Analysis of Caffeine, Sweeteners, and Other Additives in Beverages by Vibrational Spectroscopy

2001

This chapter presents a review of the scientific literature on the use of vibrational spectroscopy, near-infrared (NIR), mid-infrared (mid-IR), and Raman, for the analysis of caffeine, sweeteners, and other additives in beverages and related products. Direct analysis procedures of coffee and tea, for both classification according to precedence or variety and quantitative determination of caffeine, are available. For beverage analysis, caffeine has been determined by direct attenuated total reflection (ATR) measurement or by transmission spectroscopy in the mid-IR region after extraction with chloroform. Different strategies have been employed for the analysis of sweeteners in beverages and …

Surface Morphology of Single and Multi-Layer Silicon Nitride Dielectric Nano-Coatings on Silicon Dioxide and Polycrystalline Silicon

2019

Silicon nitride (Si3N4) in a form of single and multi-layer nanofilms is proposed to be used as a dielectric layer in nanocapacitors for operation in harsh environmental conditions. Characterization of surface morphology, roughness and chemical bonds of the Si3N4 coatings has an important role in production process as the surface morphology affects the contact surface with other components of the produced device. Si3N4 was synthesized by using low pressure chemical vapour deposition method and depositing single and multi-layer (3 – 5 layers) nanofilms on SiO2 and polycrystalline silicon (PolySi). The total thickness of the synthesized nanofilms was 20 – 60 nm. Surface morphology was investi…

Towards the Point of Care and Noninvasive Classification of Bladder Cancer from Urine Sediment Infrared Spectroscopy. Spectral differentiation of nor…

2021

Abstract Bladder cancer (BC) is the 9th cancer cause of death and one of most cost-intensive in the world. The diagnostic tools are still not at all satisfactory. Herein we evaluated the potential of infrared spectroscopy to detect molecular changes that precede and accompany the carcinogenesis in voided urine sediment. We collected 165 samples from patients being diagnosed for BC and measured them with attenuated total reflectance Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (ATR FTIR). Samples were primarily divided into three groups according to cytology that indicated the presence of normal, abnormal and cancer cells. ATR FTIR spectra of sediments were analyzed with the use of partial leas…

A full economic evaluation of extensive vaccination against rotavirus with RIX4414 vaccine at National and Regional level in Italy

2013

Vaccination of all healthy children against rotavirus (RV) has been recommended, since the availability of vaccines, both in Europe (PIDJ) and Italy (pediatricians). The aims of universal vaccination against RV include the protection of children against moderate/severe gastroenteritis forms by RV (GARV), prevent hospitalizations, reduce the severity and duration of the disease, and reduce morbidity and socioeconomic costs. Payers need to informed regarding the efficacy and the healthcare utilization related to RV vaccination in order to decide in favour of its extensive implementation. The aim of this paper is to assess the clinical and financial impact of the extensive vaccination aganist …
