Innovationsschübe durch Außenseiter: Das Beispiel des Amateur-Astronomen William Herschel

1986

Innovatory advances by outsiders: The example of the amateur astronomer William Herschel. — Every scientific experience and perception has been gained from within a particular historical situation constituted by numerous components, both internal and external to a particular science, called praesentabilia (Prasentabilien). They enable and determine the scope and the experiental pale of any given science as well as its way and method of acquiring experience and knowledge. The interaction of such praesentabilia forms, what may be called the Historische Erfahrungsraum (‘historical field of experience’), which each individual and/or (greater/smaller) group shares in respectively. A scientific (…

Ernst Julius Öpik’s (1916) note on the theory of explosion cratering onthe Moon’s surface—The complex case of a long-overlooked benchmark paper

2014

High-velocity impact as a common phenomenon in planetary evolution was ignored until well into the twentieth century, mostly because of inadequate understanding of cratering processes. An eight-page note, published in Russian by the young Ernst Julius Opik, a great Estonian astronomer, was among the key selenological papers, but due to the language barrier, it was barely known and mostly incorrectly cited. This particular paper is here intended to serve as an explanatory supplement to an English translation of Opik's article, but also to document an early stage in our understanding of cratering. First, we outline the historical–biographical background of this benchmark paper, and second, a …

Panel Discussion: Systems for Data Analysis What they AEE; what they Could be?

1985

CRANE: I’d like to pose a couple of questions: (1) Command Languages — A tool for the astronomer or for the programmer? (2) Portability — Holy Cow or Red Herring? I propose that we start with the first one and see how far we get. If we don’t get past that, fine. If we get on to the question of portability, this is also fine. Let me just open up the discussion by asking Rudi Albrecht to make a comment.
