LA SECONDA VITA DELLO STERI: 1458-1535-The second life of the Steri: 1458-1535
2015
Design, construction and transformations: the history of a work of architecture has many lives. New generations, and different needs and uses change the initial assumptions and conditions. The Steri, the palace of the Chiaramonte family…
The Cathedral of Palermo : from survey to historic interpretation
2013
The Cathedral of Palermo was built by the Norman Kings, in the place where a mosque had been erected by the muslim governors of Sicily. The church has many features recalling the norman churches in northern France and in England, whilst some others are due to the contamination of norman, muslim and byzantine culture, that is peculiar of the so-called “arab-norman” architecture of medieval Sicily. In the XVIth century the Cathedral has been enriched by additions that did not affect its medieval features: a portico and a sacristy on the southern front, a sculptural decoration in the main apse. It was at the end of the XVIIIth century that the church underwent huge and extensive transformation…
Luminescence dating applied to Saint-Irénée’s church (Lyon, France)
2014
The aim of the study presented here is to propose a new view on the chronology of early medieval buildings in Europe and on the related building modes. If several studies have proved the efficiency of this multidisciplinary process, the case of St. Irenee’s church is very representative of the contributions of such an approach. This church is one of the oldest witnesses of the Christianization in Lyon, capital city of Gauls, and of its evolution under the aegis of Burgonds. However the small number of preserved remains of its early states has shown uncertainties in the interpretation of the chronology of the building use. There are two possibilities: is it the monument described by Gregory …
Chromatographic Efficiency in Micellar Liquid Chromatography: Should it Be Still a Topic of Concern?
2013
Micellar liquid chromatography (MLC) was first proposed as an attractive alternative to avoid the use of organic solvents. It was soon apparent that pure micellar solutions yield poor efficiencies. This problem was remediated by the addition of a small amount of an organic solvent. However, the general opinion of the poor peak shape has prevailed as a handicap for MLC, in spite of the fact that the hybrid mode often offers similar or even improved efficiencies (for basic compounds) relative to that attained in the hydro-organic mode. Only the efficiencies for apolar non-ionizable compounds are still clearly inferior. This work describes the type of interactions and polarity changes with org…
Fostering Collaborative Governance in Chronic Disease Management Programs: A Dynamic Performance Management Approach
2020
Chronic diseases are the leading cause of disability and mortality in the world and represent a global health emergency due to the increase in frequency and complexity that has been occurring in recent years. The outcomes related to chronic care needs depend on the joint effort of a multi-provider, multi-disciplinary, and multi-professional service network, which operates along a clinical pathway. However, all the different players involved in the provision of services may have different interests and goals derived from their organizational structure and their role in the overall health system. This context of fragmented governance makes performance management of care services problematic. …
HL7v3 CDA Rel.2 Patient Summary and Chronic Care Model: Localization experience and GP/HS Integration Project
2010
The localization experience for the Patient Summary, based on the Health Level Seven Version 3 (HL7v3) Clinical Document Architecture, Release 2 (CDA Rel.2), is presented. An overview of the Chronic Care Model (CCM) is introduced with particular attention to the clinical information systems, in order to organize patient and population clinical data by sharing information among healthcare providers in management of chronic diseases. We propose, as case study, a project for the integration of various services for General Practitioners (GP) and Hospital Specialists (HS), accessing the Electronic Health Record (EHR), implementing the Patient Summary and managing the exchange of Chronic Care med…
Coherence resonance in Bonhoeffer-Van der Pol circuit
2009
International audience; A nonlinear electronic circuit simulating the neuronal activity in a noisy environment is proposed. This electronic circuit is exactly ruled by the set of Bonhoeffer-Van Der Pol equations and is excited with a Gaussian noise. Without external deterministic stimuli, it is shown that the circuit exhibits the so-called 'coherence resonance' phenomenon.

Città e deserto. Appunti di un viaggio in Giordania. City and desert. Notes from a journey in Jordan
2012
The book is the result of some thoughts that I have gained during my stay in Jordan, where, for a few years, I have been teaching and researching, following an intense exchange activities developed productively thanks to the cooperation agreements between the University of Palermo, the University of Jordan in Amman and Al al-Bayt University of Mafraq.
