Multidisciplinary peer-mentoring groups facilitating change?

2020

This article discusses the potential of multidisciplinary peer-mentoring groups to facilitate individual and institutional change. To do this, we view peer mentoring as a form of critical education praxis (Mahon et al. 2019), the purpose of which is to create a space for reflexive thinking and asking critical questions. The data were collected by interviewing all thirteen participants – doctoral students and more established scholars – of a multidisciplinary peer-mentoring pilot project. The results show a variety of both individual changes and desired changes within the university, which were brought into view as a result of the sharing of experiences, views and ideas in an open, confident…

La diretta applicabilità dei trattati nell’ordinamento italiano: quo vadis?

2022

The concept of ‘direct applicability’ and ‘self-executing’ nature of international norms is still object of intense debate in the international legal scholarship. In Italy, such a debate has attracted new attention in the light of a recent ruling of the Joint Sections of the Court of Cassation, according to which the norms enshrined in the European Convention of Human Rights are not directly applicable in domestic proceedings. Such a statement seems to derive from some terminological and legal mis-understanding. By summarizing the conclusions of the several authors which have dealt with this issue in a Special Section of the review, the present article formulates some conclusions. First, it…

Attiecības ar lietām: Latvijas labdarības veikalu gadījuma analīze

2022

Phenotypic tradeoffs between egg number and egg size in three parasitic anisakid nematodes

2007

Phenotypic tradeoffs between number and size of eggs were tested in three component populations of three marine anisakid nematodes: Anisakis simplex, Pseudoterranova decipiens and Contracaecum osculatum. Body and uterine volumes (as proxies of female size), and egg number, mean egg volume and clutch volume (as descriptors of reproductive output) were measured in 50 females of each species. Evidence of a phenotypic tradeoff was detected only in A. simplex; the first time that has been found in a parasite population. Comparison of feasible values inferred from the van Noordwijk and de Jong's model and current data showed that interindividual variation in egg size was narrower than expected in…

On the qualitative analysis of the solutions of a mathematical model of social dynamics

2006

Abstract This work deals with a family of dynamical systems which were introduced in [M.L. Bertotti, M. Delitala, From discrete kinetic and stochastic game theory to modelling complex systems in applied sciences, Math. Models Methods Appl. Sci. 7 (2004) 1061–1084], modelling the evolution of a population of interacting individuals, distinguished by their social state. The existence of certain uniform distribution equilibria is proved and the asymptotic trend is investigated.

Fitness in Finland: Department Stores of Healthy Life Styles

2020

The main purposes of this article are to find out: how and why the popularity of fitness has evolved over the years in Finland and what kind of business activities in fitness nowadays exist. Fitness industry has grown strongly in the recent years in Finland, both in terms of the amount of companies and member rates. The growth can be explained by a variety of reasons. The increasing importance of global trends that emphasize health, well-being, physical capacity and good-looking appearance; the equality between genders in sports participation; the ageing of the population with senior citizens as gym users and the rise of the low-cost fitness segment is among the reasons that explain the pop…

A Research Project about Communism in Romanian Countryside: Ploughmen’s Front Propaganda (1944-1953)

2013

The Ploughmen Front represented the strongest and the oldest “comrade” of the Communist Party from Romania, with a major role in the countryside communization. In general, the studies dedicated to Romania communization focused on institutionalization of the regime, liquidation of democratic order, repression, anticommunist resistance and less on the transformations undergone by the Romanian countryside. The only important issue was the agriculture collectivization. Our project takes into consideration a new approach, which is the research of the way communism became popular in the rural areas, which meant 80% of the Romanian population, how the popularity of the historical parties was dislo…

Origination and extinction patterns of mammals in three central Western Mediterranean islands from the Late Miocene to Quaternary

2008

Abstract An overview of the population histories of three insular realms (Gargano palaeo-archipelago, Sardinia–Maritime Tuscany palaeo-bioprovince and the Sicilian insular complex) during the Late Miocene and Quaternary are here presented. The complexity of biodiversity changes in the islands is analysed to propose an interpretation of origination and extinction patterns. The study highlighted several important aspects of insular faunas. Evolutionary radiations were found to contribute significantly only to the Gargano faunal diversity, likely because the area was an archipelago at the time. Another interesting result is that large and small mammals do not disperse and become extinct all at…

Active macro-zone approach for incremental elastoplastic-contact analysis

2013

The symmetric boundary element method, based on the Galerkin hypotheses, has found an application in the nonlinear analysis of plasticity and in contact-detachment problems, but both dealt with separately. In this paper, we want to treat these complex phenomena together as a linear complementarity problem. A mixed variable multidomain approach is utilized in which the substructures are distinguished into macroelements, where elastic behavior is assumed, and bem-elements, where it is possible that plastic strains may occur. Elasticity equations are written for all the substructures, and regularity conditions in weighted (weak) form on the boundary sides and in the nodes (strong) between cont…

β and γ bands in N = 88, 90, and 92 isotones investigated with a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian based on covariant density functional theory…

2019

A comprehensive systematic study is made for the collective β and γ bands in even-even isotopes with neutron numbers N=88 to 92 and proton numbers Z=62(Sm) to 70 (Yb). Data, including excitation energies, B(E0) and B(E2) values, and branching ratios from previously published experiments are collated with new data presented for the first time in this study. The experimental data are compared to calculations using a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian (5DCH) based on the covariant density functional theory (CDFT). A realistic potential in the quadrupole shape parameters V(β,γ) is determined from potential energy surfaces (PES) calculated using the CDFT. The parameters of the 5DCH are fixe…
