximations while customizing to one of the most efficient subcarrier filter. Simulations are carried out in quasi-static multipath fading channels under symmetric, asymmetric, synchronous and asynchronous condition…

Emerging and Traditional Donors in the ‘Post-Busan’ Context: Assessing Brazil’s and Finland’s Cooperation Practices in Mozambique

2015

At the same time as the ‘emerging donors’ have gained relevance in the development cooperation system, they have also challenged established principles of aid. This article compares Brazil's and Finland's development cooperation practices in the light of recent global tendencies in the aid architecture. Based on empirical research carried out in Mozambique, Brazil, and Finland, the article gives a detailed review of the institutional and historical settings of each bilateral cooperation. The authors then analyse how two central concepts reinforced during the Busan High Level Forum have been put into practice by a ‘new emerging’ and a ‘traditional Nordic’ donor. For ‘development effectivenes…

Il sistema di copertura del Teatro Politeama di Palermo

2012

In the project of the Politeama’s Theater in Palermo, the Architect Almeyda summarizes, in an expressive and model balance, the technological component and geometrical/spatial shape, providing optimal solutions to a structural and functional problems. Thanks to its typological approach, thanks to its technological aspects and, specifically, thanks to its size and its style, the work offers us some interesting reflections about the technical choices carried out for the construction. The Author, basing on some original Almeyda’s drawings, deepens the geometric and compositional system of the roof. The daring and complex construction carried out in iron and glass, modern and progressive in for…

VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE IN INSULAR ITALY: HERITAGE TO PRESERVE AND VALUE

2021

The Mediterranean civilisation, in its millenary history, has also expressed itself through particular artefacts that have strongly characterised the territory. Knowledge of the artefacts that "qualify" a territory, both in historical and material terms, is a necessary prerequisite for tackling the planning and management problems relating to their protection and conservation. The architecture of the "vernacular" is linked to domestic life, customs, the "dialects" of places and the essence of the Genius Loci. The building heritage of the islands surrounding Sicily features special building techniques and systems that exploit natural resources to generate original artefacts and extremely fun…
