Methodological advances in brain connectivity

2012

Determining how distinct neurons or brain regions are connected and communicate with each other is a crucial point in neuroscience, as it allows to investigate how the functional integration of specialized neural populations enables the emergence of coherent cognitive and behavioral states. The general concept of brain connectivity encompasses different aspects: structural connectivity is related to the description of anatomical pathways and synaptic connections; functional connectivity investigates statistical dependencies between spatially separated brain regions; effective connectivity refers to models aimed at elucidating driver-response relationships. The study of these different modes…

Multilanguage Semantic Interoperability in Distributed Applications

2013

JOSI is a software framework that tries to simplify the development of such kinds of applications both by providing the possibility of working on models for representing such semantic information and by offering some implementations of such models that can be easily used by software developers without any knowledge about semantic models and languages. This software library allows the representation of domain models through Java interfaces and annotations and then to use such a representation for automatically generating an implementation of domain models in different programming languages (currently Java and C++). Moreover, JOSI supports the interoperability with other applications both by …

New Objective Refraction Metric Based on Sphere Fitting to the Wavefront

2017

Purpose. To develop an objective refraction formula based on the ocular wavefront error (WFE) expressed in terms of Zernike coefficients and pupil radius, which would be an accurate predictor of subjective spherical equivalent (SE) for different pupil sizes.Methods. A sphere is fitted to the ocular wavefront at the center and at a variable distance,t. The optimal fitting distance, topt, is obtained empirically from a dataset of 308 eyes as a function of objective refraction pupil radius,r0, and used to define the formula of a new wavefront refraction metric (MTR). The metric is tested in another, independent dataset of 200 eyes.Results. For pupil radiir0≤2 mm, the new metric predicts the equ…

An active form of sphingosine kinase-1 is released in the extracellular medium as component of membrane vesicles shed by two human tumor cell line.

2010

Expression of sphingosine kinase-1 (SphK-1) correlates with a poor survival rate of tumor patients. This effect is probably due to the ability of SphK-1 to be released into the extracellular medium where it catalyzes the biosynthesis of sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), a signaling molecule endowed with profound proangiogenic effects. SphK-1 is a leaderless protein which is secreted by an unconventional mechanism. In this paper, we will show that in human hepatocarcinoma Sk-Hep1 cells, extracellular signaling is followed by targeting the enzyme to the cell surface and parallels targeting of FGF-2 to the budding vesicles. We will also show that SphK-1 is present in a catalitycally active form i…

Localization Operators and an Uncertainty Principle for the Discrete Short Time Fourier Transform

2014

Localization operators in the discrete setting are used to obtain information on a signalffrom the knowledge on the support of its short time Fourier transform. In particular, the extremal functions of the uncertainty principle for the discrete short time Fourier transform are characterized and their connection with functions that generate a time-frequency basis is studied.

A Probabilistic Analysis to Quantify the Effect of March 11, 2004, Attacks in Madrid on the March 14 Elections in Spain: A Dynamic Modelling Approach

2015

[EN] The bomb attacks in Madrid three days before the general elections of March 14, 2004, and their possible influence on the victory of PSOE (Spanish Workers Socialist Party), defeating PP (Popular Party), have been a matter of study from several points of view (i.e., sociological, political, or statistical). In this paper, we present a dynamic model based on a system of differential equations such that it, using data from Spanish CIS (National Center of Sociological Research), describes the evolution of voting intention of the Spanish people over time. Using this model, we conclude that the probability is very low that the PSOE would have won had the attack not happened. Moreover, after t…

The Exponential Dichotomy under Discretization on General Approximation Scheme

2011

This paper is devoted to the numerical analysis of abstract parabolic problem 𝑢  ( 𝑡 ) = 𝐴 𝑢 ( 𝑡 ) ; 𝑢 ( 0 ) = 𝑢 0 , with hyperbolic generator 𝐴 . We are developing a general approach to establish a discrete dichotomy in a very general setting in case of discrete approximation in space and time. It is a well-known fact that the phase space in the neighborhood of the hyperbolic equilibrium can be split in a such way that the original initial value problem is reduced to initial value problems with exponential decaying solutions in opposite time direction. We use the theory of compact approximation principle and collectively condensing approximation to show that such a decomposition o…

An Effective Approach for Human Activity Classification Using Feature Fusion and Machine Learning Methods

2022

Recent advances in image processing and machine learning methods have greatly enhanced the ability of object classification from images and videos in different applications. Classification of human activities is one of the emerging research areas in the field of computer vision. It can be used in several applications including medical informatics, surveillance, human computer interaction, and task monitoring. In the medical and healthcare field, the classification of patients’ activities is important for providing the required information to doctors and physicians for medication reactions and diagnosis. Nowadays, some research approaches to recognize human activity from videos and images ha…

The Peroxisomal 3-keto-acyl-CoA thiolase B Gene Expression Is under the Dual Control of PPARα and HNF4α in the Liver

2011

PPARα and HNF4α are nuclear receptors that control gene transcription by direct binding to specific nucleotide sequences. Using transgenic mice deficient for either PPARα or HNF4α, we show that the expression of the peroxisomal3-keto-acyl-CoA thiolase B(Thb) is under the dependence of these two transcription factors. Transactivation and gel shift experiments identified a novel PPAR response element within intron 3 of theThbgene, by which PPARα but not HNF4α transactivates. Intriguingly, we found that HNF4α enhanced PPARα/RXRα transactivation from TB PPRE3 in a DNA-binding independent manner. Coimmunoprecipitation assays supported the hypothesis that HNF4α was physically interacting with RXR…
