Stafnea(TM)s bone defect in a metastatic prostate cancer patient: A diagnostic conundrum

2018

Stafne’s bone defect (SBD) is an uncommon bone alteration that affects the mandible and usually presents as an asymptomatic radiolucency located in the posterior region of body or angle of the mandible, below the alveolar canal. Although clinical and radiographic features are more often sufficient for the diagnosis, other lesions and bone alterations have been described in the differential diagnosis and may lead to a misinterpretation and an incorrect diagnosis. Herein, we report a case of an 89-yearold man with metastatic prostate cancer to multiple bones, presenting an asymptomatic solitary well-defined radiolucent image on the right side of the posterior body of the mandible, in close co…

Management of symptomatic florid cemento-osseous dysplasia : literature review and a case report

2018

Introduction Cemento-osseous dysplasia is a jaw disorder characterized by a reactive process in which normal bone is replaced by connective tissue matrix. There are different Cemento-osseous dysplasia entities. The treatment of these lesions, once diagnosed by radiology, is not required because generally they are asymptomatic. The localization is in the tooth-bearing areas of the jaws and its distribution is symmetric. Case reports In this case report, a 57-year-old Caucasian female patient was referred to our attention complaining of painful inflammatory events localized in the right angle of the jaw. The radiographic appearance, the distribution of several lesions and the positive vitalit…

Prevalence and presentation of hyperdontia in a non-syndromic, mixed Nigerian population

2019

Background Although there have been studies on the prevalence and pattern of hyperdontia in sub-Saharan African subjects with similar cultural backgrounds, based on our search, none have been able to consider these epidemiological parameters in a multiethnic black population, which is expected to add substantial knowledge to what is available. Material and Methods This is a retrospective study on the panoramic radiographs of subjects who presented at two dental centres in Abuja, Nigeria between June 2013 and June 2018. Radiographic interpretations were carried out by three independent observers, trained on computer assisted radiographic image interpretation. Data were collected and analyzed…

Diabetes mellitus, periapical inflammation and endodontic treatment outcome

2012

The possible connection between chronic oral inflammatory processes, such as apical periodontitis and periodontal disease (PD), and systemic health is one of the most interesting aspects faced by the medical and dental scientific community. Chronic apical periodontitis shares important characteristics with PD: 1) both are chronic infections of the oral cavity, 2) the Gram-negative anaerobic microbiota found in both diseases is comparable, and 3) in both infectious processes increased local levels of inflammatory mediators may have an impact on systemic levels. One of the systemic disorders linked to PD is diabetes mellitus (DM); is therefore plausible to assume that chronic apical periodont…

Feasible Evaluation of PQ Bypass Results with Duplex Ultrasound

2019

Abstract Patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) have substantially impaired health-related quality of life (HR-QoL). Chronic lower limb ischaemia due to the atherosclerotic occlusion of infra-inguinal arteries is one of the most important causes of invalidity among smokers over the age of fifty. Historically, these lesions were treated by open bypass surgery. Less invasive endovascular revascularisation methods are available to treat short lesions, while treatment of long lesions are lacking. Fully endovascular trans-venous femoro-popliteal bypass (PQ Bypass, Inc., Sunnyvale, CA, USA) to treat long femoral lesions has been developed recently. The objective of the study was to evalu…

Gelatinases and physical exercise: A systematic review of evidence from human studies

2017

Background Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), particularly gelatinase A (MMP-2) and gelatinase B (MMP-9), as well as their tissue inhibitors (TIMP-1 and TIMP-2), are involved in the development of skeletal muscle tissue, in the repair process after muscle injury and in the adaptive modifications induced by physical exercise in skeletal muscle. This paper aims at reviewing results from human studies that investigated the role of gelatinases and their inhibitors in skeletal muscle response to acute physical exercise or training. Methods Electronic databases PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus and Web of Science were searched for papers published between January 2000 and February 2017. The papers were eligi…

Heart involvement in rheumatoid arthritis: systematic review and meta-analysis.

2013

Abstract Objective The aim of our study was to conduct a systematic review with meta-analysis of the current case–control studies about the valvular and pericardial involvement in patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), asymptomatic for cardiovascular diseases. Methods Case–control studies were identified by searching PubMed (1975–2010) and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (1975–2010). Participants were adult patients with RA asymptomatic for cardiovascular diseases, and the outcome measure was the presence of cardiac involvement. Results Quantitative synthesis included 10 relevant studies out of 2326 bibliographic citations that had been found. RA resulted sign…

Subclinical Kidney Damage in Hypertensive Patients: A Renal Window Opened on the Cardiovascular System. Focus on Microalbuminuria

2017

The kidney is one of the major target organs of hypertension. Kidney damage represents a frequent event in the course of hypertension and arterial hypertension is one of the leading causes of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). ESRD has long been recognized as a strong predictor of cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality. However, over the past 20 years a large and consistent body of evidence has been produced suggesting that CV risk progressively increases as the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) declines and is already significantly elevated even in the earliest stages of renal damage. Data was supported by the very large collaborative metaanalysis of the Chronic Kidney Disease …

Imaging modalities and treatment of paediatric upper tract urolithiasis: A systematic review and update on behalf of the EAU urolithiasis guidelines …

2020

Prompt diagnosis and treatment of paediatric urolithiasis are required to avoid long term sequelae of renal damage. To systematically review the literature regarding the diagnostic imaging modalities and treatment approaches for paediatric urolithiasis.PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus and Web of Science were systematically searched from January 1980-January 2019. 76 full-text articles were included.Ultrasound and Kidney-Ureter-Bladder radiography are the baseline diagnostic examinations. Non-contrast Computed Tomography (CT) is the second line choice with high sensitivity (97-100%) and specificity (96-100%). Magnetic Resonance Urography accounts only for 2% of pediatric stone imaging studies. …
