Vibrio vulnificus biotype 3 has been implicated as the causative pathogen of an ongoing disease outbreak that erupted in Israel in 1996. Recent work based on multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) showed that V. vulnificus biotype 3 is genetically homogeneous. The aim of this study was to investigate the existence of subpopulations within this homogeneous biotype by characterizing the surface antigens and analysing the sequence diversity of selected outer-membrane protein (OMP)-encoding genes. Glycosaminoglycans are accumulated in both mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) and mucolipidoses (ML). MPS I, II, III and VII and ML II and ML III patients cannot properly degrade heparan sulphate (HS). In spite of the importance of HS storage in the metabolic pathway in these diseases, blood and urine HS levels have not been determined systematically using a simple and economical method. Using a new ELISA method using anti-HS antibodies, HS concentrations in blood and urine were determined in MPS and ML II and ML III patients. Circulating lymphocytes of four patients with mucopolysaccharidoses II and IIIA, four patients with juvenile neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis, one patient each with glycogenosis type II, infantile neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis, and Gaucher disease were classified by immunoelectron microscopy as B or T lymphocytes. Disease-specific lysosomal inclusions as well as non-specific lysosomal organelles, especially Gall bodies were identified in B and T lymphocytes. These non-quantitative studies indicate that both B and T lymphocytes participate in the lysosomal storage process.

Abstract Objective The aim of our study is to reflect hearing impairment of 23 children diagnosed with mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) type I, II, III and IV. Methods Retrospective study of the clinical, audiological and treatment (medical vs surgical) findings of 23 children diagnosed with MPS type I, II, III and IV followed at a Tertiary Referral Hospital between 1997 and 2015. Results Six cases of MPS I, 8 of MPS II, 4 of MPS III and 5 of MPS IV were reviewed. 71.2% of patients had secretory otitis media (SOM) and 54% of patients had some type of hearing loss (HL). The management of mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) is focused on the multi-organ, sometimes life-threatening, clinical manifestations that occur over time. In the past, the limited, symptom-based treatment options led physicians to adopt a palliative approach towards individual disease-associated complications. The availability of systemic treatments such as haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) has created a better prognosis for MPS patients, particularly when initiated early in life. Structure−Dynamics Coupling between Protein and External Matrix in Sucrose-Coated and in Trehalose-Coated MbCO: An FTIR Study

We performed FTIR measurements on carboxy-myoglobin (MbCO) embedded in a sucrose−water matrix to study the degrees of freedom coupling between protein and external matrix in such a system. The work was undertaken on the light of recent results by Giuffrida et al. (J. Phys. Chem. B 2003, 107, 13211−13217), who evidenced, in trehalose-coated MbCO, a structured water−sugar environment of the protein, tightly coupled to the heme pocket structure. Such information was obtained through a suitable analysis of the temperature dependence of the CO stretching and of the water association bands in samples of different content of residual water.
