Vulnerability of the North Water ecosystem to climate change

2021

High Arctic ecosystems and Indigenous livelihoods are tightly linked and exposed to climate change, yet assessing their sensitivity requires a long-term perspective. Here, we assess the vulnerability of the North Water polynya, a unique seaice ecosystem that sustains the world’s northernmost Inuit communities and several keystone Arctic species. We reconstruct mid-to-late Holocene changes in sea ice, marine primary production, and little auk colony dynamics through multi-proxy analysis of marine and lake sediment cores. Our results suggest a productive ecosystem by 4400–4200 cal yrs b2k coincident with the arrival of the first humans in Greenland. Climate forcing during the late Holocene, l…

Intestinal helminth communities of the long-finned pilot whale (Globicephala melas) off the Faroe Islands.

1993

SUMMARYThe intestines of 170 long-finned pilot whales, Globicephala melas, caught off the Faroe Islands (N.E. Atlantic) were examined for helminth parasites. Eight species were detected but only 4 occurred in at least 10% of the sample. No core or recurrent group of species were identified and no correlations between abundances of species were significant. Diversity values were far below those reported for other endotherms. Colonization by helminths was random, whales not being readily colonized. These features point to largely unpredictable, isolationist infracommunities, there being little potential for inter-specific interactions. Older hosts tended to harbour more diverse infracommuniti…

Marine Discharges of Offshore Produced Water: the North-East Atlantic Management Strategy

2002

Last interglacial temperature seasonality reconstructed from tropical Atlantic corals

2016

Abstract Reconstructions of last interglacial (LIG, MIS 5e, ∼127–117 ka) climate offer insights into the natural response and variability of the climate system during a period partially analogous to future climate change scenarios. We present well preserved fossil corals (Diploria strigosa) recovered from the southern Caribbean island of Bonaire (Caribbean Netherlands). These have been precisely dated by the 230Th/U-method to between 130 and 120 ka ago. Annual banding of the coral skeleton enabled construction of time windows of monthly resolved strontium/calcium (Sr/Ca) temperature proxy records. In conjunction with a previously published 118 ka coral record, our eight records of up to 37 …

Paleoclimatic and Paleoceanographic reconstruction of the Pleistocene – Holocene through the study of planktonic foraminifera of two sediment cores, …

2014

The study of climate and oceanographic setting in the recent past plays and important role to prevent what we can expect for the future. This research project is based on the study of two sedimentary cores (ATA13-OF-KT1 and ATA13-OF-KT18), collected during OCEANOGRAFLU 2013 oceanographic survey in Atlantic Ocean, southwestward of the Azores Islands, near the Mid-Atlantic ridge. In agreement with members of Paleobiodiversity and Paleoenvironmental Research Center belonging to the Department of Earth History (MNHN) of Paris, I’ll have to study these two cores, under the supervision of Prof. Annachiara Bartolini, member of this research unit, and Prof. Antonio Caruso (DiSTeM, University of Pal…

Behavioral responses of Atlantic cod to sea temperature changes

2015

Understanding responses of marine species to temperature variability is essential to predict impacts of future climate change in the oceans. Most ectotherms are expected to adjust their behavior to avoid extreme temperatures and minimize acute changes in body temperature. However, measuring such behavioral plasticity in the wild is challenging. Combining 4 years of telemetry-derived behavioral data on juvenile and adult (30–80 cm) Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), and in situ ocean temperature measurements, we found a significant effect of sea temperature on cod depth use and activity level in coastal Skagerrak. During summer, cod were found in deeper waters when sea surface temperature increase…

Unveiling community patterns and trophic niches of tropical and temperate ants using an integrative framework of field data, stable isotopes and fatt…

2018

Background: The use and partitioning of trophic resources is a central aspect of community function. On the ground of tropical forests, dozens of ant species may be found together and ecological mechanisms should act to allow such coexistence. One hypothesis states that niche specialization is higher in the tropics, compared to temperate regions. However, trophic niches of most species are virtually unknown. Several techniques might be combined to study trophic niche, such as field observations, fatty acid analysis (FAA) and stable isotope analysis (SIA). In this work, we combine these three techniques to unveil partitioning of trophic resources in a tropical and a temperate community. We d…

Linear relationship between effective radius and precipitation water content near the top of convective clouds: measurement results from ACRIDICON–CH…

2021

Quantifying the precipitation within clouds is a crucial challenge to improve our current understanding of the Earth's hydrological cycle. We have investigated the relationship between the effective radius of droplets and ice particles (re) and precipitation water content (PWC) measured by cloud probes near the top of growing convective cumuli. The data for this study were collected during the ACRIDICON–CHUVA campaign on the HALO research aircraft in clean and polluted conditions over the Amazon Basin and over the western tropical Atlantic in September 2014. Our results indicate a threshold of re∼13 µm for warm rain initiation in convective clouds, which is in agreement with previous studie…

Starptautisko organizāciju loma Latvijas valsts ekonomiskajā drošībā

2016

Bakalaura darba mērķis ir noteikt, kādi ir nozīmīgākie ekonomiskās drošības rādītāji, ko ietekmējusi Latvijas dalība starptautiskajās organizācijās. Darba mērķa sasniegšanai izvirzīti sekojoši uzdevumi: 1.Iepazīties ar nacionālās drošības koncepcijām; 2.Pētīt Latvijas valsts būtiskākos ekonomiskās drošības indikatorus; 3.Analizēt Latvijas aktuālo ekonomisko situāciju; 4.Pētīt galveno starptautisko organizāciju lomu Latvijas ekonomiskajā drošībā; 5.Izvērtēt Latvijas ieguvumus un ieguldījumus starptautiskajās organizācijās. Darbā tiek aplūkota šā brīža Latvijas ekonomiskā situācija atrodoties starptautisko organizāciju (ANO, NATO) dalībvalstu lokā. Starptautisko organizāciju prasības paredz z…
