Visual attention while solving the test of understanding graphs in kinematics: an eye-tracking analysis

2019

This study used eye-tracking to capture students' visual attention while taking a test of understanding graphs in kinematics (TUG-K). A total of N = 115 upper-secondary-level students from Germany and Switzerland took the 26-item multiple-choice instrument after learning about kinematics graphs in the regular classroom. Besides choosing the correct alternative among research-based distractors, the students were required to judge their response confidence for each question. The items were presented sequentially on a computer screen equipped with a remote eye tracker, resulting in a set of approx. 3000 paired responses (accuracy and confidence) and about 40 h of eye-movement data (approx. 500…

Cross-Frequency Coupling in Developmental Perspective

2019

It is generally assumed that different electroencephalogram (EEG) frequency bands are somehow related to different computational modes in the brain. Integration of these computational modes is reflected in the phenomenon of cross-frequency coupling (CFC). On slow temporal scales, CFC may reflect trait-like properties, which posits a question of its developmental trends. This is the first study that explored source-level CFC measures in a developmental perspective using both cross-sectional and longitudinal designs. CFC measures demonstrated good test-retest stability and proved to be higher in adults in cortical areas participating in sensory-motor integration, response inhibition, and atte…

Effects of menu structure and touch screen scrolling style on the variability of glance durations during in-vehicle visual search tasks.

2011

The effects of alternative navigation device display features on drivers' visual sampling efficiency while searching forpoints of interest were studied in two driving simulation experiments with 40 participants. Given that the number of display items was sufficient, display features that facilitate resumption of visual search following interruptions were expected to lead to more consistent in-vehicle glance durations. As predicted, compared with a grid-style menu, searching information in a list-style menu while driving led to smaller variance in durations of in-vehicle glances, in particular with nine item displays. Kinetic touch screen scrolling induced a greater number of very short in-v…

Systematic review of the evidence of interoceptive awareness in performers

2016

Ismael Pedraza, 2016. Systematic review of the evidence of interoceptive awareness in performers. Master s thesis in Sport and Exercise Psychology. Department of Sport Sciences. University of Jyväskylä. Pp. 53. Interoception is the conscious awareness of internal sensations coming from autonomic responses of the body including inputs such as visceral sensations, heart rate, sensations of tight muscles, etc. Those sensations are experienced due to the autonomic nervous system that is in charge of controlling and regulating bodily functions and cannot be manipulated intentionally. Previous research on interoception in performers has shown that a relationship exists between our inner bodily se…

Flying solo or working together? How are the media professionals managed? : perceptions of heads of PR-agencies and editors-in-chief

2012

Tämä tutkimus tutkii viestintätoimistojen ja sanomalehtien johtamista. Tutkimuksen aihe on haasteellinen, sillä aikaisemmat tutkimukset eivät tutki johtamista viestintäyrityksissä vaan keskittyvät mm. suhdetoiminnan (PR) integroimiseen osaksi viestintäyritysten asiakasorganisaatioiden johtamista.

The feasibility of working memory tablet tasks in predicting scholastic skills in classroom settings

2019

Cognitive assessment in natural group settings facilitates data collection but poses threats to the validity. In this study, tablet‐based working memory (WM) tasks, the counting span, and reading span were used in predicting 12‐year‐old children's (N = 837) scholastic skills and fluid intelligence in a classroom with environmental noise. WM tasks had excellent internal consistency, correlated with scholastic skills, and accounted for more of the variance in cognitive performance (grade point average, fluid intelligence, scholastic skills) compared with individually administered (n = 190) digit span task. Furthermore, the multilevel analysis revealed that compared with the classrooms with no…

The impact of retro-cue validity on working memory representation: Evidence from electroencephalograms.

2022

Visual working memory (VWM) performance can be improved by retrospectively cueing an item. The validity of retro-cues has an impact on the mechanisms underlying the retro-cue effect, but how non-cued representations are handled under different retro-cue validity conditions is not yet clear. Here, we used electroencephalograms to investigate whether retro-cue validity can affect the fate of non-cued representations in VWM. The participants were required to perform a change-detection task using a retro-cue with 80% or 20% validity. Contralateral delay activity and the lateralized alpha power were used to assess memory storage and selective attention, respectively. The retro-cue could redirect…
