Identification of fish species by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode-array detection

A method for the separation of sarcoplasmic fish proteins by RP-HPLC is described. The procedure revealed significant differences useful for reliable identification of fish species. Sixteen of the most common Finnish freshwater fish species were differentiated by species-specific HPLC chromatograms obtained using photodiode-array detection (PAD) at 200-350 nm. The analytical column was a Hi-Pore RP-304 reversed-phase column. The separation was performed by a linear gradient of acetonitrile and water with a small amount of trifluoracetic acid (TFA). Holocene treeline in the northern Andes (Ecuador): new evidence from soil charcoals

Soil charcoals represent a record for palaeoecological studies. For the first time pedoanthracology is applied to northern Andes of Ecuador to study the Holocene treeline. The first results show that the upper treeline was lower than today in the late Pleistocene and in the Middle Holocene. A wide amount of charcoals dated ca. 13000 cal. yr. BP could be caused by fires linked to the first presence of man at these altitudes.

Granulomatous mastitis is a rare benign inflammatory disease of the breast with multiple etiologies such as tuberculosis, sarcoidosis, foreign body reaction, and mycotic and parasitic infections. In contrast, idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is characterized by the presence of chronic granulomatous lobulitis in the absence of an obvious etiology. Clinically and radiologically it may mimic breast carcinoma and so awareness of surgeons, pathologists, and radiologists is essential to avoid unnecessary mastectomies. Ewing's sarcoma (ES) of bone may occasionally display rosette-like textures mimicking Homer-Wright ones, as seen in neuroectodermic neoplasms (neuroblastoma, peripheral neuroepithelioma). Of a group of 39 cases of ES, reviewed with electron microscopic study, the authors have isolated five atypical ES, which histologically also possessed neuroectodermic traces. These tumors were composed of small round blue cells with rosette-like figures and cytoplasmic glycogen. Oxygenated Cembrene Diterpenes from Sarcophyton convolutum: Cytotoxic Sarcoconvolutum A–E

The soft coral genus Sarcophyton contains the enzymatic machinery to synthesize a multitude of cembrene-type diterpenes. Herein, highly oxygenated cembrenoids, sarcoconvolutum A–E (1–5) were purified and characterized from an ethyl acetate extract of the red sea soft coral, Sarcophyton convolutum. Compounds were assemblies according to spectroscopic methods including FTIR, 1D- and 2D-NMR as well as HRMS. Metabolite cytotoxicity was tested against lung adenocarcinoma, cervical cancer, and oral-cavity carcinoma (A549, HeLa and HSC-2, respectively). The most cytotoxic compound, (4) was observed to be active against cell lines A549 and HSC-2 with IC50 values of 49.70 and 53.17 μM, respectively.

During the analysis of wood charcoal remains from archaeological sites, it is common to find different microorganisms and different forms of degradation present in the plant tissue.
