Environmental modelling of aluminium based components manufacturing routes: Additive manufacturing versus machining versus forming
2018
Abstract Additive Manufacturing represents, by now, a viable alternative for metal-based components production. Therefore the designer, often, has to select among three options at process design stage: subtractive, mass conserving, and additive approaches. The selection of a given process, besides affecting the manufacturing step impact, influences significantly the impact related to the material production step. If the process enables a part weight reduction (as the Additive Manufacturing approaches do) even the use phase is affected by the manufacturing approach selection. The present research provides a comprehensive environmental manufacturing approaches comparison for components made o…
Self-management of Information Systems
2016
The paper discusses self-management features that are intended to support the usage and maintenance processes in the information system life. Instead of a universal solutions that are evolved by many researchers in the autonomic computing field, this approach, called smart technologies, anticipates self-management features by including autonomic components into information systems directly. The approach is practically applied in several information systems, and the gained results show that the implementation of self-management features requires relatively modest resources. Thereby the approach is suitable even for smaller projects and companies.
Design and prototyping of a magnetic actuator based permanent magnets for microbead navigation in viscous environment
2017
International audience; For actuating the magnetic microrobots, two types of magnetic actuation technologies have been used during the last past years. These magnetic technologies may be either electromagnetic coils or permanent magnets based systems. This second solution is not the most used by researchers, because of the difficulties to control the magnetic force. In this paper we propose a magnetic actuator prototype based on permanent magnets. In addition to the magnets, the actuator is also composed of a mechanical structure. This structure is used for positioning the permanent magnets, which allows to control the magnetic force generated by the actuator. We demonstrated in simulation …
Optimal Configuration for N-Dimensional Twin Torus Networks
2014
Torus topology is one of the most common topologies used in the current largest supercomputers. Although 3D torus is widely used, recently some supercomputers in the Top500 list have been built using networks with topologies of five or six dimensions. To obtain an nD torus, 2n ports per node are needed. These ports can be offered by a single or several cards per node. In the second case, there are multiple ways of assigning the dimension and direction of the card ports. In a previous work we proposed the 3D Twin (3DT) torus which uses two 4-port cards per node, and obtained the optimal port configuration. This paper extends and generalizes that work in order to obtain the optimal port confi…
Financial, organisational and informative involvement of the society in social innovation processes in Latvia
2018
International audience; Social innovation brings to inclusion and wellbeing, improving the quality of life and socioeconomic performance and enhancing the society's collective power and resources. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to promote social innovation processes in any society, providing research for getting the understanding of different aspects of it, including the main actors and the extent to which they are involved in social innovation. The research presented in this paper reveals the main stakeholders of social innovation and analyses the methodology elaborated by the authors for determining the involvement of the society in social innovation processes at financial, organis…
The waves of enterprises bankruptcy and the factors that determine them: the case of Latvia and Lithuania
2018
International audience; Bankruptcy of enterprises is macroeconomic issue and a phenomenon of a dynamic and competitive market economy. It results in a lot of negative effects not only for the enterprise and its employees but also for other enterprises and institutions, as well as the state and society. The aim of the article is to carry out the analysis of bankruptcy of Latvian and Lithuanian enterprises. No such study has been carried out so far. Article analyses the dynamics of Latvian and Lithuanian enterprise bankruptcy, which manifest themselves in larger waves in certain periods and the factors that influence them. From 1993-when the bankruptcy of enterprises was started to be officia…
The methodology of the statement of comprehensive income and its impact on profitability: the case of Latvia
2018
International audience; The financial statements of a company are used by external users as the main source of information in order to take financially informed decisions. The author of the article has summarized the study on one of the financial statements-a statement of comprehensive income (CI statement) that enables creditors and investors to assess the process of the formation of company's profit and profitability. Purpose: on the basis of the study of the specificity of the preparation of the statement of comprehensive income to analyze and evaluate the influence of CI statement items on the profitability of Latvian companies. In order to achieve the purpose, the author has structured…
Engaging universities in social innovation research for understanding sustainability issues
2017
International audience; The paper presents the analysis of a three-stage research conducted by the authors within a social innovation project in collaboration with international master students of Riga Technical University for determining the factors, which motivate people to be involved in the solution of social problems. The authors not only analyse and use the outcomes of the students’ research but also provide feasibility study of using the potential of study research at the university, for implementing serious research projects. Data collection from Africa, Asia, America and Europe was organised jointly by all the students via web-based survey for creating an original data base for the…
Graphic model for evaluating the competitiveness and eco-efficiency of eco-innovative projects
2019
Eco-innovation describes the creation of novel and competitively priced goods, processes, systems, services, policies, and procedures that satisfy human needs and improve the quality of life while ensuring sustainable development with minimal use of natural resources and minimal release of toxic substances. This article delves into one of the most pressing problems in improving the assessment of eco-innovative projects meant to effect sustainable development. The article also proposes new criteria for evaluating eco-innovation projects. The purpose is to develop and propose a graphic model by which to assess the innovativeness, competitiveness, and eco-efficiency of eco-innovation projects.…
