Six-years-long effects of the Italian policies for photovoltaics on the grid parity of grid-connected photovoltaic systems installed in urban contexts
2017
Abstract The purpose of this study is investigating the grid parity (GP) time and the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) of grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems installed in densely urbanized contexts. The analysis, which was elaborated for three Italian cities, considered the effects of the promoting policies enacted by the Italian government from June 2010 to May 2016. An appropriate methodology was applied with the aim of realistically defining the energy produced by PV systems installed on buildings with different roof types and number of floors. The calculus of the disbursements considered the operating, maintenance and insurance costs and the wear of PV panels and inverters. The resu…
Morally Successful Collaboration between Academia and Industry — A Case of a Project Course
2006
Academia-industry collaboration is common in the IT-field, and it includes training programs, research centre activities, and industry advisory boards (Watson and Huber 2000). For the industry, co-operation provides possibilities to acquire human resources and, for the academia, co-operation ensures that research and teaching activities are relevant. Regardless of its popularity little is known about moral issues relating to this phenomenon. This study intends to fill the gap in knowledge by determining the nature of moral conflicts perceived by clients, students, and instructors of a collaborative project course, and by formulating a framework to successfully getting grips with these confl…
Use of Automated Photoelasticity to Determine Stress Intensity Factors of Bimaterial Joints
2005
A new systematic experimental procedure has been developed to obtain the stress intensity factors governing the singular stress field that occurs near the intersection between the interface and free edges of bimaterial joints. A preliminary theoretical study of the singular stress field is carried out by the well-known Airy stress function method. The obtained stress laws are properly combined with the basic law of photoelasticity in order to define a procedure that permits the zone dominated by the singularity to be located and the stress intensity factors (SIFs) to be computed on the basis of full field data provided from automated photoelasticity. In particular, a systematic error analys…
On-grid residential development with photovoltaic systems in Southern Norway
2013
The application of residential photovoltaic (PV) systems is increasing rapidly worldwide. In Southern Norway, a group of on-grid smart houses with embedded PV systems, solar thermal collectors, and geothermal heat pumps are under development at Skarpnes. In this paper, performance analysis based on simulations of an on-grid residential house with PV system located at Skarpnes is presented. This project is expected to demonstrate zero energy and zero emission housing in Norway. This paper discusses a theoretical study of home energy consumption with electricity production for a single house from a PV system, including simulations of irradiation conditions and tilt angles, and of the PV syste…
New Theoretical Solution of the Stage-Discharge Relationship for Sharp-Crested and Broad Weirs
2012
In this paper, the outflow process of a sharp-crested and broad weir is studied using the dimensional analysis and the incomplete self-similarity theory. The new stage discharge is theoretically deduced and its testing is carried out using measurements both available in literature and obtained by laboratory runs carried out in this investigation.
Industrial Microreactor Process Development up to Production
2008
This chapter is about industrial applications of microprocess technology. Industry is not very active in publishing not only because of confidentiality reasons but also because of the absence of direct need for a corresponding profile. Thus, one cannot expect that the ongoing developments can be shown with a similar degree of completeness, clarity and detailedness, as this is possible for reviewing scientific contributions from academy with a wealth of peer-reviewed papers. Especially, the information of major interest of what has been transferred to production and how do the companies make profit with the new technology is usually kept secret. Thus, it has to be accepted that some informat…
The Contribution of TQM to Organizational Ambidexterity: The State of the Art and Promising Research Streams
2015
The purpose of this chapter is to present the state of the art of research on the impact of TQM implementation on organizational ambidexterity. The widespread diffusion of TQM in organizations in all sectors and the already established importance of ambidextrous capability for achieving long-term competitiveness make understanding the connection between both fields a worthwhile objective. We underline the need to include in the analysis the broad and complex nature of TQM. Due to the interactions between its principles and practices, total quality management can act as a platform in creating an ambidextrous organizational context. We also underline the importance of clarity in research on t…
Techno-economic optimum sizing of hybrid renewable energy system
2013
Using off grid hybrid renewable energy systems for rural electrification has become an attractive solution for those areas, where grid electricity is not feasible or cost of the grid extension is relatively large. Hybrid system combines several energy systems together, therefore it can supply high reliable electricity rather than a PV/battery system or a wind/battery system. But the most important thing is that the system should be economically attractive. To achieve both of these features, each of the components in the hybrid system should be optimally sized. This requires a detailed techno-economic analysis of different possible hybrid system configurations. The objective of this study is…
Transdisciplinary niches fostering Lifelong Learning
2011
Abstract The purpose of this paper is to outline a new approach of lifelong learning in the light of transdisciplinarity niches. Considering the issues education is currently confronting, a way to find solutions to these problems could be transdisciplinary research, consisting in transdisciplinary niches. The paper continues some previous research made in “Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu in order to adapt engineering education to lifelong learning. It also provides two examples of transdiciplinary niches presented in two doctoral theses, which are now developed by “EU 2020 research cluster” in the aforesaid university. Both theses require a transdisciplinary approach and involve fields fr…
Design, fabrication, and analysis of a spin-valve based current sensor
2004
Abstract In this work, we suggest a novel current sensor design, based on spin valve technology, with a full Wheatstone bridge configuration. The principal characteristic is that the four magnetoresistance sensing elements, fully active, are deposited and patterned at the same time. This way, differences among them should be insignificant, so improving voltage offset and drift temperature parameters. The complete IC fabrication process involves only three lithography steps, making the process cheaper and faster. In order to get a balanced bridge, the measured current must be properly driven, by means of an auxiliary PCB. Some prototypes, with different input impedances, have been fabricated…
