Internal Rotation in Propionic Acid:  Near-Infrared-Induced Isomerization in Solid Argon

2005

The conformational system of propionic acid (CH3CH2COOH) is studied in solid argon. It is predicted by the ab initio calculations that this molecule has four stable conformers. These four structures are denoted Tt, Tg+/-, Ct, and Cg+/-, and they differ by the arrangement around the C-O and Calpha-C bonds. The ground-state Tt conformer is the only form present at 8 K after deposition of an argon matrix containing propionic acid. For the CH3CH2COOH and CH3CH2COOD isotopologues, narrow-band excitation of the first hydroxyl stretching overtone of the conformational ground state promotes the Calpha-C and C-O internal rotations producing the Tg+/- and Ct conformers, respectively. A subsequent vib…

Calculated helium-broadened line parameters in the nu4 band of 13CH4

1998

International audience; Helium line-broadening coefficients for transitions in the nu4 band of 13CH4 have been calculated using a semi-classical model. This model is analogous to the one that we have used in a previous study on argon line-broadening coefficients for transitions in the nu3 band of 12CH4. For the present study, over 270 room temperature measurements were considered. The J, symmetry and fine structure dependences of the data are satisfactorily reproduced, although deficiencies of the semi-classical model are evidenced.

Transition probabilities for BrII lines emitted from a wall-stabilized cascade arc

2000

Abstract Absolute transition probabilities of the eleven Br II lines were measured in emission. A plasma created in a wall-stabilized arc at atmospheric pressure in the mixture of argon and bromine vapors was used as the excitation source. The relative transition probabilities were converted to an absolute scale based on a lifetime value measured by the electron impact method. The results were compared with experimental data. Discrepancies have been found to be outside the experimental uncertainties.

Stark effect in some lines of neutral bromine

2002

Abstract This work presents experimental results of profile parameters for prominent lines of neutral bromine, for which serious discrepancies between experimental values of different authors as well as between experimental and calculated values were observed. The observed discrepancies between shock tube and earlier arc experiments are very large. Our results of profile parameters, obtained also in a wall-stabilized arc, show acceptable agreement with the earlier arc measurements. It is obvious, that the shock tube experimental result is out of the range of acceptable inaccuracy and should be remeasured. The theoretical calculations based on different assumptions give also strongly diverge…

Investigation of Hg resonance 184.9nm line profile in a low-pressure mercury–argon discharge

2007

Abstract The line profiles of 184.9 nm Hg resonance line emitted from a Hg low-pressure high-frequency electrodeless discharge lamp, containing Hg 198 isotope, have been measured by means of a Zeeman scanning spectrometer at the mercury cold spot temperature values in the range of 0–23 °C. Two different methods were used to determine the real spectral line profile and to separate the instrument function: (i) solving the ill-posed inverse problem by means of the Tikhonov's regularization method; and (ii) the mathematical modelling by means of a non-linear multi-parameter chi-square fit. The real Hg 184.9 nm spectral line profiles, determined by both methods, are compared. Influence of instru…

Diagnostics of capillary mercury–argon high-frequency electrodeless discharge using line shapes

2005

Abstract The profiles of the 253.7 nm spectral line, emitted from the capillary argon–mercury isotope high-frequency electrodeless discharge, are measured by means of a pressure-scanned Fabry–Perot spectrometer. Spectral line profiles are collected from two lamps at the argon pressure of 2 and 10 Torr, in dependence on the discharge current and Hg vapor densities corresponding to the cold spot temperatures of 25–80 °C. By means of a multi-parameter non-linear line profile fitting procedure of multiple overlapping self-reversed Voigt profiles, the temperature of the radiating atoms and the optical density were estimated. The capillary and spherical discharge conditions were compared. The opt…

Laser driven parametric amplification in the xuv and soft-x-ray spectral range

2011

We present the first experimental realization of a new x-ray laser scheme based on strong-field parametric amplification of high-order harmonic radiation. With a simple semi-classical model, we can identify the most important experimental parameters, the spectral range and the small signal gain in gases. Using a single amplifier stage a small signal gain of 8000 has been obtained in Argon for the spectral range of 40-50 eV, using 350 fs, 7 mJ pulses at 1.05 µm. In Helium, we observed a small signal gain of 280 around 300 eV using 6 fs, 1.5 mJ pulses at 800 nm.

(Table 1) Sea surface temperature reconstruction for eastern equatorial Pacific surface sediment samples

2012

Significant uncertainties persist in the reconstruction of past sea surface temperatures in the eastern equatorial Pacific, especially regarding the amplitude of the glacial cooling and the details of the post-glacial warming. Here we present the first regional calibration of alkenone unsaturation in surface sediments versus mean annual sea surface temperatures (maSST). Based on 81 new and 48 previously published data points, it is shown that open ocean samples conform to established global regressions of Uk'37 versus maSST and that there is no systematic bias from seasonality in the production or export of alkenones, or from surface ocean nutrient concentrations or salinity. The flattening…

La Retorica di Aristotele. Introduzione alla lettura.

2008
