Deepen Into the Social Segregation of Secondary Schools in the Community of Madrid
2021
The Rise and Fall of Humanitarian Citizen Initiatives: A Simulation-Based Approach
2020
Citizen Initiatives for Global Solidarity (CIGS) are small, ad hoc, volunteer organizations that arise in certain humanitarian and development contexts. They operate outside of traditional aid structures and may or may not cooperate with traditional government and nongovernmental organizations. Using agent-based modeling, we derive narrative-based, qualitative scenarios from simulation data to extend the theoretical discussions of CIGS as a phenomenon. The scenarios allow further discussion of the role that CIGS may play as development and humanitarian response actors outside of the traditional context-specific descriptions of CIGS that permeate the development literature. We find that scen…
A link between the residual-based gradient plasticity theory and the analogous theories based on the virtual work principle
2009
A link is shown to exist between the so-called residual-based strain gradient plasticity theory and the analogous theories based on the (extended) virtual work principle (VWP). To this aim, the former theory is reformulated and cast in a residual-free form, whereby the insulation condition and the (nonlocal) Clausius–Duhem inequality, on which the theory is grounded, are substituted with equivalent residual-free ingredients, namely the energy balance condition and the residual-free form of the Clausius–Duhem inequality. The equivalence of the residual-free formulation to the original one is shown, also in their ability to cope with energetic size effects and interfacial energy ones. It emer…
Prediction of the difficulty level in a standardized reading comprehension test : contributions from cognitive psychology and psychometrics
2013
Exploiting multivalent nanoparticles for the supramolecular functionalization of graphene with a nonplanar recognition motif.
2013
The supramolecular modification of planar graphene with the geometri- cally mismatched, curved 9,10-di(1,3-dithiole-2-ylidene)-9,10-dihydroanthracene (exTTF) molecule is demonstrated. The exTTF-graphene interaction is governed by p-p and CH-p interactions, with a negligible contribution from charge transfer. We amplified these weak forces through multivalent gold nanoparticles. Our re- sults show that planarity is not a prerequisite for recognition motifs for graphene.
A trace partitioned Gray code forq-ary generalized Fibonacci strings
2015
AbstractWe provide a trace partitioned Gray code for the set of q-ary strings avoiding a pattern constituted by k consecutive equal symbols. The definition of this Gray code is based on two different constructions, according to the parity of q. This result generalizes, and is based on, a Gray code for binary strings avoiding k consecutive 0's.
NATURALLY AVAILABLE SOLUTIONS FOR BUILDING NEW METABOLIC TERRITORIES
2021
Building new metabolic territories is a proactive way of responding to the challenges and precariousness of the contemporary city. Byintegrating solutions inspired by new scientific advances in urban ecology, cities are able to address some of the environmental threats. Many European cities are implementing alternative nature-based solutions to protect their health and tackle water scarcity, land consumption and climate change, to increase citizens' well-being. Wellbeing and health (Agenda 2030) are the most important analytical parameters for measuring the results and impacts of environmental project actions. With this in mind, the study presents a "nature-action" project hypothesis for wh…
Load mismatch of grid-connected photovoltaic systems: Review of the effects and analysis in an urban context
2013
Abstract The mismatch between generated and consumed electricity is a relevant topic of the energy and economic assessment of photovoltaic (PV) systems. Due to the load mismatch some amount of PV electricity may be exported to the grid because the electrical demand is temporarily lower than production, whereas a consumption, which is higher than production and/or that does not match the available PV generation, will require to be supplemented by the public grid electricity. The presence of the load mismatch can cause the effect of disadvantageously purchasing electricity from the grid and/or squandering the unexploited PV energy. If only a very small part of the PV generation is used to sup…
Weighted Likelihood Function of Multiple Statistical Parameters to Retrieve 2D TRUS-MR Slice Correspondece for Prostate Biopsy
2012
International audience; This paper presents a novel method to identify the 2D axial Magnetic Resonance (MR) slice from a pre-acquired MR prostate volume that closely corresponds to the 2D axial Transrectal Ultrasound (TRUS) slice obtained during prostate biopsy. The shape-context representations of the segmented prostate contours in both the imaging modalities are used to establish point correspondences using Bhattacharyya distance. Thereafter, Chi-square distance is used to find the prostate shape similarities between the MR slices and the TRUS slice. Normalized mutual information and correlation coefficient between the TRUS and MR slices are computed to find the information theoretic simi…
A hybrid framework of multiple active appearance models and global registration for 3D prostate segmentation in MRI.
2012
International audience; Real-time fusion of Magnetic Resonance (MR) and Trans Rectal Ultra Sound (TRUS) images aid in the localization of malignant tissues in TRUS guided prostate biopsy. Registration performed on segmented contours of the prostate reduces computational complexity and improves the multimodal registration accuracy. However, accurate and computationally efficient 3D segmentation of the prostate in MR images could be a challenging task due to inter-patient shape and intensity variability of the prostate gland. In this work, we propose to use multiple statistical shape and appearance models to segment the prostate in 2D and a global registration framework to impose shape restri…
