Modelling of rotations by using matrix solutions of nonlinear wave equations
2007
A family of matrix solutions of nonlinear wave equations is extended and its application to modelling is given. It is shown that a similarity transformation, induced by the matrix solution, is equivalent to the rotation. Matrix solutions are used for modelling helical motions and vortex rings, simultaneous rotations and particles collision, mapping contraction and pulsating spheres. Geometrical interpretation of the doubling of rotation angle in each step of sequential mapping contraction is given. First Published Online: 14 Oct 2010
Self-Complementary Dimers of Oxalamide-Functionalized Resorcinarene Tetrabenzoxazines
2018
Self‐complementarity is a useful concept in supramolecular chemistry, molecular biology and polymeric systems. Two resorcinarene tetrabenzoxazines decorated with four oxalamide groups were synthesized and characterized. The oxalamide groups possessed self‐complementary hydrogen bonding sites between the carbonyls and amide groups. The self‐complementary nature of the oxalamide groups resulted in self‐included dimeric assemblies. The hydrogen bonding interactions within the tetrabenzoxazines gave rise to the formation of dimers, which were confirmed by single‐crystal X‐ray diffractions analysis and supported by NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The self‐included dimers were connected b…
Learning research in a laboratory classroom : a reflection on complementarity and commensurability among multiple analytical accounts
2022
With the myriad theories generated through research over the years, a continuing challenge for researchers is to navigate the multitude of theories in order to communicate their research, integrate empirical results, and make progress as a field by building upon empirical research. The Social Unit of Learning project was purposefully designed so that researchers from multiple disciplines with different theoretical perspectives could work together to examine the complexity of the mathematics classroom. In this paper, we reflect on the multiple analytical accounts generated from the project, drawing from the notions of complementarity and commensurability. Two parallel analyses, applying the …
Processing of a spoken narrative in the human brain is shaped by family cultural background
2020
ABSTRACTUsing neuroimaging, we studied influence of family cultural background on processing of an audiobook in human brain. The audiobook depicted life of two young Finnish men, one with the Finnish and the other with the Russian family background. Shared family cultural background enhanced similarity of narrative processing in the brain at prelexical, word, sentence, and narrative levels. Similarity was also enhanced in brain areas supporting imagery. The cultural background was further reflected as semantic differences in word lists by which the subjects described what had been on their minds when they heard the audiobook during neuroimaging. Strength of social identity shaped word, sent…
2018
The article describes the increasingly popular phenomenon of placentophagy. It is becoming more and more common in the First World countries of the West, where a woman can take her placenta home after delivering a baby. It is forbidden under the Polish law. The first part of the text focuses on the origins of placentophagy, the reasons for its popularity and for showcasing motives for which people eat parts of their own bodies. The text explores opinions confirming the positive impact of placenta consumption and the medical evidence refuting the majority of these theses. The second part of the article is in turn focused on practices of treating placenta in traditional culture and the reason…
Psychology of Gender
2013
Throughout the history of philosophy authors have used claims about women’s deficient psychological capacities in order to justify their inferior position in society. Likewise, male and female defenders of women have most often based their arguments on claims about psychological equality, if not similarity, between the sexes. This chapter traces the major developments and shifts in philosophical discussions about gendered aspects of the soul from Antiquity until the Enlightenment.
Urban Space and Gender Performativity in Knut Hamsun’s Hunger and Cora Sandel’s Alberta and Freedom
2018
In this article, I discuss the combination of city life and gender performativity in two Norwegian classics, Knut Hamsun’s Hunger (2016) [Sult, 1890] and Cora Sandel’s Alberta and Freedom (1984) [Alberte og friheten, 1931]. These are modernist novels depicting lonely human subjects in an urban space, the first one featuring a man in Kristiania (now Oslo) in the 1880s, the second one a woman and her female acquaintances in Paris in the 1920s. I interpret and compare the two novels by focusing on their intertwined construction of gender performativity and urban space. Gender norms of the city life are critical premises for how the subjects manage to negotiate with different options and obstac…
Culture and odor categorization : agreement between cultures depends upon the odors
2003
This study evaluated the effect of culture on the relationship between psychological dimensions underlying odor perception and odor categorization. In a first experiment, French, Vietnamese and American participants rated several perceptual dimensions of everyday odorants, and sorted these odorants on the basis of their similarity. Results showed that the three groups of participants differed in their perceptual judgments but agreed in categorizing the odors into four consensual groups (floral, sweet, bad, and nature). Three dimensions––pleasantness, edibility, cosmetic acceptability––discriminated these groups in the same way in the three countries. In a second experiment, the participants…
