“This is Just a Prototype” : How Ethics Are Ignored in Software Startup-Like Environments
2020
Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions are becoming increasingly common in software development endeavors, and consequently exert a growing societal influence as well. Due to their unique nature, AI based systems influence a wide range of stakeholders with or without their consent, and thus the development of these systems necessitates a higher degree of ethical consideration than is currently carried out in most cases. Various practical examples of AI failures have also highlighted this need. However, there is only limited research on methods and tools for implementing AI ethics in software development, and we currently have little knowledge of the state of practice. In this study, we expl…
AI Ethics in Industry: A Research Framework
2019
Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems exert a growing influence on our society. As they become more ubiquitous, their potential negative impacts also become evident through various real-world incidents. Following such early incidents, academic and public discussion on AI ethics has highlighted the need for implementing ethics in AI system development. However, little currently exists in the way of frameworks for understanding the practical implementation of AI ethics. In this paper, we discuss a research framework for implementing AI ethics in industrial settings. The framework presents a starting point for empirical studies into AI ethics but is still being developed further based on its pr…

Emergency Response Model as a part of the Smart Society
2021
Centralized hybrid emergency model with predictive emergency response functions is necessary when the purpose is to protect the critical infrastructure (CI). A shared common operational picture among Public Protection and Disaster Relief (PPDR) authorities means that a real-time communication link from the local level to the state-level exists. If a cyberattack would interrupt electricity transmission, telecommunication networks will discontinue operating. Cyberattack becomes physical in the urban and maritime area if an intrusion has not been detected. Hybrid threats require hybrid responses. The purpose of this qualitative research was to find out technological-related fundamental risks …
Intelligent Tutoring System in Archaeology
2019
A method that uses artificial intelligence for the taxonomical characterization of bone remains in archaeological sites is shown. The main goal of this method is to help students and archaeologists in the classification of samples in order to improve the efficiency of their tasks during the campaigns at archaeological sites. The development of the system implies several steps: training of classification algorithms, development of a user-friendly interface and implementation of gamification techniques to improve learning motivation and the efficiency of the system in the learning process. This system will help archaeology students to classify new samples. In this prototype, by introducing ch…

Pulsed flow-through cultivation of Margaritifera margaritifera : effects of water source and food quantity on the survival and growth of juveniles
2020
AbstractConservation of the endangered freshwater pearl mussel (FPM) includes artificially rearing juveniles, but the pulsed flow-through (PFT) method, enabling the continuous renewal of water and food in culture containers, has not been applied to FPM. This study tested the PFT method in culture of FPM juveniles, and the effect of water source (tap vs well water) and food concentration (mixture of commercial phytoplankton products) on the survival and growth of juveniles. Beaker-specific survival rates varied from 0 to 100% (mean: 34%) and from 0 to 58% (mean: 16%) in the 1st (2-week) and 2nd (10-week) experiment, respectively. In the 1st experiment, juveniles attained statistically signif…
Application of the Information Bottleneck method to discover user profiles in a Web store
2018
The paper deals with the problem of discovering groups of Web users with similar behavioral patterns on an e-commerce site. We introduce a novel approach to the unsupervised classification of user sessions, based on session attributes related to the user click-stream behavior, to gain insight into characteristics of various user profiles. The approach uses the agglomerative Information Bottleneck (IB) algorithm. Based on log data for a real online store, efficiency of the approach in terms of its ability to differentiate between buying and non-buying sessions was validated, indicating some possible practical applications of the our method. Experiments performed for a number of session sampl…
Nonlinear black-box models for short-term forecasting of air temperature in the town of Palermo
2011
Weather data are crucial to correctly design buildings and their heating and cooling systems and to assess their energy performances. In the intensely urbanized towns the effect of climatic parameters is further emphasized by the Urban Heat Island (UHI) phenomenon, known as the increase in the air temperature of urban areas, compared to the one measured in the extra-urban areas. The analysis of the heat island needs detailed local climate data which can be collected only by a dedicated weather monitoring system. The Department of Energy and Environmental Researches of the University of Palermo (Italy) has built up a weather monitoring system that works 24 hours per day and makes data availa…
