Kawasaki disease in Sicily: clinical description and markers of disease severity

2016

Background: Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute systemic vasculitis of small and middle size arteries; 15-25 % of untreated patients and 5 % of patients treated with intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) develop coronary artery lesions (CAL). Many studies tried to find the most effective treatment in the management of resistant KD and to select the risk factors for CAL. Our data are assessed on children from west Sicily, characterized by a genetic heterogeneity. Methods: We studied the clinical data of 70 KD Sicilian children (36 males: 51 %; 34 females: 49 %), analysed retrospectively, including: demographic and laboratory parameters; echocardiographic findings at diagnosis, at 2, 6 and 8 weeks,…

Common genetic variation of the cholesteryl ester transfer protein gene strongly predicts future cardiovascular death in patients with coronary arter…

2003

OBJECTIVES We sought to evaluate the association between cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) genotypes and the risk of future cardiovascular mortality in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). BACKGROUND Polymorphisms of the CETP gene influence CETP activity and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol concentration and might affect the long-term prognosis and response to statin therapy in patients with CAD. METHODS We used serum samples and deoxyribonucleic acid collected at baseline from a prospective cohort of 1,211 patients with CAD prospectively followed up (median follow-up of 4.1 years), 82 of whom experienced a fatal cardiovascular event. The CETP/C-629A and I405V poly…

On the Function of the Spiral Prominence

1967

The suppression of hematic circulation of the internal auditory artery of a guinea-pig causes the necrosis of all anatomic formations of the cochlear duct, with the exception of the organ of Corti of the vestibular segment. The author confirms his hypothesis about the origin of the cochlear endolymph and thinks that the prominence provides the vegetative life of the organ of Corti.

Vaskulärer Schwindel

2002

Ischemia, hemorrhages, and other vascular disorders can result in various central or peripheral vestibular syndromes with vertigo, oculomotor/balance disturbances, and nausea. The vascular vertigo syndromes listed in Table 1 can however be brought about by other causes such as demyelitizing focuses in multiple sclerosis or space-occupying lesions, so that not only localization of the damaged structure but also the various etiologies are decisive for the choice of therapy. Occasionally, combined functional disturbances of the peripheral and central vestibular system appear, such as an infarction of the inferior anterior cerebellar artery, which supplies the labyrinth and parts of the brainste…

Unusual Presentation of Bilateral Carotid Artery Dissection: The Importance of Reasoning Outside the Box

2021

A bilateral internal carotid artery dissection presenting with atypical symptoms of cerebral hypoperfusion has been rarely reported, especially in the absence of obvious precipitating factors. A middle-aged woman presented to the emergency department with a 2-day-history of progressive left arm numbness and weakness, confusion, disorientation and clumsiness worsened by upright position. A cerebral hypoperfusion condition was hypothesized and confirmed by a CT angiography, which showed bilateral internal carotid dissection with uncertain etiology. Screening for predisposing conditions to spontaneous carotid arteries dissection was basically negative. Regarding potential precipitating factors…

Red Wine and Cardiovascular Health

2012

There is strong epidemiological evidence that light-to-moderate consumption of alcoholic drinks, but neither zero nor more than moderate intake, reduces mortality from all causes and also diminishes cardiovascular risk.1 The lowest risk for coronary heart disease mortality is seen with 1 to 2 drinks (12.5–25g alcohol) per day. Article, see p 1065 Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and there is a clear inverse relationship between light-to-moderate alcohol intake and blood pressure. Thus, the reduced cardiovascular risk associated with moderate consumption of alcoholic drinks may be due, in part, to a reduction in blood pressure. The greatest blood pressure benef…

''High-Intensity Interval Training in Cardiac Rehabilitation''

2012

Guiraud, Thibaut | Nigam, Anil | Gremeaux, Vincent | Meyer, Philippe | Juneau, Martin | Bosquet, Laurent; International audience; ''High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is frequently used in sports training. The effects on cardiorespiratory and muscle systems have led scientists to consider its application in the field of cardiovascular diseases. The objective of this review is to report the effects and interest of HIIT in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and heart failure (HF), as well as in persons with high cardiovascular risk. A non-systematic review of the literature in the MEDLINE database using keywords 'exercise', 'high-intensity interval training', 'interval training'…

Temporary occlusions of coronaries arteries by thermoreversible gel : leGoo.To experimental to human case

2011

ObjectifsThe objective of this work is to assess the feasibility of using the LeGoo gel to occlude the coronary arteries temporarily, to facilitate the performance of coronary bypass (off-pump technique), initially in pigs then in human. A Secondary objective was to evaluate the impact of the injection on the endothelium and myocardium.MethodesThe first study evaluated in pigs the feasibility of using LeGoo, while performing coronary bypass on the left anterior descending or on the right coronary artery and to evaluate the endothelial function of coronary arteries occluded by the gel.The second study analyzed endothelial function of internal thoracic arteries, in the area occluded by the ge…

Walk tests : a standardizable tool to assess capacities in cardio-vascular disease

2011

Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases remain the first cause of mortality and handicap in the world. With the improvements in the management of the acute phase, the number of patients with limited exercise capacity due to chronic cardiovascular disease is increasing. The aim of this thesis was to conduct a thorough study of the use of standardized walk tests to assess exercise capacity in coronary artery disease patients. We first explain the concepts of handicap and quality of life in chronic diseases, and the need for functional evaluations in order to assess their impact and evolution. We then present the current modalities of cardiac rehabilitation, emphasizing the importance of p…
