Attitudini tecnologiche di batteri lattici starter per la fermentazione di olive verdi da mensa

2009

The main characteristics for lactic acid bacteria to be used as starter cultures for table olive production include the capacity to grow in presence of high concentrations of sodium chloride (NaCl) and phenols and at low temperatures. These bacteria have to show a homolactic fermentation for carbohydrates and the ability for a rapid acidification of brines. Other important traits for strain selection are represented by the expression of β-glucosidase enzymes, antimicrobial substances and flavoring metabolites. Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus pentosus are frequently employed as starter for table olives. Recently, lactobacilli/enterococci mixed starter cultures have been used for th…

Shaping the antipredator strategy: flexibility, consistency, and behavioral correlations under varying predation threat

2014

9 pages; International audience; Recent ecological and evolutionary research emphasizes the importance of adaptive trait integration. For instance, antipredator defenses are built up of several morphological and behavioral components in many species, yet their functional relationships are still poorly documented. Using field-collected freshwater crustaceans Gammarus fossarum in a within-subject design, we investigated the flexibility and consistency of refuge use, photophobia, and exploration behavior as well as their associations, quantified both when predation risk was absent or artificially simulated. In agreement with the "threat-sensitivity" hypothesis, both refuge use and photophobia …

Green Composites Based on Hedysarum coronarium with Outstanding FDM Printability and Mechanical Performance

2022

The addition of natural scraps to biodegradable polymers has gained particular interest in recent years, allowing reducing environmental pollution related to traditional plastic. In this work, new composites were fabricated by adding 10% or 20% of Hedysarum coronarium (HC) flour to Poly (lactic acid) (PLA). The two formulations were first produced by twin screw extrusion and the obtained filaments were then employed for the fabrication of composites, either for compression molding (CM) or by fused deposition modeling (FDM), and characterized from a morphological and mechanical point of view. Through FDM it was possible to achieve dense structures with good wettability of the filler that, on…

Fungal root endophyte associations of plants endemic to the Pamir Alay Mountains of Central Asia.

2011

The fungal root endophyte associations of 16 species from 12 families of plants endemic to the Pamir Alay Mountains of Central Asia are presented. The plants and soil samples were collected in Zeravshan and Hissar ranges within the central Pamir Alay mountain system. Colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) was found in 15 plant species; in 8 species it was of the Arum type and in 4 of the Paris type, while 3 taxa revealed intermediate arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) morphology. AMF colonization was found to be absent only in Matthiola integrifolia, the representative of the Brassicaceae family. The AM status and morphology are reported for the first time for all the species analyzed a…

First record of Icerya seychellarum and confirmed occurrence of Aulacaspis tubercularis (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha) in Italy

2020

The Seychelles scale, Icerya seychellarum (Westwood, 1855) (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Monophlebidae), is reported for the first time in Italy. Moreover, the occurrence of the white mango scale, Aulacaspis tubercularis (Newstead, 1906) (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Diaspididae), firstly reported in 1990 on mango trees growing outdoors in a nursery near Milazzo (Messina province, Sicily), and then intercepted in 2013 on mango plants imported from Florida (USA) to the Botanical Garden in Padova (Italy), is confirmed. Both species were found in two Sicilian mango orchards located in the province of Messina. Their introduction is most likely due to the orchards planting using infested mango nursery pla…

Transport of Sugars and Sugar Alcohols by Lactic Acid Bacteria

2008

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) play an important role in the fermentation of beverages like wine and beer, and in the production of dairy products, sour dough, sausages and cheese. The knowledge of the genome sequence offers an insight into the metabolism of the bacteria and provides means to optimize the manufacturing of the products. By now genomes of several lactic acid bacteria are sequenced, including wine related bacteria Oenococcus oeni PSU-1, Pediococcus pentosaceus ATCC 25745, Leuconostoc mesenteroides ATCC 8293 (http://www.jgi.doe.gov/; Klaenhammer et al. 2002; Mills et al. 2005) and Lactobacillus plantarum WCFS1 (http://www.cmbi. ru.nl/plantarum/; http://www.lacplantcyc.nl/; Kleerebe…

Effect of starvation on parasite-induced mortality in a freshwater snail (Potamopyrgus antipodarum).

1999

The level of host exploitation is expected, under theory, to be selected to maximise (subject to constraints) the lifetime reproductive success of the parasite. Here we studied the effect of two castrating trematode species on their intermediate snail host, Potamopyrgus antipodarum. One of the trematode species, Microphallus sp., encysts in the snail host and the encysted larvae “hatch” following ingestion of infected snails by birds. The other species, Notocotylus gippyensis, by contrast, releases swimming larvae; ingestion of the snail host is not required for, and does not aid, transmission to the final host. We isolated field-collected snails for 3 months in the laboratory, and followed…

Yeast-Bacteria Coinoculation

2019

Abstract Yeasts and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) coinoculation is the simultaneous, or close in time inoculation, of both types of microorganisms in winemaking. Coinoculation has been used mainly to early accomplish malolactic fermentation (MLF), employing generally the couples Oenococcus oeni/Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Lactobacillus plantarum/S. cerevisiae. Early completion of MLF decreases the overall vinification time, reduces the microbial spoilage risk, and even prevents the biogenic amines synthesis. LAB/yeasts coinoculation could be also used to increase the acidity of wines when inoculated in grape must, using sugar to synthesize lactic acid and producing ethanol diminution. Coinocu…

A polyphasic approach in order to identify dominant lactic acid bacteria during pasta manufacturing

2010

Using a polyphasic approach, we have isolated and identified, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in samples directly collected from an artisanal pasta-making manufactory located in Puglia (South Italy). Samples were collected during several steps of pasta processing and LAB were isolated on MRS and M17 plates. Furthermore, strains were grouped in a total of eight species by means of randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD)-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) typing and 16S rDNA sequencing. The majority of strains were identified as belonging to Pediococcus pentosaceus and Enterococcus faecium species. The remaining strains were characterized and assigned to Weissella confusa, Pediococcus acidilactici,…
