Women in physics: A comparison to science, technology, engineering, and math education over four decades
2016
[This paper is part of the Focused Collection on Gender in Physics.] The dearth of women in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields has been lamented by scholars, administrators, policymakers, and the general public for decades, and the STEM gender gap is particularly pronounced in physics. While previous research has demonstrated that this gap is largely attributable to a lack of women pursuing physics in college, prior research reveals little in terms of the characteristics and career interests of women who do plan to major in physics or how these traits have evolved over time. To address these gaps, this study utilized nationwide data on first-time, full-time college stu…
Arturo Toscanini
2018
Thanks to the new media, i.e., record, radio and TV, Arturo Toscanini was the first conductor known by every kind of public in the world. The essay examines Toscanini’s art of conducting in five crucial issues. The foundation of a supranational repertoire of orchestral music enclosing ancient, modern and contemporaneous authors (from Corelli to Strawinsky). The reform of opera house and the paths of maestro in re-thinking the Italian opera after a deep study of Richard Wagner’s Musikdrama. The impressive use of memory in view of a close control of the orchestra (he conducted by heart over 600 scores). The personal, inelegant but effective gesture, by which Toscanini fascinated orchestras in…

Analysing the Impact of the Glass Ceiling in a Managerial Career: The Case of Spain
2021
The need to break down the barriers facing women in the labour market arouses great interest for reasons of social and sustainability justice. This study breaks new ground on the topic of the “glass ceiling” by assessing the evolution of gender inequality in the proportion of individuals reaching high managerial positions. The application of the csQCA method to a survey of two cohorts of Spanish graduates in management sharing the same starting conditions reveals two factors: job variety and additional education, as conditions that are usually present in a successful managerial career. Our findings confirm the prevalence of the gender gap with little progress in recent years. Women find it …

Predicting the timing of leaving home and related developmental tasks: Parents’ and children’s perspectives
2010
In this longitudinal study, we examined the changes in romantic activity, parental support, and the quality of parents’ marital relationships as predictors of the timing of leaving home in a sample of 93 children and their parents. During their adolescent years, on-time leavers received decreasing levels of parental support and were more romantically active, compared with late leavers or those later residing with their parents. The lower romantic activity of the two latter groups continued throughout emerging adulthood. No differences between the three groups emerged with respect to professional career. Parents’ marital quality had no impact on the timing of leaving home. The children’s and…
