Effects of a progressive aquatic resistance exercise program on the biochemical composition and morphology of cartilage in women with mild knee osteo…
2013
Background Symptoms associated with osteoarthritis of the knee result in decreased function, loss of working capacity and extensive social and medical costs. There is a need to investigate and develop effective interventions to minimise the impact of and even prevent the progression of osteoarthritis. Aquatic exercise has been shown to be effective at reducing the impact of osteoarthritis. The purpose of this article is to describe the rationale, design and intervention of a study investigating the effect of an aquatic resistance exercise intervention on cartilage in postmenopausal women with mild knee osteoarthritis. Methods A minimum of 80 volunteers who meet the inclusion criteria will b…
Targeting multiple myeloma with natural polyphenols
2019
Multiple myeloma (MM) is still an incurable hematologic malignancy. Although new therapeutic strategies have been developed to target different pathways in malignant cells, such as proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis, better survival rates have also been achieved by the introduction of autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT). Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and novel targeted agents, such as proteasome inhibitors, monoclonal antibodies, immunomodulatory drugs, check-point inhibitors and epigenetic modulators, have significantly achieved long remission time and increased survival rates. However, most patients relapse, develop resistance, and eventually die because of re…
Hospital and outpatient models for Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation: A systematic review of comparative studies for health outcomes, experienc…
2021
The number of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantations has risen in the past 20 years. The practice of outpatient Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation programs is increasing in an attempt to improve the quality of patient care and reduce the demand for hospital admission. A systematic review of 29 comparative studies between in-hospital and outpatient treatment of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation, with no restriction by outpatient regime was conducted. This study aims to analyse the current evidence on the effects of the outpatient model on patient-centred outcomes, comparing both in-hospital and outpatient models for autologous and allogeneic HSCT using the Triple Aim framework: …
Molecular evolution of the metazoan extracellular matrix: cloning and expression of structural proteins from the demosponges Suberites domuncula and …
2000
One crucial event during evolution to multicellularity was the development of either direct cell–cell contact or indirect interaction via extracellular matrix (ECM) molecules. The identification of those polypeptides provides conclusive data on the phylogenetic relationship of metazoan phyla and helps us to understand the position of the Metazoa among the other kingdoms. Recently it became evident that the ECM of sponges is amazingly complex; it is composed of fibrous molecules, e.g., collagen, and their corresponding receptors, which are highly similar to those existing in other metazoan phyla. While these data already support the view of monophyly of Metazoa, additional studies are requir…
Alternative and complementary therapies in osteoarthritis and cartilage repair
2020
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint condition and, with a burgeoning ageing population, is due to increase in prevalence. Beyond conventional medical and surgical interventions, there are an increasing number of ‘alternative’ therapies. These alternative therapies may have a limited evidence base and, for this reason, are often only afforded brief reference (or completely excluded) from current OA guidelines. Thus, the aim of this review was to synthesize the current evidence regarding autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI), mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), vitamin D and other alternative therapies. The majority of studies were in knee OA or chond…

Particulated wisdom teeth as an autologous bone substitute for grafting/filling material in bone defects : case Report
2020
Introduction Bone augmentation material using permanent teeth are confirmed in many articles to provide good histological and clinical results. Advances in osteoconduction and osteoinduction, low cost of material, no risk of disease transmission and elimination of foreign body reaction are important aspects not only to the clinician but to patient as well. Many techniques and devices to obtain graft material for bone augmentation out of teeth are found in the literature. Material and Methods The wisdom teeth crush technique developed in our office and described in this case report is simple and no specific devices for teeth grinding were used. The graft material was obtained from impacted i…
Increased expression of the potential proapoptotic molecule DD2 and increased synthesis of leukotriene B4 during allograft rejection in a marine spon…
2000
Sponges (Porifera) are a classical model to study the events during tissue transplantation. Applying the 'insertion technique' autografts from the marine sponge Geodia cydonium fuse within 5 days. In contrast, allografts are rejected and destroyed. Here we show that during allograft rejection the cells in the grafts undergo apoptosis; 5 days after transplantation 46% of the cells show signs of apoptosis. In a previous study it was shown that during this process a tumor necrosis factor-like molecule is induced in allo- and xenografts. Molecules grouped to the superfamily of tumor necrosis factor receptors and a series of associated adapter molecules contain the characteristic death domain. T…
Immediate and flapless implant insertion and provisionalization using autogenous bone grafts in the esthetic zone: 5-year results.
2017
Objectives As the 2-year results for immediately inserted and provisionalized implants have been reported, it remained an open issue, whether the initially high success rates and the esthetic outcome remain stable for longer observation periods. Therefore, this prospective study examines the 5-year hard and soft tissue changes at implants placed in the anterior maxilla. Material and methods Meanwhile, 37 microthreaded implants were placed in 21 patients into extraction sockets with and without facial bone deficiencies by a flapless approach. Facial gaps and bony defects were grafted with autogenous bone chips. The implants were immediately provisionalized. The primary outcome parameters wer…
Alteration of HSC Functions in Thalassemia
2015
Abstract Beta-thalassemia represents one of the most globally widespread monogenic disorders and is characterized by significantly reduced or absent synthesis of hemoglobin beta-chains. In its severe form the insufficient production of adult hemoglobin results in altered erythropoiesis, hemolytic anemia, bone marrow (BM) hematopoietic hyperplasia and splenomegaly often associated with extramedullary hematopoiesis, requiring regular blood transfusions and iron chelation treatment. Over the last two decades many progresses were made in the field of allogeneic bone marrow (BM) transplantation to definitively cure beta-thalassemia. In parallel, experimental autologous transplantation protocols …
