The Financial Crisis: An Introduction
2020
This section discusses the origins of the Eurozone crisis in European Monetary Union before discussing various dimensions of how the Eurozone coped, its impact on integration, and the crisis’ implications for the future of the EU. While the authors all show that the EU’s response to the financial crisis reflected the scenario ‘muddling through,’ they have different perspectives on the future of integration post crisis. Rosen and Olsen point out that the austerity policies implemented after crisis resulted in collective protest movements across Europe. Tranoy and Stenstad highlight the failure of financial sector reforms to reset the social role of finance in a more equitable way. Caporaso a…

Darba mērķis ir analizēt Napoleona Bonaparta uzbrukuma stratēģiju un taktiku kauju kontekstā, balstoties uz viedokļiem Rietumu vēstures literatūrā. Towards the Post-Carbon Society: Searching for Signs of the Transition and Identifying Obstacles
2016
The transition to a post-carbon society, in which the consumption of fossil fuels falls over time, is determined by the need to prevent catastrophic climate change, the increasing cost of energy and complex combinations of both these causes. The transition will not only entail political adjustments and the replacement of some technologies by others, but will be accompanied by social and cultural changes that bring about substantial modifications in the organization of our societies and our ways of life. Based on the situation in Spain, this article analyses whether the current conditions, which date back to the crisis that began in 2007, favour a benign and smooth transition, or, on the con…

Being positive, being hopeful, being happy : young adults reflecting on their future in times of austerity
2020
The aim of this article is to analyse the ways in which young adults reflect on their futures. We are particularly interested in how they expect to organize their lives in conditions that seem to offer pessimistic rather than hopeful prospects. How does this happen under social conditions where the major public and individual concerns are with how young adults organize their material lives and how they earn sufficient livelihoods to become good citizens? What are the grounds for their future visions? In our analysis we use 40 interviews with young Finnish adults aged between 18 and 30. The respondents are students, as well as employed and unemployed young adults. Our findings show that the…

2015
Latvia demonstrates common trends with the majority of the countries affected by the recession, as well as some peculiarities in overcoming the impact of the global economic and financial recession on education mainly due to an unbelievable austerity. Education in this country has suffered greatly, and its damage is adequate to the 67% of the budget cuts between 2008 and 2011 (IZM, 2011). The article deals with the school improvement after the recession, recent implementation of innovations to cover the damages and catch up with the ideas of the Next Generation learning, to supply schools with the appropriate curricula and meeting the learners needs for their individual development and abil…
Is fiscal fatigue a threat to consolidation programmes?
2015
Building on a narrative approach to identify episodes of fiscal consolidation, data for a group of 17 industrial countries over the period 1978-2009 and continuous-time duration models, we find evidence suggesting that the likelihood of a fiscal consolidation ending increases over time, but only for programs that last less than six years. Additionally, fiscal consolidations tend to last longer in non-European than in European countries. Our results emphasize that chronic fiscal imbalances might lead to a vicious austerity cycle, while discipline in the behaviour of fiscal authorities is a means of achieving credible and shorter adjustment measures. Therefore, fiscal fatigue is likely to com…
