Pancreatic islet transplantation consists of replacing insulin-producing cells to restore normal glycemia in diabetic patients. This is a minimal invasive procedure that has been proved successful. Mapping lava flows at Etna Volcano using Google Earth Engine, open-access satellite data, and machine learning

Estimating eruptive parameters is fundamental to assess the volcanic hazards posed to the community living at the edge of active volcanoes. Here, we analyzed satellite remote sensing data by using machine learning unsupervised and supervised techniques and analytical approaches, i.e., mathematical-physics and statistics formulations, to map lava flows emitted during the long sequences of short-lived, violent eruptions occurred at Etna volcano between December 2020 and March 2021. Sound event detection is the task of identifying automatically the presence and temporal boundaries of sound events within an input audio stream. A fuzzy-based tool for modelization and analysis of the vulnerability of aquifers: a case study

Abstract A fuzzy-based tool, called FUZZY-SRA (Fuzzy Spatial Reliability Analysis), is used for realizing a more “reliable” study of the values of the final parameters concerning the vulnerability of aquifers located in the territory of Cava de' Tirreni, city in the district of Salerno (Italy). The SINTACS method is adopted for evaluating the involved parameters and these evaluations are modelled from attributes represented from triangular fuzzy numbers which supply the overall final information if combined with suitable algebraic operations. The tool FUZZY-SRA is implemented inside a GIS (Geographical Information Systems) software.

Evaluating similarity measures for gaze patterns in the context of representational competence in physics education

The competent handling of representations is required for understanding physics' concepts, developing problem-solving skills, and achieving scientific expertise. Using eye-tracking methodology, we present the contributions of this paper as follows: We first investigated the preferences of students with the different levels of knowledge; experts, intermediates, and novices, in representational competence in the domain of physics problem-solving. Investigating Long-Range Dependence in E-Commerce Web Traffic

This paper addresses the problem of investigating long-range dependence (LRD) and self-similarity in Web traffic. Popular techniques for estimating the intensity of LRD via the Hurst parameter are presented. Using a set of traces of a popular e-commerce site, the presence and the nature of LRD in Web traffic is examined. Our results confirm the self-similar nature of traffic at a Web server input, however the resulting estimates of the Hurst parameter vary depending on the trace and the technique used.
