Impact of chronic psychosocial stress on autonomic cardiovascular regulation in otherwise healthy subjects.

Elevated psychosocial stress might favor the occurrence of cardiovascular disease; however, mechanisms are incompletely understood. We hypothesized that patients (n=126; 44±1 years of age) referred to an internal medicine clinic because of symptoms related to chronic psychosocial stress would demonstrate signs of autonomic dysregulation compared with controls (n=132; 42±1 years of age). Thinking about movement hurts: The effect of motor imagery on pain and swelling in people with chronic arm pain

Objective: Chronic painful disease is associated with pain on movement, which is presumed to be caused by noxious stimulation. We investigated whether motor imagery, in the absence of movement, increases symptoms in patients with chronic arm pain. Methods: Thirty‐seven subjects performed a motor imagery task. Pain and swelling were measured before, after, and 60 minutes after the task. Electromyography findings verified no muscle activity. Patients with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) were compared with those with non‐CRPS pain. Mentalizing eye contact with a face on a video : Gaze direction does not influence autonomic arousal

Recent research has revealed enhanced autonomic and subjective responses to eye contact only when perceiving another live person. However, these enhanced responses to eye contact are abolished if the viewer believes that the other person is not able to look back at the viewer. We purported to investigate whether this "genuine" eye contact effect can be reproduced with pre-recorded videos of stimulus persons. Evidence of unbalanced regulatory mechanism of heart rate and systolic pressure after acute myocardial infarction

The interactions between systolic arterial pressure (SAP) and R-R interval (RR) fluctuations after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) were investigated by measures of synchronization separating the feedback from the feedforward control and capturing both linear and nonlinear contributions. The causal synchronization, evaluating the ability of RR to predict SAP (χs/t) or vice versa (χt/s), and the global synchronization (χ) were estimated at rest and after head-up tilt in 35 post-AMI patients, 20 young and 12 old. Involvement of purinergic nerves in the NANC inhibitory junction potentials in pigeon oesophageal smooth muscle.

Electrical field stimulation (EFS) (0.5 ms in train of 2-32 Hz for 300 ms) in smooth muscle of pigeon oesophagus, in the presence of atropine (1 microm) and guanethidine (1 microm), elicited an inhibitory response consisting of a transient hyperpolarization (inhibitory junction potential, IJP) associated with muscle relaxation. 2. Supernormal conduction in the right bundle branch: lack of influence of autonomic blockade.

A programmed atrial stimulation at a driving rate of 100/min was performed in a 47-year-old woman with left bundle branch block. Supernormal conduction lasting 40 ms was revealed within the right bundle branch. After autonomic blockade (0.2 mg propranolol/kg body weight and 0.04 mg atropine/kg body weight) the position and duration of the supernormal conduction did not change. This suggests that the autonomic nervous system has no influence on the supernormal phase of conduction in the human intraventricular conduction system.

Effects of anxiety during mental arithmetic stress on heart rate variability in healthy subjects

Aim: Anxiety may cause an increased risk of myocardial infarction by reductions in heart rate variability (HRV). However, no data exists on the effect of anxiety on a standard mental test of HRV. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between anxiety elicited by mental stress and HRV.
