Local Interactions and the Global City Metropolization in Warsaw
2002
A number of the world's large cities are taking on increasing economic importance in the international arenas because they concentrate high-order activities This metropolization process is a result of the changes occurring in the emerging post-industrial economy, i.e. the rise of services and information. It is based on the combination of proximity interactions and global interactions and it is characterized both by a specific internal spatial pattern and by a large outside area of influence. Since the transition period, services, and particularly high-order services, have grown more rapidly in Poland than in EU countries, as if a catching-up process has been underway. A large part of these…
Female–female attraction influences nest establishment in the digger wasp Stizus continuus (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae)
2008
Although digger wasps are good models for the study of nest site selection, the behaviour of females in relation to time of nest establishment has rarely been considered despite this being the key to discrimination between substrate availability-based and a female attraction-based selection. We carried out a study on nest establishment by the digger wasp Stizus continuus (Klug), giving to all nests dug by the wasps both spatial (nearest neighbour distance to nests, proximity of vegetation, soil hardness) and temporal (day of excavation) attributes. Stizus continuus females dug more nests under bush edges, where the soil was much softer. There was no tendency for females to maximize distance…
Hamiltonian tools for the analysis of optical polarization control
2011
Import JabRef; International audience; The study of the polarization dynamics of two counterpropagating beams in optical fibers has recently been the subject of a growing renewed interest, from both the theoretical and experimental points of view. This system exhibits a phenomenon of polarization attraction, which can be used to achieve a complete polarization of an initially unpolarized signal beam, almost without any loss of energy. Along the same way, an arbitrary polarization state of the signal beam can be controlled and converted into any other desired state of polarization, by adjusting the polarization state of the counterpropagating pump beam. These properties have been demonstrate…
The Upsides and Downsides of High Self-Control: Evidence for Effects of Similarity and Situation Dependency
2021
High trait self-control is generally depicted as favorable. We investigated whether this holds for social perception. Using vignettes, we tested whether a person with high self-control is 1) preferred as a partner for all or only certain social situations, 2) perceived as less likeable than a person with low self-control, 3) liked more if the person is female and the behavior thus fits the sex-stereotype, and 4) perceived differently from a person with low self-control with respect to a wide range of adjectives used to describe personality. Competing theories are presented for each area. Results indicate that although high self-control is associated with a wide range of socially desirable t…
O przemianach obrzędowości Świąt Wielkanocnych w Polsce (na przykładzie święcenia potraw)
2019
Przedmiotem refleksji są wybrane aspekty dotyczące przeobrażeń obrzędowości Świąt Wielkanocnych w Polsce. W artykule skupiono uwagę przede wszystkim na tradycji święcenia pokarmów w Wielką Sobotę, omówiono dawne i współczesne praktyki zwyczajowe z nią związane. Podstawą opracowań jest dostępna literatura etnograficzna, pilotażowe badania terenowe prowadzone przez autorkę w różnych częściach Polski, w tym głównie w województwach śląskim, opolskim i łódzkim oraz materiały internetowe.
Caste-dependent reactions to soldier defensive secretion and chiral alarm/recruitment pheromone inNasutitermes princeps
1990
The soldier frontal gland secretion ofNasutitermes princeps induces strong short-range caste-specific alarm and attraction in both soldiers and workers. Soldiers are excited and patrol the surroundings of the source. The secretion per se does not induce ejection of additional secretion. Large workers of the second stage or older are massively attracted when tested in homogeneous groups. They focus their activities much more accurately than the soldiers around the source. The workers' reaction is less intense in the presence of soldiers. Large and small workers of stage 1 scarcely react at all to the secretion, whether tested in homogeneous or mixed groups. These results suggest the followin…
Singing rate and female attraction in the pied flycatcher: an experiment
1990
«Attirer les femelles» est une des principales fonctions du chant des oiseaux. Beaucoup d'etudes ont mis en evidence l'effet de variations du repertoire sonore sur le succes d'accouplement mais peu d'entre elles sont consacrees a l'intensite du chant. Dans une telle optique, cette etude examine les effets de manipulations experimentales de chants sur la selection du partenaire par les femelles
Fatal attraction: Using distance to measure contagion in good times as well as bad
2007
This paper proposes a new measure of contagion that is good at anticipating future vulnerabilities. Building on previous work, it uses correlations of equity markets across countries to measure contagion, but in a departure from previous practice measures contagion using the relationship of these correlations with distance. Also in contrast to previous work, our test is good at identifying periods of “positive contagion,” in which capital flows to emerging markets in a herd-like manner largely unrelated to fundamentals. Identifying such periods of “fatal attraction” is important as they provide the essential ingredients for subsequent crises and rapid outflows of capital.
On basins of attraction for a predator-prey model via meshless approximation
2016
Abstract. In this work an epidemiological predator-prey model is studied. It analyzes the spread of an infectious disease with frequency-dependent and vertical transmission within the predator population. In particular we consider social predators, i.e. they cooperate in groups to hunt. The result is a three-dimensional system in which the predator population is divided into susceptible and infected individuals. Studying the dynamical system and bifurcation diagrams, a scenario was identified in which the model shows multistability but the domain of attraction of one equilibrium point can be so small that it is almost the point itself. From a biological point of view it is important to anal…
