Review of E.J. Bakker, ed., Authorship and Greek Song: Authority, Authenticity and Performance (Studies in Archaic and Classical Greek Song, Vol. 3),…

2019

The innovative idea shared by all the essays in the volume consists in the identification of authority as the cornerstone of a poetic piece of art, independent from both the context of its original performance—considering its reperformances in different times and contexts—and its performers, within a wider and more variegated cultural landscape than the original context of a given song. Such an approach especially highlights the idea of the survival of songs through generations, beyond the social and political context, the performers, and the audience of their first performance, from a panhellenic perspective.

Body, Nature, Language: Artisans to Artists in the Commodification of Authenticity

1969

This article examines processes of authenticating and selling handicrafts at the conjuncture of cultural pride and economic profit in two peripheral sites (Finnish Sámiland and rural Québec), under shared conditions of late capitalism and globalising political economies. These conditions (re)structure traditionalist and modernist discourses about artisans' historical bodies, their connections to the local land (nature), and how they interactionally authenticate and sell their products through language. Under these conditions, the commodification of authenticity pushes artisans and handicrafts beyond being emblems of national belonging and collective tradition, and toward individualised, art…

“How Real People Really Need Mathematics in the Real World”—Authenticity in Mathematics Education

2018

This paper discusses authenticity from the perspective of mathematics education. Often, school mathematics offers students inauthentic word problems, which don’t show the authentic usefulness of mathematics in real life. In some tasks, authentic aspects are combined with inauthentic ones (e.g., an authentic context, but the question is artificial and different from what people within that context would ask). Several studies show that students are more motivated by authentic questions than by authentic contexts. Embedding these findings, I discuss issues associated with defining authenticity in education. A first issue is that philosophers use the term to characterize a person’s existential …

Development of a high performance thin layer chromatography method for the rapid qualification and quantification of phenolic compounds and abscisic …

2019

Honey is a natural product with a complex chemical composition consisting of sugars and other bioactive compounds. It is important in many traditional systems of medicine, exhibiting interesting bioactivities, in particular antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Authentication of botanical origin of honeys is particularly important in this context. Therefore, methods for quality control of honey and detection of its adulteration are very important. A HPTLC method for the quantitative determination of phenolic compounds in honey was developed for the first time. Seven phenolic compounds were detected and determined quantitatively in lime and acacia honey samples. The obtai…

Autenticità, materia, memoria

2012

The chapter is dedicated to the concepts of authenticity, matter and memory. The discussion draws the thought of Walter Benjamin, Henry Focillon, Cesare Brandi, George Stainer, Jacques Le Goff and other Italian contributions. The issue of materiality is connected to works of architecture and their values of irreproducibility and authenticity.

Quel "mezzo pollice" di materia

2012

This chapter includes a reflection on the role of architectural surfaces in monuments and ancient contexts. In attempt to trace the evolution of the concept of res…

Self treating in the moderne era

2013

In the modern era, self healing is to respond to situations created by medicine. Its effectiveness, its limits, its interventions, its practice, its tendency to medicalize existences, its inclusion in market economy are as many factors that interact with the self healing ability as attest the disruption of the patient's identity schema during interventions to repair physical trauma, chronic patient which depends on medicine, the medicalization of the aging. As well the task assigned to the modern man is to escape from enslavements, weathering effects, interferences generated by medical activities. In this sense, self healing is, on the one hand, to decrypt the aims of medicine and to determ…

A Dynamic Attribute-Based Authentication Scheme

2015

Attribute-based authentication (ABA) is an approach to authenticate users by their attributes, so that users can get authenticated anonymously and their privacy can be protected. In ABA schemes, required attributes are represented by attribute trees, which can be combined with signature schemes to construct ABA schemes. Most attribute trees are built from top to down and can not change with attribute requirement changes. In this paper, we propose an ABA scheme based on down-to-top built attribute trees or dynamic attribute trees, which can change when attribute requirements change. Therefore, the proposed dynamic ABA scheme is more efficient in a dynamic environment by avoiding regenerating…

An Efficient Traceable Attribute-Based Authentication Scheme with One-Time Attribute Trees

2015

Attribute-based authentication (ABA) is a way to authenticate signers by means of attributes and it requests proof of possessing required attributes from the one to be authenticated. To achieve the property of traceability, required attributes should be combined with the signer’s attribute private keys in order to generate a signature. In some schemes, signers’ attribute keys are related to attribute trees, so changing attribute trees will cause the regeneration of all related attribute keys. In this paper, we propose an efficient traceable ABA scheme, where the generation of signers’ attribute keys is independent from attribute trees. Thus the same set of attribute keys can be used with a …
