Biology of gama delta T Cells in Tuberculosis and Malaria
2002
Tuberculosis and malaria remain the leading causes of mortality among human infectious diseases in the world. It is estimated that 3 to 5 million people die from tuberculosis and malaria each year. Although it is traditionally believed that CD4 and CD8 alphabeta T lymphocytes are mandatory for protective immune responses against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Plasmodium falciparum (the ethiologic agents of tuberculosis and the most severe form of malaria, respectively), there is still incomplete understanding of the mechanisms of immune protection and of the causes of its failure in the affected patients. Several studies in humans and animal models have suggested that Vgamma9/Vdelta2 T cell…
Ortokeratoloģijas efektivitāte tuvredzības stabilizācijā
2018
1993
This is a reconstruction of the only extant Catalan versión of Guillaume Caoursin's Obsidionis Rhodie descriptio, based on the passages of this interesting text assimiled by Joan Esteve in his Liber elegantiarum.
Plasmodium falciparumMalaria: Reduction of Endothelial Cell Apoptosis In Vitro
2005
ABSTRACTOrgan failure inPlasmodium falciparummalaria is associated with neutrophil activation and endothelial damage. This study investigates whether neutrophil-induced endothelial damage involves apoptosis and whether it can be prevented by neutralization of neutrophil secretory products. Endothelial cells from human umbilical veins were coincubated with neutrophils from healthy donors and with sera from eight patients withP. falciparummalaria, three patients withP. vivaxmalaria, and three healthy controls. Endothelial apoptosis was demonstrated by terminal deoxynucleotidyltransferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling (TUNEL) and annexin V staining. The rate of apoptosis of cells was …
HSP70 gene expression in Mytilus galloprovincialis hemocytes is triggered by moderate heat shock and Vibrio anguillarum, but not by V. splendidus or …
2005
Complete sequence of HSP70 cDNA from the mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis was established before quantifying its expression following moderate heat shock or injection of heat-killed bacteria. HSP70 cDNA is comprised of 2378 bp including one ORF of 654 aa, with a predicted 70 bp 5'-UTR and a 343 bp 3'-UTR (GenBank, 18 Jan 05, AY861684). Alignment identity ranged from 89% for Crassostrea ariakensis to 72% for C. virginica. Curiously, HSP70 gene and cDNA sequences from M. galloprovincialis, deposited later (03 and 27 May), show only 73% identity with the present sequence. Meanwhile, characteristic motifs of the HSP70 family were located in conserved positions. Expression of HSP70 gene was qua…
XII Tab. 6.3 nelle testimonianze di Cicerone
2011
The investigation consists largely in a renewed analysis of some well-known Cicero's passages (top. 4.23; pro Caec. 19.54; de har. resp. 7.14; pro Caec. 26.74) in order to reconstruct the text of XII Tab. 6.3 and to ascertain his substantial meaning. The basic idea of the author is that the ancient wording of this provision ( usus auctoritas fundi biennium esto; ceterarum rerum annus) refers to an institution (usus auctoritas) which performed in the law of evidence, apart from special exceptions, the function of the later usucapio.
Influence of diseases on the wild eel stock: The case of Albufera Lake
2009
Abstract In recent years, eel stocks in the European Union have declined dramatically. This decline has been attributed to habitat loss, over fishing, and more recently, pathogens, but little data exist on bacterial diseases of wild eels. This study reports on the bacterial and parasitic diseases affecting the wild-eel population of the Albufera Lake. Over a 3-year period, 122 eels were analysed after having been randomly chosen from those caught in the lagoon via traditional fishing procedures. This collection of individuals comprised eels at different growth stages as well as some individuals showing pathological signs, such as haemorrhagic fins, petechiae on the belly and ulcers. Microbi…
Seasonal Variation of Ralstonia solanacearum Biovar 2 Populations in a Spanish River: Recovery of Stressed Cells at Low Temperatures
2005
ABSTRACT The presence of Ralstonia solanacearum biovar 2 in the watercourses of European countries is increasing, but little is known about its ecology in aquatic habitats. The detection of this pathogen in 2000 in one Spanish river led us to study its population density at different locations on the river over a period of 3 years. During 2000 and 2001, the pathogen was recovered at low densities (10 to 80 CFU/ml) by direct plating on modified SMSA agar from water samples at 14°C or higher, but its isolation was usually unsuccessful at temperatures below 9°C. To monitor the pathogen's abundance in winter, we used two liquid selective media for enrichment (at 29 and 35°C) and compared them b…
European Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) immune status and disease resistance are impaired by arginine dietary supplementation
2015
Infectious diseases and fish feeds management are probably the major expenses in the aquaculture business. Hence, it is a priority to define sustainable strategies which simultaneously avoid therapeutic procedures and reinforce fish immunity. Currently, one preferred approach is the use of immunostimulants which can be supplemented to the fish diets. Arginine is a versatile amino acid with important mechanisms closely related to the immune response. Aiming at finding out how arginine affects the innate immune status or improve disease resistance of European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) against vibriosis, fish were fed two arginine-supplemented diets (1% and 2% arginine supplementation). A…
Differential involvement of mussel hemocyte sub-populations in the clearance of bacteria.
2008
Abstract Mussels are filter-feeders living in a bacteria-rich environment. We have previously found that numerous bacterial species are naturally present within the cell-free hemolymph, including several of the Vibrio genus, whereas the intra-cellular content of hemocytes was sterile. When bacteria were injected into the circulation of the mussel, the number of living intra-hemocyte bacteria dramatically increased in less than an hour, suggesting intense phagocytosis, then gradually decreased, with no viable bacteria remaining 12 h post-injection for Micrococcus lysodeikticus, 24 h for Vibrio splendidus and more than 48 h for V ibrio anguillarum. The total hemocyte count (THC) was dramatica…
