The amateur astronomer Anders Hellant and the plight of his observations of the transits of Venus in Tornio, 1761 and 1769

Anders Hellant was a versatile Swedish amateur scientist whose figure dominated eighteenth century intellectual life in Tornio, his little home town of some 500 inhabitants at the mouth of the Tornio river. My study is mainly based on the biographies published in Finnish (Bostr¨om 1918) and in Swedish (Tob´e 1991) but I have also consulted some original sources in Paris and in Stockholm. Hellant incarnated almost all by himself the inquiring scientific spirit of the Age of Enlightenment in Swedish Lapland. There is much to be said about his life and works, but here I focus on his observations of the Venus passages in 1761 and 1769. peerReviewed

The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing

The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) was studied within ESA M3 Cosmic Vision framework and participated in the final down-selection for a launch slot in 2022-2024. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument, LOFT will study the behaviour of matter under extreme conditions, such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions of accretion flows close to black holes and neutron stars, and the supra-nuclear densities in the interior of neutron stars. Tutkielmani tarkoituksena on osoittaa, kuinka ruokakirjat osaltaan aktiivisesti luovat ja toisintavat käsitystämme luokasta ja sukupuolesta. Tutkielmassani jaottelen ruokakirjallisuuden gastronomiseen kirjallisuuteen ja keittokirjallisuuteen. Gastronominen kirjallisuus on perinteisesti ollut miehisen eliitin laji. Arkiseen käytännöllisyyteen keskittyvät keittokirjat ovat puolestaan olleet naisten kirjallisuutta. Ruoan ja luokan yhteydessä keskeisenä teoreettisena kehyksenä toimivat Pierre Bourdieun ajatukset mausta ja luokasta sekä kulttuurisesta ja ekonomisesta pääomasta. Ruokaa ja sukupuolta puolestaan pohdin sekä ruoka-aineiden että ruoanvalmistuksen sukupuolittuneisuuden kautta. Tapause…

International audience; Comme tous les mots courants, le terme de gastronomie est frappé d’évidence, car chacun s’en fait une idée selon son imaginaire et son expérience, mais peine à s’enfermer dans une définition univoque et partagée. On reconnaît volontiers à la gastronomie, la valeur d’attention portée au boire et au manger, avec un soin particulier pour les moments de vie ainsi cultivés. Pas nécessairement le luxe des moyens mais celui du désir de bien faire. Pas nécessairement une gastronomie mais des gastronomies, au risque d’en dissoudre le sens dans la pluralité des pratiques. Quelle consistance donner alors au terme si la diversité fait loi ?
