Self, Agent, Soul: Abū al-Barakāt al-Baghdādī’s Critical Reception of Avicennian Psychology
2016
This paper investigates Abū al-Barakāt al-Baghdādī’s critical reception and development of an Avicennian argument that hinges on the intuitive evidence provided by our awareness of ourselves. According to the argument, each of us is indubitably aware of enduring as a single subject and agent behind the constantly varying stream of experience and action. On the basis of this intuitive certainty Avicenna concludes that the human soul is similarly one. By introducing problematic acts related to the Peripatetic concept of soul, such as digestion and growth, Abū al-Barakāt suggests that if we want to save the argumentative power of the relevant phenomena, we must revise the Avicennian concept of…
Argument graph as a tool for promoting collaborative online reading
2012
This study explored how the construction of an argument graph promotes students' collaborative online reading compared to note-taking. Upper secondary school students (n = 76) worked in pairs. The pairs were asked to search for and read source material on the Web for a joint essay and either construct an argument graph or take notes during online reading. The data consist of transcription protocols of student pairs' discussions and joint essays. The study indicated that argument graphs may be useful tools when teachers want students to pay attention to the argumentative content of online sources and to consider relations between arguments. Additionally, with argument graphs, teachers can su…
La crisi del dibattito pubblico nell'Italia contemporanea: il discorso populista
2019
In this paper I discuss the current state of the so called populist political discourse in Italy. In particular my purpose is to shed light on some features of this kind of discourse in order to show the relation between language and policy in the discourse of populism. In this perspective I will follow the eight key points that, according to Diamanti & Lazar (2018), identify the actual populist movements, in order to verify if – and, in that case, which – linguistic traits characterize their discourse. The analysis will be focused on the semantic and argumentative aspects of the discourse of some of the most important political actors in contemporary Italy.
Challenges concerning argumentative writing in a second language context
2018
The current study is based on parts of the data collected in a quasi-experiment conducted in four English classes of Norwegian upper secondary school students. The purpose of the quasi-experiment was to explore whether a teaching intervention based on systemic functional linguistics and genre-pedagogy would support students in improving their competence in writing argumentative texts in English. The improvement was measured by comparing evaluations of pre-and post-tests. The current study investigates what seemed to be the main challenges for Norwegian students concerning this type of genre in a second language context based on the pre-tests and the evaluations of the pre-tests. The most ch…

En lo que cabe and the limits of assertion
2019
The present work analyzes the expression en lo que cabe, construction in process of fixation as discursive operator that shows certain complexity in its construction …
Written arguments and collaborative speech acts in practising the argumentative power of language through chat debates
2007
Abstract This study deals with the quality of argumentation and collaboration in students’ chat debates. The argumentative interaction between students is analysed by categorising their speech turns into seven functional categories. The argumentative task-related parts of the students’ discussions are further analysed into collaborative and non-collaborative speech acts. Argumentation patterns are revealed when the results of both analyses are combined with observations on the students’ writing styles. Students ( n = 24) participated in 12 dyadic debates concerning either nuclear power (NP) or genetically modified organisms (GMO). We found that the majority (67.2%) of the speech turns in N…
Epistemic Modality Markers in European and American Law Journals
2013
Over the last decades the attention of scholars working in the filed of social sciences has been directed towards language variation, and discourse analysis has increasingly evolved as a valuable way of understanding the use of language in a variety of academic, institutional and professional settings (Clyne 1994; Flowerdew & Gotti 2006; Bhatia et al. 2008). According to the sociolinguist approach, genres become ‘dynamically rhetorical structures’ that can be manoeuvred according to the discipline’s norms, values and ideology, both historically and incrementally changing as disciplinary knowledge and genres required and created by discourse communities’ change (Bhatia 2004; Hyland 2004,…

Problem Solving and Argumentative Skills in Multicultural Italian Classrooms.
2016
In the last decades the population in Italian classrooms has become increasing more multicultural. Even if the law guarantees to all students the access to school, the gap between Italian students and migrant ones is becoming more and more evident in the results of national surveys in Italian Language and Mathematics and in the high dropout rates. A preliminary investigation was carried out to highlight the main difficulties faced in mathematics by these students, particularly related to problem solving and argumentation. The research aimed therefore to the development and testing of an educational intervention that, taking into account cultural and linguistic differences, aims at strengthe…
