La educación para la promoción de los derechos humanos de la tercera generación
2008
The paper deals with the ways to promote the third generation human rights through education. It underlines the evolutionary dynamism of human rights and the necessity to promote a culture based on their recognition. Solidarity is analysed as the value which specify this generation of rights. Then the author defends the rights to a healthy environment, to peoples’ development, and to peace, as key components of any international political community or local communities aiming to meet the requirements of human dignity. Finally, he proposes some pedagogical practices to help the students to become conscious and responsible citizens, so they have the competence to ask to individuals and groups…
Some topological properties of the Inverse Lens Mapping
2011
Away from critical curves, lens mapping can be seen as a linear invertible transformation of the plane even for regions (cells) of relatively large size. However, close to critical curves the departures from linearity can be very strong. We discuss the topological problems induced by the mapping of regions of the image plane that include critical curves (critical cells).
The Text of the Lord’s Prayer in Marcion’s Gospel
2012
In text-critical studies of the Lukan version of the Lord’s Prayer (Lk 11,2-4), one of the most interesting, and at the same time most problematic, witnesses is Marcion’s Gospel. Scholarship for much of the twentieth century has generally followed the reconstruction of Adolf von Harnack in his magisterial work on Marcion: ... (και) μή άφeς ημάς eίσeνeχθήναι eις πeιρασμόν.1 As a result, it has more or less been assumed that this was the wording of the Lord’s Prayer in Marcion’s text.2 A major problem with th…
Don't Fence Me In: Barricade Sociality and Political Struggles in Mexico and Latvia
2019
AbstractIn 1991, barricades in the streets of Rīga, Latvia, shielded important landmarks from Soviet military units looking to prevent the dissolution of the USSR; in 2006, barricades in the streets of Oaxaca, Mexico, defended members of the Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca from paramilitary incursions. We employ these two cases to compare the historically specific public socialities and politics formed through spatial and material practices in moments of crisis and in their aftermath. We show how the barricades continue to animate social and political formations and imaginaries, providing a sense of both past solidarity and future possibilities against which the present, including…
Single-particle properties of the Hubbard model in a novel three-pole approximation
2017
We study the 2D Hubbard model using the Composite Operator Method within a novel three-pole approximation. Motivated by the long-standing experimental puzzle of the single-particle properties of the underdoped cuprates, we include in the operatorial basis, together with the usual Hubbard operators, a field describing the electronic transitions dressed by the nearest-neighbor spin fluctuations, which play a crucial role in the unconventional behavior of the Fermi surface and of the electronic dispersion. Then, we adopt this approximation to study the single-particle properties in the strong coupling regime and find an unexpected behavior of the van Hove singularity that can be seen as a prec…
Beyond crisis management? The role of Citizen Initiatives for Global Solidarity in humanitarian aid: the case of Lesvos
2019
In recent years, what has been called citizen initiatives for global solidarity (CIGS) have grown considerably in numbers across Europe and beyond. Lately, CIGS have also received attention as they...
Nanoscopic hybrid systems with a polarity-controlled gate-like scaffolding for the colorimetric signalling of long-chain carboxylates
2007
Hybrid mesoporous systems containing a gate-like ensemble functionalised with imidazolium groups and a dye are used for the selective colorimetric sensing of long-chain carboxylates. Amoros del Toro, Pedro Jose, Pedro.Amoros@uv.es
A preliminary study to assess the impact of maternal age on stress-related variables in healthy nulliparous women
2017
Purpose: Childbearing age has progressively increased in industrialized countries. The impact of this delay on motherhood, however, requires further research. Methods: The study sample included a prospective cohort of healthy nulliparous pregnant women aged between 18 and 40 years (n = 148) assessed at 38 weeks gestation (Time#1, T1), 48 h after birth (Time#2, T2), and 3 months after birth (Time#3, T3). The effect of age on psychological, biological, and social variables was evaluated. Maternal psychological symptoms in terms of depression and anxiety were assessed at T1-T3; and parenting stress at T3. Stress biomarkers (cortisol, alpha-amylase) were determined in mothers at T1-T3. Question…
Coarse-graining dipolar interactions in simple fluids and polymer solutions: Monte Carlo studies of the phase behavior
2009
In this paper we investigate the phase diagram of pure dipolar substances and their mixtures with short alkanes, using grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations of simplified coarse-grained models. Recently, an efficient coarse-grained model for simple quadrupolar molecules, based on a Lennard-Jones (LJ) interaction plus a spherically averaged quadrupolar potential, has been shown to be successful in predicting single-component and mixture phase diagrams. Motivated by these results, we investigate the phase diagrams of simple dipolar molecules (and their mixtures with alkanes) using a spherically averaged potential. First, we test the model on pure components. A generalized (state-dependent) …
Experimental Modeling of Submerged Pivot Weir
2020
An inclined rectangular overflow structure, also called a pivot weir, consists of a rectangular plate, angled downstream from the vertical, that can be used as an upstream water level control device. A pivot weir is submerged when the upstream water level is influenced by the downstream flow depth. In this paper, to investigate factors influencing submerged flow conditions, an extensive experimental program including 251 experimental trials was carried out using weir inclination angles of 39.6°, 53°, 85°, and 90° and weir heights ranging from 0.263 to 0.312 m. A formula to distinguish between free and submerged flow conditions was developed using the Π theorem of dimensional analysis and th…
