Electrochemical energy storage mitigating impact of electric vehicle on the electric grid: Two Italian case studies

In the framework of the Italian R&D project i-Next two pilots plants were realized aiming at demonstrate benefits coming from the adoption of electrochemical energy storages (Lithium ion batteries and hydrogen) integrated with renewable energy sources. In the present study the preliminary results coming from the demo sites operations are reported paying attention to the impacts to the grid.

Analysis of driving cycles effects on power supply requirements of a fuel cell powered light-weight electric vehicle

In this paper, fuel cell powered lightweight vehicles are addressed. A MATLAB/Simulink simulation model including motor, electrical drive, the fuel cell and power electronics systems is implemented. The model is well suited to perform the driving cycle test, which reproduces the speed pattern of an electric vehicle through urban, rural or motorway routes. This paper aims at investigating the most suited driving cycle to design high performances hybrid power supply for electric vehicles in terms of cruising range, cost and size of the power supply equipment. An automatic quality system for injection molding

This paper describes a fully automatic quality system for injection molding. The proposed system includes an on-line measurement platform with a digital camera, a methodology for adaptive design of experiments (DOE), statistical modeling, process monitoring, and a closed loop process control. The system has been tested in the manufacturing of plastic parts for mobile phones.

Developing Passenger Car Equivalents for Freeways by Microsimulation

Abstract In this paper a method of estimation of the passenger car equivalents for heavy vehicles on freeway is described. The variation in traffic quality was evaluated basing on a traffic demand characterized by different percentages of heavy vehicles. This paper analyses the driver’ visual behaviour in the different conditions of ‘isolated vehicle’ and ‘disturbed vehicle’. If the meaning of the former is clear, the latter condition considers the influence on the driving behaviour of various objects that could be encountered along the road. These can be classified in static (signage, stationary vehicles at the roadside, etc.) and dynamic objects (cars, motorcycles, bicycles). Microsimulation-based passenger car equivalents for heavy vehicles driving turbo-roundabouts

Due to its geometric design, turbo-roundabouts impose greatest constraints to the vehicular trajectories; by consequence, one can expect a more unfavourable impact of heavy vehicles on the traffic conditions than on other types of roundabouts. Finite-element performance comparison of IPMSMs with unsymmetrical double-layer windings

This paper presents a comparison of the performances between IPMSMs (Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine) with a symmetrical and with two different types of unsymmetrical windings. The aim is to demonstrate that the adoption of slightly unsymmetrical windings does not significantly affect the performances of the machines, both in terms of cogging torque and torque/load angle characteristics, providing also the advantage of a higher possibility of choice in terms of slot number/poles ratio. Autonomy estimation for EV based on road planning software

A methodology to estimate the energy consumption of an electric vehicle is presented. An approach to create a driving cycle based on data extracted from road planning software is developped; it is used to forecast the total cycle energy consumption. Results are compared to the ones obtained from the corresponding actual driving cycle. The influence of road elevation is taken into. Results match with regard to vehicle velocities, power demand and estimated energy consumption, with a maximum error of 10%. It can thus be concluded that road planning-based energy consumption estimation can be a useful tool by providing accurate information to drivers.
