Explanatory Reasoning: A Probabilistic Interpretation

2016

This paper deals with inference guided by explanatory considerations –specifically with the prospects for a probabilistic interpretation of it. After pointing out some differences between two sorts of explanatory reasoning – i.e.: abduction and “inference to the best explanation” – in the first section I distinguish two tasks: (a) to discern which explanation is the best one; (b) to assess whether the best explanation deserves to be legitimately believed. In Sect. 20.2 I discuss some recent definitions of explanatory power based on “reduction of uncertainty” (Schupbach and Sprenger 2011; Crupi and Tentori 2012). Even though a probabilistic framework is a promising option here, I will argue …

The hidden side of adverbs

2018

This paper will address the predicative nature of manner adverb(ial)s and of three types of sentence adverbs (subject-oriented, modal, and evaluative) in Italian. Predication often becomes overt by means of morphological correlates. Is it possible to find any such evidence with invariable adverbs? To unveil their predicative nature, a procedure will be suggested in which two sentences, one with a -mente adverb, the other with its cognate adjective (a) share the content morphemes (identity of the signifiant) and (b) entail each other (identity of the signifié as regards semantic roles). A number of such pairs will be discussed, examples of which include: Intelligentemente, Leo intervenne ‘Cl…

Content-Specific Learning in CLIL

2018

The research investigates the effects of two learning contexts, content and language integrated learning (CLIL) and traditional learning (non-CLIL), upon content-specific outcomes, an aspect less explored than language-specific achievements in CLIL. Specifically, the study provides an interdisciplinary analysis of English CLIL applied to Physics in Italian high school. Two different levels of student competence are examined: selecting answers for content-specific issues, and content-related argumentative skills, in order to measure how learners comprehend and discuss content. The comparison between CLIL and non-CLIL classes in pretest, posttest and delayed posttest acco…

Verbi locativi in italiano come varianti di verbi supporto

2021

Neil MacCormick's Second Thoughts on Legal Reasoning and Legal Theory. A Defence of the Original View

2011

This paper offers a diachronic reconstruction of MacCormick's theory of law and legal argumentation: In particular, two related points will be highlighted in which the difference between the perspective upheld in Legal Reasoning and Legal Theory and the later writings is particularly marked. The first point concerns MacCormick's gradual break with legal positivism, and more specifically the thesis that the implicit pretension to justice of law proves legal positivism false in all its different versions. The second point concerns MacCormick's acceptance of the one-right-answer thesis and the consequent thinning of the differences between MacCormick's theory of legal reasoning and that of Ron…

Uso y funciones de los «hashtags» evidenciales en Twitter

2021

This paper examines evidential hashtags on Twitter. The analyzed hashtags contain constructions of the verb decir (‘to say’) that are preceded by the hash symbol (e.g., #dicen, #sedice, #esodicen, #dicenporahí), which have not been analyzed from the perspective of evidentiality. An exploratory and qualitative study was performed using a sample of 94 tweets that were published over six months. The analysis addresses structural and semantic-pragmatic parameters. According to the results of the analysis, evidential hashtags can transmit reportative, quotative and folklore evidentiality. Furthermore, the evidential meaning of the hashtags is accompanied by pragmatic functions such as attenuatio…

'Tell Us Only What You Know': Evidentiality in the Discourse of Participants in Spanish Trials

2019

Pragmatic evidence, context, and story design: an essay on recent developments in experimental pragmatics

2012

What is pragmatic evidence? In this contribution, I argue that pragmatic evidence basically is connected with pragmatic intuitions related to a context. The context usually is either given as a story, or is left to the imagination of a judge (a linguist, a reader, a test participant). It is shown that stories not only play an important role in pragmatic argumentation and analysis, but also with regard to story design in experimental settings.
