$L_2$-variation of L\'{e}vy driven BSDEs with non-smooth terminal conditions
2016
We consider the $L_2$-regularity of solutions to backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs) with Lipschitz generators driven by a Brownian motion and a Poisson random measure associated with a L\'{e}vy process $(X_t)_{t\in[0,T]}$. The terminal condition may be a Borel function of finitely many increments of the L\'{e}vy process which is not necessarily Lipschitz but only satisfies a fractional smoothness condition. The results are obtained by investigating how the special structure appearing in the chaos expansion of the terminal condition is inherited by the solution to the BSDE.
A network agent-based model of ethnocentrism and intergroup cooperation
2019
We present a network agent-based model of ethnocentrism and intergroup cooperation in which agents from two groups (majority and minority) change their communality (feeling of group solidarity), cooperation strategy and social ties, depending on a barrier of “likeness” (affinity). Our purpose was to study the model’s capability for describing how the mechanisms of preexisting markers (or “tags”) that can work as cues for inducing in-group bias, imitation, and reaction to non-cooperating agents, lead to ethnocentrism or intergroup cooperation and influence the formation of the network of mixed ties between agents of different groups. We explored the model’s behavior via four experiments in w…
Block Based Deconvolution Algorithm Using Spline Wavelet Packets
2010
This paper presents robust algorithms to deconvolve discrete noised signals and images. The idea behind the algorithms is to solve the convolution equation separately in different frequency bands. This is achieved by using spline wavelet packets. The solutions are derived as linear combinations of the wavelet packets that minimize some parameterized quadratic functionals. Parameters choice, which is performed automatically, determines the trade-off between the solution regularity and the initial data approximation. This technique, which id called Spline Harmonic Analysis, provides a unified computational scheme for the design of orthonormal spline wavelet packets, fast implementation of the…
A model-based approach to Spotify data analysis: a Beta GLMM
2020
Digital music distribution is increasingly powered by automated mechanisms that continuously capture, sort and analyze large amounts of Web-based data. This paper deals with the management of songs audio features from a statistical point of view. In particular, it explores the data catching mechanisms enabled by Spotify Web API and suggests statistical tools for the analysis of these data. Special attention is devoted to songs popularity and a Beta model, including random effects, is proposed in order to give the first answer to questions like: which are the determinants of popularity? The identification of a model able to describe this relationship, the determination within the set of char…
Response functions in multicomponent Luttinger liquids
2012
We derive an analytic expression for the zero temperature Fourier transform of the density-density correlation function of a multicomponent Luttinger liquid with different velocities. By employing Schwinger identity and a generalized Feynman identity exact integral expressions are derived, and approximate analytical forms are given for frequencies close to each component singularity. We find power-like singularities and compute the corresponding exponents. Numerical results are shown for the case of three components.
Parametric estimation of non-crossing quantile functions
2021
Quantile regression (QR) has gained popularity during the last decades, and is now considered a standard method by applied statisticians and practitioners in various fields. In this work, we applied QR to investigate climate change by analysing historical temperatures in the Arctic Circle. This approach proved very flexible and allowed to investigate the tails of the distribution, that correspond to extreme events. The presence of quantile crossing, however, prevented using the fitted model for prediction and extrapolation. In search of a possible solution, we first considered a different version of QR, in which the QR coefficients were described by parametric functions. This alleviated th…
The rank of random regular digraphs of constant degree
2018
Abstract Let d be a (large) integer. Given n ≥ 2 d , let A n be the adjacency matrix of a random directed d -regular graph on n vertices, with the uniform distribution. We show that the rank of A n is at least n − 1 with probability going to one as n grows to infinity. The proof combines the well known method of simple switchings and a recent result of the authors on delocalization of eigenvectors of A n .
Dynamic-Interactive Graphics for Statistics (26 years later)
2014
This paper briefly reviews the history of dynamic-interactive graphicsfor statistics, introduces an example of such graphics, and provides a fewglimpses as to the current state of things and the future trends we envision. The general conclusion is that dynamic-interactive graphics for statistics arethriving more than ever as they shift from the desktop to the internet. Thus,dynamic-interactive graphics are becoming increasingly important as they: 1) provide non-experts in statistics with the means to carry out analyses on their own; and 2) teach the basic concepts of statistics to students and practitioners with low to moderate mathematics skills. Their increasingpopularity makes the lesson…
The smallest singular value of a shifted $d$-regular random square matrix
2017
We derive a lower bound on the smallest singular value of a random d-regular matrix, that is, the adjacency matrix of a random d-regular directed graph. Specifically, let $$C_1<d< c n/\log ^2 n$$ and let $$\mathcal {M}_{n,d}$$ be the set of all $$n\times n$$ square matrices with 0 / 1 entries, such that each row and each column of every matrix in $$\mathcal {M}_{n,d}$$ has exactly d ones. Let M be a random matrix uniformly distributed on $$\mathcal {M}_{n,d}$$ . Then the smallest singular value $$s_{n} (M)$$ of M is greater than $$n^{-6}$$ with probability at least $$1-C_2\log ^2 d/\sqrt{d}$$ , where c, $$C_1$$ , and $$C_2$$ are absolute positive constants independent of any other parameter…
Uniform measure density condition and game regularity for tug-of-war games
2018
We show that a uniform measure density condition implies game regularity for all 2 < p < ∞ in a stochastic game called “tug-of-war with noise”. The proof utilizes suitable choices of strategies combined with estimates for the associated stopping times and density estimates for the sum of independent and identically distributed random vectors. peerReviewed
