In chronic diseases, a correct diagnosis and access to the most appropriate treatments are not sufficient to ensure an improved clinical condition. The patient’s compliance with a treatment regimen is a crucial, though often neglected step for achieving and maintaining over time outcomes that would otherwise be unattainable, first of all the disease control. Asthma is a multifactorial condition and, for this reason, its poor management might cause an altered quality of life and a significant increase in healthcare costs. New technologies offer valuable support to both patients and healthcare workers, allowing for therapeutic monitoring and ongoing assistance.

Patients with severe persistent asthma represent the highest unmet medical need among the asthmatic population. To improve the understanding of underlying mechanisms and disease progression the German Asthma Net (GAN, www.german-asthma-net.de) launched a Severe Asthma Registry in December 2011. Enrolled patients undergo detailed clinical and physiologic evaluations, including patients’ medical history, allergy and lung function tests, blood analyses as well as past and concomitant medication and comorbidities. Introduction: The impact of a history of competitive sports on later smoking behavior and occurrence of chronic pulmonary diseases is poorly known. We investigated how a history of elite level sports predicted later pulmonary disease morbidity and mortality.
