Red-green vs. blue-yellow spatio-temporal contrast sensitivity across the visual field
2011
We measured contrast sensitivity (CS) to sinusoidal spatio-temporal patterns isolating the red-green and blue-yellow mechanisms, at 21 locations in the visual field (including the fovea). These measurements complete the available data for the red-green mechanism at fovea and for both mechanisms outside fovea with non-stationary patterns. Chromatic detection surfaces are low-pass at fovea and CS decreases with eccentricity at a rate that depends on the spatial and temporal frequencies. Our results confirm that, in general, sensitivities decrease with eccentricity at different rates for stationary red-green and blue-yellow patterns at each point of the spatio-temporal domain and that the chro…
Widespread Nanoflare Variability Detected with Hinode/X-Ray Telescope in a Solar Active Region
2011
It is generally agreed that small impulsive energy bursts called nanoflares are responsible for at least some of the Sun's hot corona, but whether they are the explanation for most of the multimillion-degree plasma has been a matter of ongoing debate. We present here evidence that nanoflares are widespread in an active region observed by the X-Ray Telescope on board the Hinode mission. The distributions of intensity fluctuations have small but important asymmetries, whether taken from individual pixels, multipixel subregions, or the entire active region. Negative fluctuations (corresponding to reduced intensity) are greater in number but weaker in amplitude, so that the median fluctuation i…
A relativistically broadened iron line from an Accreting Millisecond Pulsar
2010
The capabilities of XMM-Newton have been fully exploited to detect a broadened iron Kα emission line from the 2.5 ms Accreting Millisecond Pulsar, SAX J1808.4-3658. The energy of the transition is compatible with fluorescence from neutral/lowly ionized iron. The observed large width (FWHM more than 1 keV) can be explained through Doppler and relativistic broadening from the inner rings of an accretion disc close to the NS. From a fit of the line shape with a diskline model we obtain an estimate of the inner disc radius of 18.0-5.6+7.6km for a 1.4 M⊙ neutron star. The disc is therefore truncated inside the corotation radius (31 km for SAX J1808.4-3658), in agreement with the observation of c…
Detection of X-ray Resonance Scattering in Active Stellar Coronae
2004
An analysis of Lyman series lines arising from hydrogen-like oxygen and neon ions in the coronae of the active RS CVn-type binaries II Peg and IM Peg, observed using the {\it Chandra} High Resolution Transmission Grating Spectrograph, shows significant decrements in the Ly$\alpha$/Ly$\beta$ ratios as compared with theoretical predictions and with the same ratios observed in similar active binaries. We interpret these decrements in terms of resonance scattering of line photons out of the line-of-sight; these observations present the first strong evidence for this effect in active stellar coronae. The net line photon loss implies a non-uniform and asymmetric surface distribution of emitting s…
Timing of the Accreting Millisecond Pulsar XTE J1814-338
2006
We present a precise timing analysis of the accreting millisecond pulsar XTE J1814-338 during its 2003 outburst, observed by RXTE. A full orbital solution is given for the first time; Doppler effects induced by the motion of the source in the binary system were corrected, leading to a refined estimate of the orbital period, P_orb=15388.7229(2)s, and of the projected semimajor axis, a sini/c= 390.633(9) lt-ms. We could then investigate the spin behaviour of the accreting compact object during the outburst. We report here a refined value of the spin frequency (nu=314.35610879(1) Hz) and the first estimate of the spin frequency derivative of this source while accreting (nu^dot=(-6.7 +/- 0.7) 1…
Optical spectroscopy of X-ray sources in the Taurus molecular cloud: discovery of ten new pre-main sequence stars
2008
We have analyzed optical spectra of 25 X-ray sources identified as potential new members of the Taurus molecular cloud (TMC), in order to confirm their membership in this SFR. Fifty-seven candidates were previously selected among the X-ray sources in the XEST survey, having a 2MASS counterpart compatible with a PMS star based on color-magnitude and color-color diagrams. We obtained high-resolution optical spectra for 7 of these candidates with the SARG spectrograph at the TNG telescope, which were used to search for Li absorption and to measure the Ha line and the radial and rotational velocities; 18 low-resolution optical spectra obtained with DOLORES for other candidate members were used …
Background Simulations of the Wide Field Imager of the ATHENA X-Ray Observatory
2011
The ATHENA X-ray Observatory-IXO is a planned multinational orbiting X-ray observatory with a focal length of 11.5m. ATHENA aims to perform pointed observations in an energy range from 0.1 keV to 15 keV with high sensitivity. For high spatial and timing resolution imaging and spectroscopic observations the 640x640 pixel^2 large DePFET-technology based Wide field Imager (WFI) focal plane detector, providing a field of view of 18 arcsec will be the main detector. Based on the actual mechanics, thermal and shielding design we present estimates for the WFI cosmic ray induced background obtained by the use of Monte-Carlo simulations and possible background reduction measures.
CALOS: an experiment to study the solar corona with an array of NTD Ge microcalorimeters
2002
In response to the Italian Space Agency announcement "New Ideas for Space Missions", we have proposed an observatory "CALorimetri per Osservazioni Solari" (CALOS) that will perform spatially resolved (Deltatheta similar to 2) X-ray spectroscopy of the solar corona over the 0.1 - 10 keV band using an array of NTD germanium microcalorimeters. The observatory will also include an X-ray polarimeter of radically new design that will study the hard X-ray solar emission and its polarization and will serve as a flare alarm.
Calculated solar-neutrino capture rate for a radiochemical 205Tl-based solar-neutrino detector
2020
Radiochemical experiments for low-energy solar-neutrino detection have been making headlines by exploiting the isotopes 37Cl and 71Ga. Such a very low-threshold measurement of this type can also be performed using 205Tl, which has been considered for decades for this purpose. A unique feature of this detector nucleus is the integration in the solar-neutrino flux over 106 of years owing to its long-living daughter 205Pb. In this Rapid Communication, we have calculated for the first time the cross section for the charged-current solar-neutrino scattering off 205Tl. Taking into account the solar-model-predicted neutrino fluxes and the electron-neutrino survival probabilities, a solar-neutrino …
Solar surface magnetism and irradiance on time scales
2009
The uninterrupted measurement of the total solar irradiance during the last three solar cycles and an increasing amount of solar spectral irradiance measurements as well as solar imaging observations (magnetograms and photometric data) have stimulated the development of models attributing irradiance variations to solar surface magnetism. Here we review the current status of solar irradiance measurements and modelling efforts based on solar photospheric magnetic fields. Thereby we restrict ourselves to the study of solar variations from days to the solar cycle. Phenomenological models of the solar atmosphere in combination with imaging observations of solar electromagnetic radiation and meas…
