Abstract Background Visually Induced Motion Sickness (VIMS) or simulator sickness is often elicited by a visual stimulus that lacks the appropriate vestibular or proprioceptive feedback. In this study, we chose to investigate the effects of brightness and contrast of the visual scene on VIMS. Hypothesis We hypothesized that visual environments differing in brightness or contrast would differentially induce VIMS. The symptoms of VIMS should be most severe for the combination of high brightness and high contrast and conversely lowest for the low brightness and low contrast condition. An accurate estimation of the axial compression capacity of the concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) column is crucial for ensuring the safety of structures containing them and preventing related failures. In this article, two novel hybrid fuzzy systems (FS) were used to create a new framework for estimating the axial compression capacity of circular CCFST columns. In the hybrid models, differential evolution (DE) and firefly algorithm (FFA) techniques are employed in order to obtain the optimal membership functions of the base FS model. Investigating energy saving potential in a big shopping center through ventilation control

Abstract This paper investigates energy saving measures for the ventilation system of large shopping centers. This kind of buildings is characterized by high yearly energy consumptions, because of the high level of operating hours and the frequent use of obsolete technologies. In the analyzed case studies, three big Do It Yourself (DIY) shops, located in Italy, are considered.
