Behavioral aspects in children's brothers affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders
2018
Introduction: Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a permanent and complex disability arising within the first three years of life characterized by a socio-communicative disorder and by fixed interests and repetitive behaviors. The present pilot study aims to evaluate behavioral aspects in a small population of siblings of ASD children. Material and methods: Population: 5 school-aged children (2 males, 3 females) (mean age 9.235 ± 2.041) were enrolled, as siblings of ASD children, and for comparison, 12 healthy (7 males, 5 females) children (average age 9,528 ± 3,351). All subjects underwent evaluation of the behavioral with Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) scale. Results: The two groups were…
The 'Extreme Female Brain' : Increased Cognitive Empathy as a Dimension of Psychopathology
2016
Abstract Baron-Cohen's ‛extreme male brain' theory postulates that autism involves exaggerated male-typical psychology, with reduced empathizing (considered here as social–emotional interest, motivation and abilities) and increased systemizing (non-social, physical-world and rule-based interest, motivation and abilities), in association with its male-biased sex ratio. The concept of an ‘extreme female brain', involving some combination of increased empathizing and reduced systemizing, and its possible role in psychiatric conditions, has been considerably less well investigated. Female-biased sex ratios have been described in two conditions, depression and borderline personality disorder (BP…
BCL11A intellectual developmental disorder: defining the clinical spectrum and genotype-phenotype correlations
2021
AbstractPurposeHeterozygous variants in BCL11A underlie an intellectual developmental disorder with persistence of fetal hemoglobin (BCL11A-IDD, a.k.a. Dias-Logan syndrome). We sought to delineate the genotypic and phenotypic spectrum of BCL11A-IDD.MethodsWe performed an in-depth analysis of 42 patients with BCL11A-IDD ascertained through a collaborative network of clinical and research colleagues. We also reviewed 33 additional affected individuals previously reported in the literature or available through public repositories with clinical information.ResultsMolecular and clinical data analysis of 75 patients with BCL11A-IDD identified 60 unique variants (30 frameshift, 7 missense, 6 splic…
Quality of Inclusive Educational System for Work with Students with Autism Different Needs in Italy
2015
The need for realization of inclusive education, which is the basis of a sustainable education, will require new challenges in the Education System. The system used in Italy can be used as an example. Italy passed avant-garde laws concerning the integration and inclusion of special needs students into the general school system already more than thirty years ago, in the 1970s. However, even after all this time and experience, there are still unresolved problems, which testifies to the complexities of the matter. This research offers an insight into the quality of the existing Italian inclusive education system specifically in relation to students with autism. Thereby it hopes to provide educ…
Evidence of the Gluten-Free and Casein-Free Diet in Autism Spectrum Disorders
2014
In autism spectrum disorders, many parents resort to alternative treatments and these are generally perceived as risk free. Among these, the most commonly used is the gluten-free, casein-free diet. The objective of this work was to conduct a systematic review of studies published from 1970 to date related to the gluten-free, casein-free diet in autism spectrum disorder patients. Few studies can be regarded as providing sound scientific evidence since they were blinded randomized controlled trials, and even these were based on small sample sizes, reducing their validity. We observed that the evidence on this topic is currently limited and weak. We recommend that it should be only used after…
Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)
2019
Material docente programado mediante la ayuda del Servei de Política Lingüística. Autism spectrum Disorders (ASD) are, without doubt, one of the nosological groups that cause the greatest suffering in childhood both for those who are affected with this condition and for those who accompany them (parents, family, caregivers, etc.). ASD is a group of chronic conditions with onset before the age of three. However, it is believed that in many cases affectation is present at birth or even in the foetal period. Alt-hough some children have signs in the first few months of life, others do not become manifest until 24 months of age. In fact, development sometimes appears to be normal until the chil…
Utilizing content analysis in teaching materials for children with autism spectrum disorder
2019
It is important to look at how education materials for students with disability view disability itself. Raising the general public's awareness on autism is crucial because of the rise in the antivaxx and anti-science movements, particularly in the United States. This thesis utilizes Content Analysis to explore how a set of teaching materials for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) understands ASD and the agency of the ASD child and creates trust with the readers. I analyze two argumentation styles to understand how those forms of argumentation create trust with the readers. This study is qualitative and relies on philosophical and cultural definitions of agency and personhood. In a…
Dažādības pedagoģiskie risinājumi saistībā ar autisma spektra traucējumiem bilingvālajā vidē: gadījuma analīze
2017
Is It Possible to Educate, Intervene or “Cure” Autism Spectrum Disorder? A Content Analysis of YouTube Videos
2021
