Design and Simulation of a Vision-Based Automatic Trout Fish-Processing Robot

2021

Today, industrial automation is being applied in a wide range of fields. The initial modeling of robots and mechanical systems together with simulation results in optimal systems. In this study, the designed system is simulated to obtain the required velocities, accelerations and torques of the actuating arms in a vision-based automatic system. Due to the slippery skin of fish and the low friction coefficient, it is not easy to design an optimal tool to handle fish. Since the fish-processing operation is undertaken step by step and provides fish stability, it is essential that the gripper enables different processing operations along the system. The proposed system performs belly-cutting, b…

Quantifying the Potential Economic Benefits of Flexible Industrial Demand in the European Power System

2018

The envisaged decarbonization of the European power system introduces complex techno-economic challenges to its operation and development. Demand flexibility can significantly contribute in addressing these challenges and enable a cost-effective transition to the low-carbon future. Although extensive previous work has analyzed the impacts of residential and commercial demand flexibility, the respective potential of the industrial sector has not yet been thoroughly investigated despite its large size. This paper presents a novel, whole-system modeling framework to comprehensively quantify the potential economic benefits of flexible industrial demand (FID) for the European power system. This …

Assessing the Effect of Drivers’ Gender on Their Intention to Use Fully Automated Vehicles

2021

Although fully automated vehicles (SAE level 5) are expected to acquire a major relevance for transportation dynamics by the next few years, the number of studies addressing their perceived benefits from the perspective of human factors remains substantially limited. This study aimed, firstly, to assess the relationships among drivers’ demographic factors, their assessment of five key features of automated vehicles (i.e., increased connectivity, reduced driving demands, fuel and trip-related efficiency, and safety improvements), and their intention to use them, and secondly, to test the predictive role of the feature’ valuations over usage intention, focusing on gender as a key …

Automatic orientation and 3D modelling from markerless rock art imagery

2013

This paper investigates the use of two detectors and descriptors on image pyramids for automatic image orientation and generation of 3D models. The detectors and descriptors replace manual measurements and are used to detect, extract and match features across multiple imagery. The Scale-Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) and the Speeded Up Robust Features (SURF) will be assessed based on speed, number of features, matched features, and precision in image and object space depending on the adopted hierarchical matching scheme. The influence of applying in addition Area Based Matching (ABM) with normalised cross-correlation (NCC) and least squares matching (LSM) is also investigated. The pipel…

Industrial Scaled Automated Structural Testing with the Evolutionary Testing Tool

2010

Evolutionary testing has been researched and promising results have been presented. However, evolutionary testing has remained predominately a research-based activity not practiced within industry. Although attempts have been made, such as Daimler's Evolutionary Structural Test (EST) prototype, until now, no such tool has been suitable for industrial adoption. The European project EvoTest (IST-33472) team has been working from 2006 till2009 to improve this situation. This paper describes the final version of the Evolutionary Testing Framework (ETF) resulting from the EvoTest project. In specific we will present the EvoTest Structural Testing tool for fully automatic structural testing that …

Multi-Dimensional motivic pattern extraction founded on adaptive redundancy filtering

2005

Abstract We present a computational model for discovering repeated patterns in symbolic representations of monodic music. Patterns are discovered through an incremental adaptive identification along a multi-dimensional parametric space. The difficulties of pattern discovery mainly come from combinatorial redundancies, that our model is able to control efficiently. A specificity relation is defined between pattern descriptions, unifying suffix and inclusion relations and enabling a filtering of redundant descriptions. Combinatorial proliferation caused by successive repetitions of patterns is managed using cyclic patterns. The modelling of these redundancy control mechanisms enables an autom…

Electric vehicles and psychology

2021

The popularity of electric vehicles is evidenced by the broad range of manufacturers presenting new models of plug-in hybrid and battery vehicles. However, the success of the revolution or, rather, the rebirth of electric vehicles, is hanging by a thread, as it lacks the involvement of a large number of users, and many psychological mechanisms hinder it. What are users’ true feelings about this new world of vehicles? Are people ready for the fifth level of automation, i.e., fully automatic driving and the absence of the driving position? The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss the psychological aspects that influence the adoption of electric vehicles. Topics such as the chicken …

Total Quality in a Serial Industry - The Concept of a Closed-Loop in a Total Autonomous Flow

2021

The scientific paper presents a study on the practical perspectives to achieve the ideal “Zero defects” in the automotive industry. The concept of “Zero defects” is a desideratum of all quality managers that can lead to a final goal represented by total customer satisfaction. Quality assurance is necessary in the automotive industry and occurs as a tool by which any organization can achieve a place as competitive as possible in the competitive market. The closed-loop concept emerges as the final solution for achieving the “Zero Defects” ideal. The closed-loop concept encapsulates automation, communication, artificial intelligence, and systematization applied to industrial equipment. The res…

Real-time transmission over Switched Ethernet using a contracts based framework

2009

Switched Ethernet is being used for real time transmissions in industrial automation more and and more. Most modern industrial switches are equipped with mechanisms to deal with time predictability. However, real-time transmission not only requires these mechanisms, but also the proper policies for managing network resources. This paper proposes the use of contracts. A contract is a set of transmission specifications which are negotiated between the applications and the run-time support. They define the application workload and the required performance guarantees. We implement contracts for real-time streaming as an extension of FRESCOR (Framework for Real-time Embedded Systems based on COn…
