Antiprotozoal and cysteine proteases inhibitory activity of dipeptidyl enoates
2018
A family of dipeptidyl enoates has been prepared and tested against the parasitic cysteine proteases rhodesain, cruzain and falcipain-2 related to sleeping sickness, Chagas disease and malaria, respectively. They have also been tested against human cathepsins B and L1 for selectivity. Dipeptidyl enoates resulted to be irreversible inhibitors of these enzymes. Some of the members of the family are very potent inhibitors of parasitic cysteine proteases displaying k2nd (M−1s−1) values of seven orders of magnitude. In vivo antiprotozoal testing was also performed. Inhibitors exhibited IC50 values in the micromolar range against Plasmodium falciparum, Trypanosoma brucei, Trypanosoma cruzi and ev…
Use of Botanicals to Suppress Different Stages of the Life Cycle of Fusarium graminearum
2019
Fusarium head blight (FHB) is one of the most important cereal diseases worldwide, causing yield losses and contamination of harvested products with mycotoxins. Fusarium graminearum is one of the most common FHB-causing species in wheat and barley cropping systems. We assessed the ability of different botanical extracts to suppress essential stages of the fungal life cycle using three strains of F. graminearum (FG0410, FG2113, and FG1145). The botanicals included aqueous extracts from white mustard (Sinapis alba) seed flour (Pure Yellow Mustard [PYM] and Tillecur [Ti]) as well as milled Chinese galls (CG). At 2% concentration (wt/vol), PYM and Ti completely inhibited growth of mycelium of …

Visiting Friends and Relatives (VFRs) travelers and imported malaria in the Palermo district (Sicily).
2014
Abstract Introduction. Although Italy has been malaria-free since 1970, the infection is commonly introduced into the country by travelers and immigrants from endemic areas. The term VFRs refers to immigrants from malaria-endemic countries who are regularly resident in a malaria-free area, and who travel to their countries of origin to visit friends and relatives (VFRs). This group is at special risk of malaria as they are unaware of having lost their transitory immunity to the disease. Methods. We conducted a retrospective study at the International Travelers Department of Palermo (Italy), examining records of malaria cases (67) reported over the period from 1998 to 2013. Results. VFRs rep…
Metoclopramide and diphenhydramine in the treatment of hyperemesis gravidarum: effectiveness and predictors of rehospitalisation.
2007
Abstract Objectives Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is the second most common reason for hospitalisation during pregnancy. Since 2002, a new HG treatment protocol consisting of metoclopramide plus diphenhydramine was put in place at CHU Sainte-Justine, affiliated to University of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effectiveness of this new HG protocol regarding length of hospitalisation for HG, rate of rehospitalisation, evolution of nausea and vomiting symptoms, and rate of adverse events. Study design A retrospective cohort study was conducted from 2002 to 2006 on the population of pregnant women diagnosed with HG, and treated at CHU Sainte-Justine wit…
PLASMODIUM DOMINAN DALAM NYAMUK ANOPHELES BETINA (Anopheles spp.) PADA BEBERAPA TEMPAT DI DISTRIK MANOKWARI BARAT
2018
Malaria contagious by mosquito Anopheles Betina bringing protozoa parasite in its body (Plasmodium). Plasmodium there are four specieses that is Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale, Plasmodium malariae and Plasmodium falciparum, but often becomes pathogen that is Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum. As for intention of this research is to identify Plasmodium which is dominant at female Anopheles mosquito (Anopheles spp.) and knows distribution pattern of female Anopheles mosquito (Anopheles spp.) in some places in Districts Manokwari Barat.
Based on research result done to four locations that is area Amban, Wosi, Sanggeng and Kota is found [by] 1024 mosquito tails. From the amou…
An adventive Panaeolus antillarum in Poland (Basidiomycota, Agaricales) with notes on its taxonomy, geographical distribution, and ecology
2014
Abstract Coprophilous fungus, Panaeolus antillarum rarely recorded in Europe, is reported here for the first time from the Augustow Plane, north-eastern Poland. This thermophilic species was found outdoors in August on horse dung mixed with straw. A chemical analysis did not confirm the presence of the psychoactive alkaloids in collected material. A complete description and illustration of the species based on Polish specimens are presented and notes on its taxonomy, ecology, world distribution and comparison with similar taxa — P. semiovatus var. semiovatus, P. semiovatus var. phalaenarum, and others are also provided.
Evaluation of biological and antimicrobial properties of freeze-dried whey fermented by different strains ofLactobacillus plantarum
2018
The aim of this study was to evaluate the biological and antimicrobial activities of commercial freeze-dried whey fermented by lactic acid bacteria in order to valorize this high polluting liquid waste of the dairy industry. Freeze-dried whey was fermented by different strains of Lactobacillus plantarum (CECT 220, 221, 748) at three different times of fermentation (24, 48, 72 h). Afterwards, the extract was purified on centricon amicon with a cut-off of 3 kDa to obtain a permeate consisting of small bioactive compounds reported in the literature to show greater bioactivity. The purified and diluted samples were subjected to the biological and antimicrobial tests for the evaluation of antiox…
Whey fermented by using Lactobacillus plantarum strains: A promising approach to increase the shelf life of pita bread
2019
Nowadays, there is an increasing concern regarding the shelf life of food products, leading producers to research natural antimicrobial agents to use in food preparation. In this study, we evaluated the antifungal activity of Lactobacillus plantarum fermented whey and then added the whey during preparation of pita bread to study shelf-life improvement. The fermented whey showed a satisfactory inhibitory (antifungal) effect against Penicillium expansum and Penicillium brevicompactum strains: the minimum inhibitory and minimum fungicidal concentrations ranged from 3.9 to 39.0 g/L and from 62.5 to 250 g/L, respectively. Addition of fermented whey increased the shelf life of the pita bread. Aft…
Gamma delta T cells inhibit in vitro growth of the asexual blood stages of Plasmodium falciparum by a granule exocytosis-dependent cytotoxic pathway …
2004
Several reports have stated the ability of gamma delta T cells to inhibit the growth of the asexual blood stages of Plasmodium falciparum in vitro. However, little information is available about the mechanisms involved. In this study, in vitro systems were used to study the role of the granule exocytosis-dependent cytotoxic pathway in the growth inhibition/killing of P. falciparum by human gamma delta T cells. Our results show that the inhibition requires cell-to-cell contact and that gamma delta T cells kill the asexual blood stages of P. falciparum through a granule exocytosis-dependent cytotoxic pathway after recognition of certain ligands or molecules expressed on the surface of infecte…
