Abstract In the series of the heterocycles X[(CH2)3]2SnR2 (16 newly synthesized compounds and two taken from the literature) and in the germanium analog BuiN[(CH2)3]2GeCl2, the donor group X (= NMe, NBz, NBui, NPri, O, S) intramolecularly attacks the Lewis acidic atoms Sn or Ge. Eight structure determinations (and, in addition, 2 taken from the literature) are compared. The nucleophilic attack at Sn is stronger for the ligands R2 =Cl2 than for the more electronegative R2 = (OSiPh3)2. Overall the familiartrans influence holds: simultaneous approach of X and weakening of the ligand R (trans). Abstract Photoelectron spectra of Group VIA metal complexes M(CO) 3 (η 6 -C 7 H 8 ) have been assigned using experimental criteria along with quantum-mechanical calculations. A general agreement between computed and measured ionization energies has been found for molecular orbitas mainly ligand in character. Similar correlations do not hold for the highest orbitals, mainly metal d based. The energies associated with ionization processes are, in this case, largely dominated by the relaxation terms. The formation of silica high temperature polymorphs from quartz: Influence of grain size and mineralising agents

Abstract The formation of high-temperature silica polymorphs in presence of Na and K has been studied at various temperatures and soaking times, starting from quartzes of different grain size, ex situ as well as in situ. The results show that cristobalite and tridymite formation is strongly influenced by the nature and the amount of mineraliser added. In particular, K seems to discriminate more between the two structures, as it produces the largest observed amount of cristobalite. Abstract The results of ab initio (first-principles) computations of structural, elastic and piezoelectric properties of Ba(1−x)SrxTiO3 (BSTO) and Ba(1−x)CaxTiO3 (BCTO) perovskite solid solutions are presented, discussed and compared. We present a survey of recent first principles simulations of the neutral oxygen vacancies (F centers) existing as native or radiation-induced point defects in various crystalline metal oxides in different forms (bulk, bare substrate surface, and on the interface with metal adsorbates). We mainly consider periodic models in calculations of point defects using the metal oxide supercell or cyclic clusters. Abstract Two-dimensional (2D) slabs and monoperiodic (1D) nanowires orthogonal to the slab surface of rutile-based TiO 2 structure terminated by densely-packed surfaces and facets, respectively, have been simulated in the current study. The procedure of structural generation of nanowires (NWs) from titania slabs (2D → 1D) is described. We have simulated: ( i ) (110), (100), (101) and (001) slabs of different thicknesses as well as ( ii ) [001]- and [110]-oriented nanowires of different diameters terminated by either four types of related {110} facets or alternating { 1 1 ¯ 0 } and {001} facets, respectively. Tailoring of the Solid State Properties of Al–Nb Mixed Oxides: A Photoelectrochemical Study

Al–Nb containing mixed oxides were grown by anodizing sputter-deposited Al–Nb alloys of different compositions. A photoelectrochemical investigation was carried out in order to estimate the band gap, flat band potential, and conductivity type of these oxides as a function of their composition. The dependence of the band gap on the composition of mixed sp–d metal oxides has been rationalized by using a semiempirical correlation between the difference of electronegativity and band gap of oxides proposed in the literature some years ago and recently tested for regular d–d metal mixed oxides. Energetic stability and photocatalytic activity of SrTiO3 nanowires: ab initio simulations

First principles periodic calculations based on the density functional theory within the localized atomic orbital approach (DFT-LCAO) using the hybrid exchange–correlation potential PBE0 have been performed in order to simulate the structural and electronic properties of both stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric [001]-oriented four-faceted SrTiO3 (STO) nanowires (NW) of cubic structure. Their diameters have been varied from 0.3 up to 2.4 nm with a corresponding consequent change of NW cross-section from 2 � 2t o 5� 5 extension of the lattice constant in bulk.
