Being Moved by Unfamiliar Sad Music Is Associated with High Empathy

2016

The paradox of enjoying listening to music that evokes sadness is yet to be fully understood. Unlike prior studies that have explored potential explanations related to lyrics, memories, and mood regulation, we investigated the types of emotions induced by unfamiliar, instrumental sad music, and whether these responses are consistently associated with certain individual difference variables. One hundred and two participants were drawn from a representative sample to minimize self-selection bias. The results suggest that the emotional responses induced by unfamiliar sad music could be characterized in terms of three underlying factors: Relaxing sadness, Moving sadness, and Nervous sadness. Re…

The Power of Odor Persuasion: The Incorporation of Olfactory Cues in Virtual Environments for Personalized Relaxation

2021

Olfaction is the most ancient sense and is directly connected with emotional areas in the brain. It gives rise to perception linked to emotion both in everyday life and in memory-recall activities. Despite its emotional primacy in perception and its role in sampling the real physical world, olfaction is rarely used in clinical psychological settings because it relies on stimuli that are difficult to deliver. However, recent developments in virtual-reality tools are creating novel possibilities for the engagement of the sense of smell in this field. In this article, we present the relevant features of olfaction for relaxation purposes and then discuss possible future applications of involvi…

Review of the “autobiographical space” in Boris Vian’s narrative

2019

This article addresses the difficulty of establi - shing limits and categories between reality and fiction in the narrative work and the “writing of the self” by Boris Vian, in relation to the prin - ciples of the Pataphysics College to which he belongs. For this, through the concept of “auto - biographical space” of Lejeune, which outlines and modifies his theory previously exposed in the Pacte autobiographique, we will focus on the techniques of the language-universe that plays with the principle of identity through the pseudonyms, the self-citation and the no - velistic transpositions of friends and acquain - tances who, masked, are participants in the vi - cissitudes of their fictional …

The positive effect of music on source memory

2015

Several studies have investigated how to improve episodic memory performance by manipulating the factors that are crucial for successful encoding. There is an ongoing debate about whether a complex stimulus such as music can improve memory, and in particular memory for words, rather than interfere with correct encoding of information. Therefore, the present study aims to investigate whether verbal episodic memory can be improved by background context of instrumental music. Twenty young adults were asked to memorize different lists of words presented against a background of music, environmental sounds or silence. Their episodic memory performance was then tested in terms of item and source …

Subjective Experience of Episodic Memory and Metacognition: A Neurodevelopmental Approach

2013

Episodic retrieval is characterized by the subjective experience of remembering. This experience enables the co-ordination of memory retrieval processes and can be acted on metacognitively. In successful retrieval, the feeling of remembering may be accompanied by recall of important contextual information. On the other hand, when people fail (or struggle) to retrieve information, other feelings, thoughts and information may come to mind. In this review, we examine the subjective and metacognitive basis of episodic memory function from a neurodevelopmental perspective, looking at recollection paradigms (such as source memory, and the report of recollective experience) and metacognitive parad…

I marginalia di Dino Buzzati: schemi, illustrazioni e disegni

2022

Settore L-FIL-LET/14 - Critica Letteraria E Letterature ComparateAccording to this proposed analysis of Dino Buzzati's graphic work which can also be extended to other doubly talented authors the drawings at the margins of writing can be interpreted then in their function as a relationship between the arts that results in an interaction a negotiation a slippage or a conflict an erasure. Moreover annotations in the margins of writing especially in their graphic versions constitute a form of autobiographical introspection that is very valuable for reconstructing the profile of their author if writer and artist at the same time.

The Italian version of the Thinking About Life Experiences Questionnaire and its relationship with gender, age, and life events on Facebook

2020

The present study provided a cross-cultural validation of the Thinking About Life Experiences Scale-revised (TALE-R) in an Italian sample of Facebook users (n = 492; female = 378; male = 114; mean age 26.1) to test for replication and universality of the TALE-R three-factor model. Furthermore, it explored the interrelations among gender, age, the scores at the TALE-R and the frequency of posting textual/visual information about individuals' life events on Facebook. Results at exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis gave empirical support to both of a tripartite model for the functions of autobiographical memory (i.e., directive-behavior, social-bonding, and self-continuity) and measure…

Autobiographical Memory, Personality, and Facebook Mementos

2019

The present study analyzed the relationships between directive, self and social functions of autobiographical memory, personality traits, as defined by the Five Factor model, and the Facebook mementos. We defined Facebook mementos as objective measures of the textual (i.e., Facebook Status Updating) and visual (i.e., Photos uploading) information people record on their Facebook profiles. Questionnaires gathered data from a sample of 193 Italian Facebook users (148 female; 45 male; age M = 22.8, SD = 6.8). Results at path analysis using AMOS showed direct significant positive associations between personality traits related to extraversion, openness, neuroticism, conscientiousness and Faceboo…

Ultreya, suseya, Santiago!” Viaggio e spazialità ne La ballata dei pellegrini

2020

The contribution critically and from a geographical perspective discusses the connection between propaganda comics and cartoons in the period of twentieth-century totalitarianisms. The way in which space real and symbolic is implicated through the rhetoric and dialectics of power in social economic and identity dynamics is then explored. In order to study some aspects of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela from the point of view of cultural geography in Spain the chapter takes into consideration a literary text the autobiographical novel "The pilgrims' ballad" by the French writer Edith De La Héronnière first published in 1993 and translated into Italian in 2004. The novel recounts the experience of the Jacobean pilgrimage carried out by the author in the nineties together with three traveling companions starting from a French journey. In particular through the analysis of some parts of the text the ways in which the narration constructs and describes the physical and symbolic space of the pilgrimage are investigated. In this way it is possible to explore the way in which peculiar attributions of meaning inscribe the experience of pilgrimage in a symbolic universe that is both personal and collective at the same time.
