Derivation and Validation of a Chronic Total Coronary Occlusion Intervention Procedural Success Score From the 20,000-Patient EuroCTO Registry : the …

2019

Objectives: The aim was to establish a contemporary scoring system to predict the outcome of chronic total occlusion coronary angioplasty. Background: Interventional treatment of chronic total coronary occlusions (CTOs) is a developing subspecialty. Predictors of technical success or failure have been derived from datasets of modest size. A robust scoring tool could facilitate case selection and inform decision making. Methods: The study analyzed data from the EuroCTO registry. This prospective database was set up in 2008 and includes >20,000 cases submitted by CTO expert operators (>50 cases/year). Derivation (n = 14,882) and validation (n = 5,745) datasets were created to develop a …

Surgical repair of popliteal artery aneurysms remains a safe treatment option in the endovascular era: a 10-year single-center study

2012

Introduction: Endovascular popliteal artery aneurysm repair has emerged recently as a feasible alternative to standard surgical repair. However the evidence from the literature is still limited, with only case reports, case series and one small randomized trial. Currently these data suggest the use of stent-grafts in patients at very high surgical risk. The purpose of this study is to present our surgical experience in popliteal artery aneurysm repair in an era of endovascular philosophy. Materials and Methods: Data from 36 consecutive patients who were admitted to our hospital from January 2000 to April 2010, were analyzed retrospectively. Twenty-six patients underwent surgical treatment t…

Diagonal ear lobe crease and atherosclerosis : a review of the medical literature and dental implications

2011

In Spain a significant number of individuals die from atherosclerotic disease of the coronary and carotid arteries without having classic risk factors and prodromal symptoms. The diagonal ear lobe crease (DELC) has been characterized in the medical literature as a surrogate marker which can identify high risk patients having occult atherosclerosis. This topic however has not been examined in either the medical or dental literature emanating from Spain. The majority of clinical, angiography and postmortem reports support the premise that DELC is a valuable extravascular physical sign able to distinguish some patients at risk of succumbing to atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries. A minori…

Performance cognitive in pazienti anziani sottoposti a endoarterectomia o a stenting carotideo: Studio di follow up a 12 mesi

2010

Introduction. In this study we investigated short and long-term impact of carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and carotid artery stenting (CAS) in cognitively healthy elderly subjects with severe carotid stenosis on several cognitive functions by neuropsychological evaluation before surgery and after three and twelve months. Methods. Cognition, mood and functional status were evaluated in 28 patients undergoing CEA (24 M, 4 F, 72.6 ± 5.8 years old) and in 29 patients undergoing CAS (17 M, 12 F, 75.1 ± 5.7 years old) by a broad spectrum of tests assessing mood, functional status, memory, attention, verbal fluency, visuospatial and constructional abilities. Results. No significant differences in s…

Meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies from the CHARGE consortium identifies common variants associated with carotid intima media thickness…

2011

Carotid intima media thickness (cIMT) and plaque determined by ultrasonography are established measures of subclinical atherosclerosis that each predicts future cardiovascular disease events. We conducted a meta-analysis of genome-wide association data in 31,211 participants of European ancestry from nine large studies in the setting of the Cohorts for Heart and Aging Research in Genomic Epidemiology (CHARGE) Consortium. We then sought additional evidence to support our findings among 11,273 individuals using data from seven additional studies. In the combined meta-analysis, we identified three genomic regions associated with common carotid intima media thickness and two different regions a…

Reduced In Vivo Aortic Uptake of Radiolabeled Oxidation-Specific Antibodies Reflects Changes in Plaque Composition Consistent With Plaque Stabilizati…

2004

Objective— Labeled oxidation-specific antibodies (Ox-AB) detect, quantify, and noninvasively image lipid-rich atherosclerotic lesions. However, it is unknown whether Ox-AB detect plaque stabilization. Methods and Results— The aortic uptake of intravenously injected 125 I-MDA2 (Ox-AB to malondialdehyde [MDA]–low-density lipoprotein [LDL]) was quantitated in: (1) LDL receptor−/− mice with established atherosclerosis continued on Western diet (Progression) or switched to chow (Regression) or chow+vitamins E and C (Regression-VIT) for 6 months; and (2) Watanabe rabbits (3- to 57-months old) with naturally evolved atherosclerotic lesions. In mice, the Progression group had more extensive athero…
