Abstract Explicit measures assess introspectively accessible self-descriptions and evaluations. In contrast, implicit measures assess introspectively inaccessible processes that operate outside of awareness. Consequently, implicit measures should be free of response factors such as faking tendencies and social desirability (SD). Usually, correlations between implicit and explicit measures of the same construct tend to be low. Study 1 (N=145) tested the hypothesis that SD should moderate the relationship between an implicit (the Implicit Association Test) and an explicit (a standard questionnaire) anxiety measure. This paper aims at investigating the semantic value of the verb μαίνομαι “to rage, to be furious” in Homeric Greek, in order to clarify the striking semantic relationship between the common ‘irrational’ meaning of the verb and the original ‘rational’ meaning of the Indo-European root *men- “to think”, to which the verb traces back. The corresponding words for μαίνομαι in other Indo-European languages (e.g. OInd. mányatē; Av. mainyeite; OIr. (do)moiniur; OCS mъnjo; Lit. miniu) can be translated as “to think”, thus showing an opposite meaning. The molecular association between some substituted β-carbolines and a model flavin, lumiflavin, has been studied by means of a semiempirical approach proposed by Fraga based on a 1/R expansion of atom-atom pair potentials. Only stacked minima have been considered because of their possible biological interest. The calculations characterize 15 different minimum stacked conformations, most of them occurring in the complexes considered. The structural and energetic effects of 1–Me, 6–OH and 7–OH substituents of β-carboline are discussed. Does hospital competition harm equity? Evidence from the English National Health Service

Increasing evidence shows that hospital competition under fixed prices can improve quality and reduce cost. Concerns remain, however, that competition may undermine socio-economic equity in the utilisation of care. We test this hypothesis in the context of the pro-competition reforms of the English National Health Service progressively introduced from 2004 to 2006. We use a panel of 32,482 English small areas followed from 2003 to 2008 and a difference in differences approach. The effect of competition on equity is identified by the interaction between market structure, small area income deprivation and year. This study shows two different dimensional types of maternal depression, one dull and slow, the other stressed and irritable. When the quality of the infant attachment to mother is assessed, it is noted that the dimensional aspect of the maternal depression can be of some importance in the quality of the attachment. In fact, children are more inclined to develop an insecure–ambivalent attachment to their stressed depressed mothers, while children of slow depressed mothers are more insecure–avoiding.
