Interacting with Augmented Reality Mirrors

2018

This chapter deals with the topic of Augmented Reality Mirrors (ARMs) – a kind of specular interfaces making use of Augmented Reality technology. The review presented in the chapter first analyses the current setups for the construction of ARMs. Secondly, it presents a study on their potential for inferring in human perception (e.g. behaviour and emotions) and the high interactivity potential and usability they have. In the third place, it shows their use in different areas of knowledge, namely entertainment, edutainment, clothing, arts and medical therapy. Then, the chapter presents a discussion, highlighting the current technological barriers and the need for more research. Finally, futur…

A Mobile Augmented Reality System for Enhancing Electrical Machine Supervision

2019

Electrical machines are used almost everywhere, and our daily life depends on them. For this reason, it is important to articulate mechanisms to control, supervise, and perform proper maintenance of these machines, especially those used in critical industrial process. The SCADA protocol is one of the technologies that eases the operation and supervision of electrical machines. However, the absence of a spatial connection between the SCADA signals and the machines being supervised suggests the use of augmented reality (AR) to fill this void. This chapter describes SIMARA: A Mobile AR application based on a dual computer-vision system (QR-codes and fiducial markers). SIMARA provides a robust …

Surgery of the Cranio-Vertebral Junction: Image Guidance, Navigation, and Augmented Reality

2019

Due to the density of essential, small, and mobile structures, mastering the surgical anatomy of the craniovertebral junction may be extremely challenging. Quality and safety of interventions can be improved using navigation. Currently, patient-specific anatomy preparation, surgical planning, intervention, and quality assessment are disconnected actions performed in different conditions and environments and by multiple team members. The whole process needs to be integrated by surgeons performing the intervention. The complexity of the process exposes to errors and degraded precision. It is therefore relevant to develop tools that reduce the need to extrapolate and simplify the information i…

AUGMENTED REALITY. PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE.

2013

The access to information is a right and a duty. An accessible website becomes a universal resource for all people who surf the net, it becomes a powerful tool to spread its message and its information with the conscious and the knowledge that the information will come to anyone who wants to access it. The innovative technologies of graphic communication (ICT) are the means to allow this cultural diffusion. In this paper the goal is to demonstrate that a conscious use of ICT allows the accessibility of the cultural heritage. The case study is on the prisons of the Inquisition in Palermo. A great opportunity has permitted to carry out a cultural, historical, architectural and social research…

Navigating uncharted waters: Designing business models for virtual and augmented reality companies in the medical industry

2021

Abstract New technologies are at the heart of industry transformation. Virtual and augmented reality companies provide fundamentally new ways of communication, treatment, education, and specialist training within the medical industry. However, business models for new ventures that target the medical industry have received scant attention within academic research. Using a multiple case study approach, we analyze how virtual and augmented reality firms create value for their customers in the medical industry. In all, we have studied eight companies that offer different types of solutions for their target segments. The results of the analysis are four design elements consisting of twelve posit…

Integrating xAPI in AR applications for Positive Behaviour Intervention and Support

2021

The spread of new technologies like Augmented Reality and recent technological developments, provide innovative techniques and tools that show increasing potential in education. In this paper we will showcase the work implemented within the Horizon 2020 European project ARETE (Augmented Reality Interactive Educational System). One of the pilots of this project aims to investigate for the first time the introduction of AR to support a behavioral lesson in schools where Positive Behaviour Intervention and Support (PBIS) methodology is adopted. In particular, we present the study conducted to track user interactions with augmented reality objects through the use of the Experience API standard.

A VR/AR Environment for Multi-User Liver Anatomy Education

2021

We present a Virtual and Augmented Reality multi-user prototype of a learning environment for liver anatomy education. Our system supports various training scenarios ranging from small learning groups to classroom-size education, where students and teachers can participate in virtual reality, augmented reality, or via desktop PCs. In an iterative development process with surgeons and teachers, a virtual organ library was created. Nineteen liver data sets were used comprising 3D surface models, 2D image data, pathology information, diagnosis and treatment decisions. These data sets can interactively be sorted and investigated individually regarding their volumetric and meta information. The …
