Experiments on optical fiber interferometers and laser modes

1992

Three experiments on optical fiber interferometers, suitable for a teaching laboratory, are described. The guiding characteristics of single mode optical fibers enable simple interferometry experiments with large path differences to be carried out easily. These experiments show that the fringe visibility exhibits a periodic dependence on the path difference when using a multilongitudinal mode HeNe laser. A simple model can be used to explain this dependence in terms of the mode spectrum of the laser.

Resonant Nuclear Fusion Processes and the Gamma Rays of SS 433

1984

Gamma-ray spectral lines have recently been reported coming from the celestial object SS 433, which is known to emit high-speed jets in opposite directions. The proposed identification of the lines as coming from fusion reactions on nitrogen nuclei as part of the carbon-nitrogen-oxygen cycle operating in the jets has now received observational support. Predictions of strengths and widths of additional lines which, if seen, would provide valuable new information about conditions giving rise to the jets are presented.

Unambiguous phase retrieval in fiber-based interferometers

2020

A scheme for fiber interferometers, exploiting frequency-multiplexing in orthogonal fiber polarization modes, enables unambiguous phase retrieval. This allows for arbitrary phase tuning, providing a precise tool for time-bin qubit manipulation.

COS B observation of high-energy γ radiation from 3C273

1978

THE discovery of a high-energy γ-ray source at α(1950) = 12h 29 min±6 min, δ(1950)= +3°±1.5° is reported here. Arguments are given for the identification with 3C273. If this identification is correct, the γ-ray luminosity of 3C273 in the energy range 50–500 MeV is 2×1046 erg s−1 for H0 = 60 km s−1 Mpc−1.

The X-ray gas scintillation spectrometer experiment on the first spacelab flight

1985

The First Spacelab mission, launched on Space ShuttleFlight STS-9 in November 1983 carried a multidisciplinary payload which was intended to demonstrate that valuable scientific results can be achieved from such short duration missions. The payload complement included a spectrometer to undertake observations of the brighter cosmic X-ray sources. The primary scientific objectives of this experiment were the study of detailed spectral features in cosmic X-ray sources and their associated temporal variations over a wide energy range from about 2 up to 30 keV. The instrument based on the gas scintillation proportional counter had an effective area of some 180 cm2 with an energy resolution of ∼9…

2015

Advanced Astronomy for Heliophysics Plus (ADAHELI+) is a project concept for a small solar and space weather mission with a budget compatible with an European Space Agency (ESA) S-class mission, including launch, and a fast development cycle. ADAHELI+ was submitted to the European Space Agency by a European-wide consortium of solar physics research institutes in response to the "Call for a small mission opportunity for a launch in 2017," of March 9, 2012. The ADAHELI+ project builds on the heritage of the former ADAHELI mission, which had successfully completed its phase-A study under the Italian Space Agency 2007 Small Mission Programme, thus proving the soundness and feasibility of its in…

Many-electron transport in Aharonov-Bohm interferometers: Time-dependent density-functional study

2012

We apply time-dependent density-functional theory to study many-electron transport in Aharonov-Bohm interferometers in a non-equilibrium situation. The conductance properties in the system are complex and depend on the enclosed magnetic flux in the interferometer, the number of interacting particles, and the mutual distance of the transport channels at the points of encounter. Generally, the electron-electron interactions do not suppress the visibility of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations if the interchannel distance -- determined by the positioning of the incompressible strips through the external magnetic field -- is optimized. However, the interactions also impose an interesting Aharonov-Bohm p…

Auvby? survey for Ca II emission stars

1990

During the last two years auvbyβ photometric survey of 85 Ca II emission stars from the Mount Wilson program on stellar activity has been carried out at the Calar Alto Observatory (Almeria, Spain). We present preliminary results for theuvby and β calibrations. Some stars displaying anomalousc1 andm1 indices, with photometric or spectroscopic data from previous studies, are reported. A reddening study for the complete sample is given.

Carbon coatings for soft-x-ray reflectivity enhancement

2007

In X-ray astronomical telescopes, the focalization of the radiation is achieved by means of grazing incidence Wolter I (parabola + hyperbola) optics in total reflection regime. In general, high density materials (e.g. Au, Pt, Ir, W) are used as reflecting coatings, in order to increase as much as possible the cut-off angles and energies for total reflection. However these materials present an important reduction of the reflectivity between 0.2 and 5 keV, due to the photoabsorption, and this phenomenon is particularly enhanced in correspondence of the M absorption edges (between 2 and 3.5 keV). In general, this determines a strong decrease of the telescope effective area. To overcome the pro…

Bidirectional Nonorthogonal Schardin-Lau Interferometer

1990

We discuss the formation of self-images of a 2-D grating composed by two rulings of equal period, but in-plane rotated. We describe the in-register condition for setting the lensless Lau effect, with this type of gratings; and we propose to use the above configuration for interferometrically visualizing, in noncoherent light, phase structures, in two nonorthogonal directions.
