Now you see me: perception as a basic principle in foreign languages learning
2016
From monitoring to sharing of attention in dyadic interaction: The affordances of gaze data to better understand social aspects of remote collaborati…
2020
This paper aims to better understand the social aspects of collaborative problem solving (CPS) through studying joint attention behaviour (JAB) in an online game–like environment. To capture these behaviours and exemplify how ‘jointness’ is achieved in CPS in remote dyadic interaction, event-related measures are utilised based on the following multiple interaction data: (1) individuals’ gaze data from CPS task completion and (2) automatically generated log files (i.e. chats and actions) from dyadic interactions. The results give empirical evidence of the detached, individualistic attention experiences (i.e. monitoring and common attention) and of bidirectional relations (i.e. mutual and sha…
What information should I look for again? : Attentional difficulties distracts reading of task assignments
2019
This large-scale eye-movement study (N = 164) investigated how students read short task assignments to complete information search problems and how their cognitive resources are associated with this reading behavior. These cognitive resources include information searching subskills, prior knowledge, verbal memory, reading fluency, and attentional difficulties. In this study, the task assignments consisted of four sentences. The first and last sentences provided context, while the second or third sentence was the relevant or irrelevant sentence under investigation. The results of a linear mixed-model and latent change score analyses showed the ubiquitous influence of reading fluency on first…
Effects of physical activity on neural markers of attention in children
2016
Huoli passiivisen elämäntavan vaikutuksista oppimisen edellytyksiin on kasvanut, kun lasten fyysinen aktiivisuus on vähentynyt. Useat tutkimukset tukevat fyysisen aktiivisuuden suojaavaa vaikutusta erilaisiin kognitiivisiin toimintoihin. Tarkkaavaisuuden kohdistaminen relevantteihin ärsykkeisiin näyttää olevan merkittävä osa oppimista, minkä vuoksi mielenkiinto on kohdistettu nykytutkimuksessa tarkkaavaisuuden mekanismeihin. Alfa-oskillaatioiden inhibitorinen rooli tarkkaavaisuudessa on saanut vahvistusta spatiaalista tarkkaavaisuutta selvittäneistä tutkimuksista. Alfa-oskillaatioiden on havaittu lateralisoituvan siten, että alfa-aktiivisuus laskee näköärsykettä prosessoivalla aivokuorella …
Physical activity and aerobic fitness show different associations with brain processes underlying anticipatory selective visuospatial attention in ad…
2021
ABSTRACTUnderlying brain processes of exercise-related benefits on executive functions and the specific contribution of physical activity vs. aerobic fitness are poorly understood, especially during adolescence. We explored whether and how physical activity and aerobic fitness are associated with selective attention and the oscillatory dynamics induced by an anticipatory spatial cue. Further, we studied whether the link between physical exercise level and cognitive control in adolescents is mediated by the task-related oscillatory activity. Magnetoencephalographic alpha oscillations during a modified Posner’s cueing paradigm were measured in 59 adolescents (37 females and 22 males, 12 to 17…

Kompetencje informacyjne i kompetencje medialne wobec procesów zarządzania uwagą masowej publiczności
2017
Attentional bias towards interpersonal aggression in depression – an eye movement study
2020
Depressed individuals exhibit an attentional bias towards mood-congruent stimuli, yet evidence for biased processing of threat-related information in human interaction remains scarce. Here, we tested whether an attentional bias towards interpersonally aggressive pictures over interpersonally neutral pictures could be observed to a greater extent in depressed participants than in control participants. Eye movements were recorded while the participants freely viewed visually matched interpersonally aggressive and neutral pictures, which were presented in pairs. Across the groups, participants spent more time looking at neutral pictures than at aggressive pictures, probably reflecting avoidanc…

Some years ago Cheung et al. (2008) proposed the complete design (CD) for measuring the failure of selective attention in composite objects. Since the CD is a fully balanced design, analysis of response bias may reveal potential effects of the experimental manipulation, the stimulus material, and/or attributes of the observers. Here we used the CD to prove whether external features modulate perception of internal features with the context congruency paradigm (Nachson et al., 1995; Meinhardt-Injac et al., 2010) in a larger sample of N = 303 subjects. We found a large congruency effect (Cohen's d = 1.78), which was attenuated by face inversion (d = 1.32). The congruency relation also strongly…
Sport participation and vigilance in children: Influence of different sport expertise
2018
PURPOSE: The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between different types of sport expertise (externally-paced vs. self-paced sports) and vigilance performance in children by evaluating the cardiovascular fitness level of the participants. METHODS: Three groups of children (11.0 ± 0.2 years) differentiated in terms of their regular sport participation (football players, n = 20; track and field athletes, n = 20; non-athletic controls, n = 20) took part in the study. In one session, participants performed the Leger Multi-stage fitness test to estimate their aerobic fitness level. In another session, participants completed the Psychomotor Vigilance Task (PVT) to evaluate their v…
