Tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-1beta, interleukin-6, and transforming growth factor-beta are cytokines synthesized by alveolar macrophages. We investigated the effect of sulfur dioxide, a major air pollutant, on the production of these cytokines by alveolar macrophages. The cells were layered on a polycarbonate membrane and exposed for 30 min to 0.0, 1.0, 2.5, and 5.0 ppm sulfur dioxide at 37 degrees C and 100% air humidity. The cells were incubated for 24 h after exposure, thus allowing cytokine release. Cytotoxic effects of sulfur dioxide were evaluated by trypan blue exclusion. In order to investigate whether unilateral testicular torsion exerts a negative influence on the previously undisturbed contralateral side, exocrine and endocrine testicular function were evaluated before and two months after torsion. A rat model with 6 hours', 12 hours' or permanent extravaginal 540 degrees torsion of the right testis was used; a sham operated group of animals served as controls. Ejaculates were collected by electrostimulation; LH, FSH and testosterone serum levels were determined by radioimmunoassays. Nuclear envelopes contain a nucleoside triphosphatase which is thought to be involved in the supply of energy for nucleo-cytoplasmic RNA transport. This enzyme is stimulated most efficiently by poly(A) and to a lesser extent by poly(G) and poly(dT). Half-maximal stimulation of the enzyme from rat liver nuclei, which was associated with the poly(A)-specific endoribonuclease IV and was free from poly(A) polymerase and endoribonuclease V activity, was determined to occur at a concentration of 1.1 × 106 poly(A) molecules/nuclear ghost. In this paper we have analysed the behaviour of myelodysplastic marrow in a long-term bone marrow liquid culture system (LTBMC) from eleven patients with myelodysplastic syndromes with regard to cellularity, day-7 and day-14 CFU-GM growth, cluster formation, adherent cells and CFU-F formation. An altered CFU-GM pattern was found in 64% of cases at diagnosis, while normal growth was seen in the remaining cases, all of which were affected by refractory anaemia. The levels of CFU-GM, as well as cellularity, were reduced in myelodysplastic marrows compared to normal controls over the whole duration of LTBMCs. Objectives: To explore the correlation between the severity of radiotherapy-induced glossitis (RTG) and endothelial cell injury in local tissues in a rat model. Study Design: The RTG animal model was designed and used by our team. The Oral mucositis index(OMI) was documented daily. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) Staining of CD34 was utilized to identify endothelial cells in the RTG tissues. Apoptosis of endothelial cells in local lesions due to RTG was detected by the TUNEL assay. Abstract A protein capture assay was used to measure 14-3-3 (γ-isoform) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with either variant or sporadic Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (CJD). The results were compared with those obtained using Western blotting. Elevated levels of 14-3-3γ were found in 58% of variant CJD (vCJD) patients and 82% of sporadic CJD (spCJD) patients using the protein capture assay. Using a Western blotting technique, the presence of CSF 14-3-3γ was detected in 58% of vCJD patients and in 89% of spCJD patients.
