Sex-dependent changes in the pulmonary vasoconstriction potential of newborn rats following short-term oxygen exposure
2012
Chronic exposure to supplemental oxygen (O(2)) induces lung damage and mortality in a sex-dependent manner. The effect of short-term hyperoxia on the newborn pulmonary vasculature is unknown but is, however, of clinical significance in the neonatal resuscitation context. We hypothesize that short-term hyperoxia has a sex-dependent effect on the pulmonary vasculature.Following 1-h 100% O(2) exposure, the pulmonary arteries and lung tissues of newborn rats were evaluated.Superoxide dismutase 3 (SOD3) expression in female pups' lungs was increased as compared with that in the lungs of male pups. As compared with air-treated pups, the response of male pups to thromboxane was increased by O(2), …
Electrophysiology and neuronal integrity following systemic arterial hypotension in a rat model of unilateral carotid artery occlusion.
2007
Patients with carotid artery stenosis may be particularly susceptible to hypotension-associated cerebral ischemia and subsequent neurological sequelae. Measuring somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP), electroencephalogram (EEG), direct current (DC) potential, and histology, we compared the temporal evolution of cortical functional perturbations as well as neuronal integrity in a model of unilateral carotid artery occlusion and systemic hypobaric hypotension (HH) at the lower limit of cerebral blood flow autoregulation (50 mm Hg). Serial measurements of EEG power spectra as well as SEP-amplitudes and latencies of N10.3 were performed before, during, and up to 60 min after 30 min-HH (n=7) or …
Hybrid Endograft Solution for Complex Iliac Anatomy
2010
The purpose of this study was to evaluate single-center results with selective use of Gore Excluder limbs (W.L. Gore & Associates, Flagstaff, AZ) in a Cook Zenith body (Cook Inc, Bloomington, IN) for elective endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair. A prospectively held database for patients with AAA, who were treated endovascularly between March 1999 and July 2008, was queried for patients treated with a Cook Zenith body and one or two Gore Excluder limbs. Indication, technical success, late limb occlusion, and disconnection were evaluated. From 276 patients who were treated with a Zenith body, 29 underwent repair with hybrid graft components with, in total, 41 Gore Exclud…
Benefit of primary percutaneous coronary interventions in the elderly with ST segment elevation myocardial infarction
2020
Objective Primary percutaneous coronary intervention (P-PCI) has demonstrated its efficacy in patients with ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). However, patients with STEMI >= 75 years receive less P-PCI than younger patients despite their higher in-hospital morbimortality. The objective of this analysis was to determine the effectiveness of P-PCI in patients with STEMI >= 75 years. Methods We included 979 patients with STEMI >= 75 years, from the ATencion HOspitalaria del Sindrome coronario study, a registry of 8142 consecutive patients with acute coronary syndrome admitted at 31 Spanish hospitals in 2014-2016. We calculated a propensity score (PS) for the indication of P-P…
Physical training and hypertension have opposite effects on endothelial brain-derived neurotrophic factor expression
2013
AIMS: Changes in circulating brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels were reported in patients with or at risk for cardiovascular diseases associated with endothelial dysfunction, suggesting a link between BDNF and endothelial functionality. However, little is known on cardiovascular BDNF. Our aim was to investigate levels/localization, function, and relevance of cardiovascular BDNF. METHODS AND RESULTS: BDNF levels (western blotting) and localization (immunostaining) were assessed in the heart and aorta from rats with impaired (spontaneously hypertensive rats [SHR]), normal (Wistar Kyoto rats [WKY]), and improved (SHR and WKY subjected to physical training) endothelial function. BD…
Shunting of the Microcirculation After Mesenteric Ischemia and Reperfusion Is a Function of Ischemia Time and Increases Mortality
2006
Shunting of the microcirculation contributes to the pathology of sepsis and septic shock. The authors address the hypothesis that shunting of the microcirculation occurs after superior mesenteric artery occlusion (SMAO) and reperfusion, and explore functional consequences.Spontaneously breathing animals (rats) (n = 30) underwent SMAO for 0 (controls), 30 (SMAO_30) or 60 min (SMAO_60) followed by reperfusion (4 h) with normal saline. Leukocyte-endothelial interactions in mesenteric venules were quantified in an exteriorized ileal loop using intravital microscopy. Abdominal blood flow was recorded continuously, and arterial blood gases were analyzed at intervals. The above groups were matched…
Anastomotic Pseudoaneurysm Complicating Renal Transplantation: Treatment Options
2010
Introduction: Anastomotic pseudoaneurysm following renal transplantation is uncommon. Indications for repair, treatment options and outcomes remain controversial. Report: We present 6 renal transplant recipients with large anastomotic pseudoaneurysms. Five of the patients underwent open repair while one had a stent-grafting and delayed transplant nephrectomy for a ruptured pseudoaneurysm. A transplant nephrectomy was needed in all cases but one. Arterial reconstruction enabled limb salvage in all cases. One patient died of sepsis postoperatively. No patient presented late infection, failure of vascular reconstruction, nor pseudoaneurysm recurrence. Conclusions: Surgical excision of anastomo…
Efficacy and one-year outcomes of Luminor® paclitaxel-coated drug-eluting balloon in the treatment of popliteal artery atherosclerosis lesions
2021
Purpose: Reporting outcomes with a new generation paclitaxel eluting balloon (Luminor®; iVascular, Vascular, S.L.U., Barcelona, Spain) in the popliteal district. Endovascular treatment of popliteal artery atherosclerotic disease is still debated without definitive evidences. Methods: From January to June 2019, patients’ data presenting popliteal artery atherosclerotic diseases and treated with the Luminor® (iVascular) drug eluting balloon (DEB) were prospectively collected. Critical limb ischemia (CLI) or severe claudication associated with popliteal artery stenosis >50% were the inclusion criteria. Measured outcomes were technical success, early and late results; including mortality, mo…
Sex differences in mortality in stable patients undergoing vasodilator stress cardiovascular magnetic resonance
2021
Abstract Introduction The prognostic value and therapeutic implications of ischemia as derived from vasodilator stress cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) could differ in men and women, but it has not been stablished. Purpose We assessed the influence of the ischemic burden as derived from CMR on the risk of death and the effect of revascularization across sex. Methods We evaluated 6,237 consecutive patients with known or suspected chronic coronary syndrome (CCS). Extensive ischemia was defined as >5 segments with perfusion deficit. Multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression models were used. Results A total of 2,371 (38.0%) patients were women and 583 (9.3%) underwent CMR-r…
Short-term and long-term results of cardiac surgery in elderly and very elderly patients
2011
Objective: Cardiac operations in elderly patients are increasingly frequent and imply major clinical, ethical, and economic issues. Operative and 5-year results of cardiac operations in patients aged 79 years or more are known in limited series, and a debate is ongoing on the appropriateness of selection of patients for surgery. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed our experience in 6802 patients aged 79 years or more who had received a cardiac operation. Surgical candidates were selected according to functional status, crude operative risk, and social context and were managed according to a multimodality protocol. Results: Mean age was 82 years and surgery was nonelective in 1613 cases (23…
