Gender Confirmation Surgery: Guiding Principles

2016

Abstract Background At this time, no formal training or educational programs exist for surgeons or surgery residents interested in performing gender confirmation surgeries. Aim To propose guiding principles designed to aid with the development of formal surgical training programs focused on gender confirmation surgery. Methods We use expert opinion to provide a “first of its kind” framework for training surgeons to care for transgender and gender nonconforming individuals. Outcomes We describe a multidisciplinary treatment model that describes an educational philosophy and the institution of quality parameters. Results This article represents the first step in the development of a structure…

Genome-wide significant association between alcohol dependence and a variant in the ADH gene cluster

2011

Alcohol dependence (AD) is an important contributory factor to the global burden of disease. The etiology of AD involves both environmental and genetic factors, and the disorder has a heritability of around 50%. The aim of the present study was to identify susceptibility genes for AD by performing a genome-wide association study (GWAS). The sample comprised 1333 male in-patients with severe AD according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition, and 2168 controls. These included 487 patients and 1358 controls from a previous GWAS study by our group. All individuals were of German descent. Single-marker tests and a polygenic score-based analysis to assess the …

Formation de molécules dans des gaz atomiques ultra-froids par des champs quasi-résonnants

2010

We study the nonlinear mean-field dynamics of diatomic molecule formation at coherent photo- and magneto-association of ultracold atoms focusing on the case when the system is initially in the all-atomic state. We show that in the limit of strongly nonlinear interaction between an ultra-cold atomic-molecular system and a quasi-resonant electromagnetic field, the molecule formation process, depending on the characteristics of the associating field, may evolve according two different scenarios, namely, weak- and strong-oscillatory regimes. In the first case the number of molecules increases without pronounced oscillations of atom-molecule populations, while in the second case high-amplitude R…

Control of photoassociation of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates by laser field configuration

2016

In this work we show that it is to perform an efficient adiabatic passage in a basic quadratic-nonlinear quantum two-state system describing weakly bound molecule formation in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates through photoassociation by laser fields. An efficient adiabatic transfer is also possible if the third-order nonlinearities describing the atom-atom, atom-molecule, and molecule-molecule elastic scattering are taken into account. The transfer is achieved by choosing a proper detuning derived by solving the inverse problem. We also show that one can perform a stimulated Raman exact tracking in a quadratic-nonlinear quantum three-state system. The irreversible losses from the intermediate…

Making Telescopes and Partying with the Stars: Amateur Astronomy in Spain during Franco’s Dictatorship

2016

Franco’s dictatorship was characterized by an official narrative that criminalized the liberal tradition of previous periods. Such a discourse defined an ideologically correct science that censured the subordination of Spanish science to foreign influence and sought to create a new scientific tradition. However, recent studies have revised these aims and suggest that there was a continuity of scientific and technological programmes and practices before and after the Spanish Civil War. This paper contributes to these investigations with further evidence, focusing on several practices that characterized the development of amateur astronomy during this period. Special attention is paid to the…

Quantifying the contamination by old main-sequence stars in young moving groups: the case of the Local Association

2009

The associations and moving groups of young stars are excellent laboratories for investigating stellar formation in the solar neighborhood. Previous results have confirmed that a non-negligible fraction of old main-sequence stars is present in the lists of possible members of young stellar kinematic groups. A detailed study of the properties of these samples is needed to separate the young stars from old main-sequence stars with similar space motion, and identify the origin of these structures. We used stars possible members of the young (~ 10 - 650 Myr) moving groups from the literature. To determine the age of the stars, we used several suitable age indicators for young main sequence star…

Search for newπ0-like particles produced in association with aτ-lepton pair

2014

We report on a search in e^+e^− annihilations for new π^0-like particles produced in association with a τ-lepton pair. These objects, with a similar mass and similar decay modes to π^0 mesons, could provide an explanation for the non-asymptotic behavior of the pion-photon transition form factor observed by the BABAR Collaboration. No significant signal is observed, and limits on the production cross section at the level of 73 fb or 370 fb, depending on the model parameters, are determined at 90% confidence level. These upper limits lie below the cross section values needed to explain the BABAR form factor data.

ROSAT PSPC/HRI observations of the open cluster NGC 2422

2002

We present the results of a ROSAT study of NGC 2422, a southern open cluster at a distance of about 470 pc, with an age close to the Pleiades. Source detection was performed on two observations, a 10-ks PSPC and a 40-ks HRI pointing, with a detection algorithm based on wavelet transforms, particularly suited to detecting faint sources in crowded fields. We have detected 78 sources, 13 of which were detected only with the HRI, and 37 detected only with the PSPC. For each source, we have computed the 0.2-2.0 keV X-ray flux. Using optical data from the literature and our own low-dispersion spectroscopic observations, we find candidate optical counterparts for 62 X-ray sources, with more than 8…

The Gaia-ESO Survey: Catalogue of Hα emission stars

2015

We discuss the properties of Hα emission stars across the sample of 22035 spectra from the Gaia-ESO Survey internal data release, observed with the GIRAFFE instrument and largely belonging to stars in young open clusters. Automated fits using two independent Gaussian profiles and a third component that accounts for the nebular emission allow us to discern distinct morphological types of Hα line profiles with the introduction of a simplified classification scheme. All in all, we find 3765 stars with intrinsic emission and sort their spectra into eight distinct morphological categories: single-component emission, emission blend, sharp emission peaks, double emission, P-Cygni, inverted P-Cygni…

X-ray spectral and timing characteristics of the stars in the young open cluster IC 2391

2005

We present X-ray spectral and timing analysis of members of the young open cluster IC 2391 observed with the XMM-Newton observatory. We detected 99 X-ray sources by analysing the summed data obtained from MOS1, MOS2 and pn detectors of the EPIC camera; 24 of them are members, or probable members, of the cluster. Stars of all spectral types have been detected, from the early-types to the late-M dwarfs. Despite the capability of the instrument to recognize up to 3 thermal components, the X-ray spectra of the G, K and M members of the cluster are well described with two thermal components (at kT$_1 \sim$ 0.3-0.5 keV and kT$_2 \sim$ 1.0-1.2 keV respectively) while the X-ray spectra of F members…
